When you were 5, what would you have wanted more than anything to find under the tree on Christmas morning?

I know it's still October but I'm going to stick my santa hat above the parapet [santa].

DS is 5 and I'm struggling to think of something he'll be really excited by. He desperately wanted a Barbie dream house because his teacher has one they play with in golden time, but we found a completely bargainous one at a car boot last week and he was there so couldn't hide the purchase. He's chuffed, but that's my big idea for Christmas gone. I'd love to think of something else he'll be really thrilled with. He's had a very tough year in lots of ways, and has been an absolute star.

For the record, when I was 5 I wanted (and got) a lovely wooden rocking horse. Can still remember the overwheing excitement and joy of seeing its shape in front of the tree when I peeked round the living room door. Unfortunately DS has already inherited said rocking horse, so I can't use that one either...

What do you remember getting, (or wanting but not getting Sad) when you were that sort of age?

A Wendy house. A playhouse type of thing.

Happyspud · 14/10/2019 21:44

Tiny Tears or one of those somersaulting toy dogs.

DS at that age, Action Man, Pokemon, Gameboy, Disney videos, Beano Annuals.

Not under the tree, but for years as a child, the 1st thing I did on Christmas morning was look out of my bedroom window to see if a pony was tied to the clothes pole. Santa let me down every bloody year.

I'm not sure if it was 5 - but every year I had Mr Frosty on my list. Every year. And I never got one.

I have 2 boys a little older - things they have wanted before - an electric car, WWE wrestling figures and ring, a tablet, bikes, walky talkies, hot wheels, Imaginext Batman/Marvel.......

You could get some barbie furniture to go in the dream house, and cars, scooters etc to go with it.

Fisher Price (I think) garage

MissBPotter · 14/10/2019 21:48

A bike. That’s what I’m planning to get my 5 year old.

HappyGirl86 · 14/10/2019 21:50

I ALWAYS wanted a Mr Frosty and never got one!

My most amazing Christmas presents were a bike one year, and another year I got one of those stand up black boards with a white board on the other side, I used it to play "schools" with all my teddies as the pupils. Loved it!

A Mr Frosty and a toy post office. 39 years later and still never had either

SlightlySleepy · 14/10/2019 21:55

I wanted whatever was the cool 'in' thing to have. Tiny Tears, a Keypers toy, Mr Frosty, Clark's Magic Steps shoes... Kids are very susceptible to advertising. Is there something that everyone as school currently has? You could ask questions like "what's the coolest toy ever?" A 5 year old won't work out what you're doing and why you're asking.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/10/2019 21:56

A real piano. I for a tiny toy one but it just wasn’t the same.

MrsBungle · 14/10/2019 21:57

My 7yo when he was 5yo liked smiggle stuff. He always asked for Playmobil which he got but I think he found it a bit fiddly.
He loved and still loves board games, like snakes and ladders, ludo, sorry (big hit!) and dobble.
At that age I adored dolls and doll houses. Sindy was my love.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 14/10/2019 22:00

A baby sister. Every bloody year I asked Father Christmas for a baby sister. I never got one.

Shannith · 14/10/2019 22:00

Pony.

Still waiting 40 years later.

I never got a Mr. Frosty either!

If it's any consolation, I got my youngest DD an Olaf 'Mr. Frosty' a few years ago. It needed that much winding up just to get a millimetre of ice that I took half my thumbnail off and ended up gripping the side of the fridge so I didn't pass out. There was more ice on the kitchen worktop where I'd smacked the bag of ice cubes needed to put in the bastard thing in the first place.

When I was 5 I wanted, and got, a Treetots Treehouse. I thought it was magical.

EnglishRose1320 · 14/10/2019 22:06

The only thing I wanted was a doll's bath, mum said it was nearly the simplest present I'd asked for but I beat it a few years before when I was asked what I would like when I woke up on Christmas morning and replied 'ready brek'
Clearly breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

When my Ds was that age he absolutely loved getting a toy shop and spent many days serving everyone ice creams from it.
