Mushy peas

Can somebody please explain the appeal of mushy peas to me?
I was put off them when I had school meals back in the 70's. As far as I recall they are little green lumps of flour. Bleurgh.
I also dislike vinagered beetroot, fried onions, lumpy custard, blancmange and Swede in a salad because of school meals.

@GeneHuntLover stop it! 🤤🤤🤤

GeneHuntLover · 15/10/2019 18:59

avocuddl peas have to be thickly spread though

Did anybody like school dinners in the 70's. I was so glad when they started allowing packed lunches. I had an orange one with a white lid. Couldn't tell you what was in it though. Grin

They are so much nicer if you boil them yourself. You buy them dried and soak them overnight before cooking. I love them!

Crystal87 · 15/10/2019 19:03

I love them, especially with a bit of mint sauce.

MarkinTime · 15/10/2019 19:19

I love them, but only home made one's. Hate tinned and chip shop ones.

justthecat · 15/10/2019 20:11

Omg people, try the frozen ones in Sainsbury’s - 2.30 in microwave 🤩

Yorkshire caviar

Where I come from Mushy Peas are a local institution and sold at fairs alongside Grantham Gingerbread and brandy snaps. They are served with mint sauce and are the food of the gods. 😋

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 15/10/2019 20:21

Peas in general are the work of Satan.

CileyMayRhinovirus · 15/10/2019 20:23

Love mushy peas
And baked beans that are a bit over mushy

Basically I like mush
Yes I admit it, my name is Ciley and I'm a mushaholic

OMG Mansfield market in the 70s. Mushy peas and cockles with mint sauce. Divine. Only one of my three Southern raised kids appreciate them. More for me and him 👌

Gingaaarghpussy · 15/10/2019 20:56

Ok, so marrowfat peas are what makes mushy peas. So my local shop, that sells both tinned, is giving me the beginning and end result?
Would they be good in something, like a pie, or are they only a side dish?
I'm really sorry that I'm over thinking this. I'm just curious.

I woulda been with you OP, until I moved till Yorkshire! Hated them at school, I would have rather had 'normal' peas.

BUT! Up here, they serve them with mint sauce and a pork pie. A....maze...ing!!!!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 15/10/2019 21:05

Norwich market has a mushy pea stall...they are served by the bowl full with mint sauce...they are to die for...I have a bowl everytime i go into the city...

justthecat · 15/10/2019 21:08

Marrofat peas in a tin are grim

SunshineAngel · 15/10/2019 21:21

I didn't like them when I was growing up, but I find the taste beautiful now (perhaps with a little salt and pepper added). I just find them lovely! My partner and I make fish chips and mushy peas every Friday!

Gingaaarghpussy · 15/10/2019 21:24

@myusernamewastakenbyme. I'd love to be able to go to Norwich market, but unfortunately mental health ishoos say nope. Smile
@justthecat. Ok, if I ever decide to do my own mushy peas, I will avoid them like the plague. Grin

One if the few things I bring back to Spain from the UK!

SamBeckett · 15/10/2019 21:30

I am not keen on them.
I am shocked at how many different colours they seem to come in , from pale yellowish green , normal pea green , to something that looks like its radioactive !

DartmoorChef · 15/10/2019 22:08

You can't beat a good mushy pea fritter.

Manchester chip shops in the seventies had the most delicious mushy peas ever. Still like them, with battered fish, but nothing in a tin compares to the chippie's peas, and I'm too ill-organised to soak dried ones the night before.

EskewedBeef · 15/10/2019 22:18

Yes please, with plenty of mint sauce. Just that, eaten with a spoon.
