When you were 5, what would you have wanted more than anything to find under the tree on Christmas morning?

I know it's still October but I'm going to stick my santa hat above the parapet [santa].

DS is 5 and I'm struggling to think of something he'll be really excited by. He desperately wanted a Barbie dream house because his teacher has one they play with in golden time, but we found a completely bargainous one at a car boot last week and he was there so couldn't hide the purchase. He's chuffed, but that's my big idea for Christmas gone. I'd love to think of something else he'll be really thrilled with. He's had a very tough year in lots of ways, and has been an absolute star.

For the record, when I was 5 I wanted (and got) a lovely wooden rocking horse. Can still remember the overwheing excitement and joy of seeing its shape in front of the tree when I peeked round the living room door. Unfortunately DS has already inherited said rocking horse, so I can't use that one either...

What do you remember getting, (or wanting but not getting Sad) when you were that sort of age?

Lego (it was a huge second hand collection, I was in heaven) was my favourite.

When I was a bit older than 5 I wanted a Girls World- I got a microscope instead.

Mr Frosty. I wanted it every Christmas, for years Sad

A present,I never worried about what it would be because Santa was clever.Espwcially when the sledges hidden in the lift fell down the stairs. We all woke up and our parent had agree that Santa had definably been and had had some trouble on our roof.
Getting up at midnight did mean that we fell asleep a few hours later and woke up very late to find our stocking. We were teens by the time we realised that Santa had been parental beer consumption.
DD at that age wanted a space hopper.

Lego
Cuddly toys (especially ones with clothes; thinking of my Teddy Freddy, who was a fox in a jumpsuit)
Books
Felt tip pens and colouring books
Chocolate coins and selection boxes
Something cosy to wear
Bubble bath (or a bath bomb these days)

How exciting!

If I was 5 now, I would totally want this. Actually, I DO want this.

Abba or a Bay City Roller 🤣. A Sindy would have been good too but didn't get one till I was 8.
I think the Lundby doll's house I had when I was 5 or 6 was a winner.

ClemDanFango · 15/10/2019 00:49

A silver tabby kitten, it never happened but I finally made my own dream come true and got one as an adult. He is a fucking pain in my arse whom I love dearly.
I also desperately wanted an electric ride-on car thing, never got that either!

GymNovice · 15/10/2019 06:02

I don't remember. DD wanted a Lego set and DS wanted something for his brio set.

My nasty big sister's dead body

I second taking him to a toy shop, or getting the catalogues to look through. Does the dream house need dolls and accessories? I remember getting a Barbie Ferrari which was very cool.
When I was four I got the Keypers Swan on my birthday (just before Christmas). That stands out as something I was desperate for. I got it from my lovely aunty who died when I was in my teens. She always gave great presents and the nicest birthday cards.

Spied · 15/10/2019 13:49

Wooden kitchen and accessories and a at post office.
I always wanted a big yellow teapot toy that they had at school but I never got one 😐

Pieceofpurplesky · 15/10/2019 13:56

A police car. I got an old tin peddle car for Christmas that my dad has painted up. It was the best thing ever.

When I was a bit older I wanted a doll's house like my friends (Victorian style, elegant etc). Times were hard and he made me one of these too - just four square rooms. But I loved it

spiderlight · 15/10/2019 14:06

Showing my age here, but for Christmas when I was five, I got a Commodore 64 and a 15 inch telly to play it on.

I had a Mr Frosty, but I was never allowed to play with it because of the mess it made.

beachcomber70 · 15/10/2019 15:01

A tricycle or a scooter. I got neither.

OhioOhioOhio · 15/10/2019 15:03

Mr Frosty maker!

missmaxie · 15/10/2019 15:14

The family tree house and a speak and spell. I never got the speak and spell but the tree house was handed down to my sister and cousins. Happy times Grin

HavelockVetinari · 15/10/2019 15:18

I REALLY wanted one of those electric child-size cars (never got one though).

I DID get a Mister Frostie and can confirm that they were shit - too hard to crush the ice. I bet Hulk Hogan's kids enjoyed theirs but for the rest of us it was crap.

Katinski · 15/10/2019 15:26

Actually I remember my 5th christmas very well. I'd wanted a doggy or a kitten from always but my dad said said no. Sad This christmas, tho, my uncle and Patch his dog came to stay with us.So Patch and I went for long walks (well,to the end of our lane and back)many, many times - even when he really wanted to snooze under the dining table - I wonder why he chose under the dining table?ConfusedWink
And I got the dolly with yellow hair with eyes that opened and closed, and she also wore actual knickers you could take off! I'd asked for.
And this was the one and only Christmas I heard Father Christmas speak! It went like this. Because our uncle was staying with us, my mum had put a bed in my sister's and my room for our brother, leaving his room for our uncle. So christmas eve we decided to stay awake waiting for him to come. That night we heard him come upstairs and he said "go to sleep my good children" so we closed our eyes, went to sleep, and when we woke up - he'd beenStar
