When you were 5, what would you have wanted more than anything to find under the tree on Christmas morning?

I know it's still October but I'm going to stick my santa hat above the parapet [santa].

DS is 5 and I'm struggling to think of something he'll be really excited by. He desperately wanted a Barbie dream house because his teacher has one they play with in golden time, but we found a completely bargainous one at a car boot last week and he was there so couldn't hide the purchase. He's chuffed, but that's my big idea for Christmas gone. I'd love to think of something else he'll be really thrilled with. He's had a very tough year in lots of ways, and has been an absolute star.

For the record, when I was 5 I wanted (and got) a lovely wooden rocking horse. Can still remember the overwheing excitement and joy of seeing its shape in front of the tree when I peeked round the living room door. Unfortunately DS has already inherited said rocking horse, so I can't use that one either...

What do you remember getting, (or wanting but not getting Sad) when you were that sort of age?

I wanted a doll called Pippa, she was a smaller version of Barbie. I also wanted her wardrobe of clothes. I didn’t get either Sad

Pippa dolls are now collectors items and sell for a lot of money on eBay.

A puppy. Didn't help that my best friend drove round one Christmas morning with the Westie Santa had just gotten her.
Giant teddy bear, Furby, Robot Dog, Baby G watch, a bunk bed, beany babies... anything but clothes.
My brother and I would circle what we wanted in the Argos catalogue🤣
To be quite honest though... didnt really matter what was under the tree, it was always so intensely exciting regardless!

I always wanted a Mr Frosty and finally got one when I was 18, I wasn't so keen then. I must have been lucky as I got one of the chocolate dispenser toys, that was great.

I always want a post office play set never got one.
I had a great dolls house at about age 5 made by a family member and lots of playmobil so the playmobil family moved into the dolls house!
At 5 mine loved playmobil, lego, marble runs, dolls prams, bikes, Thomas the tank and dressing up.

Another one who wanted a pony and never got one. I do remember (but not sure how old I was) getting a Thomas the Tank Engine train set and loving it. I did also at one point want a Scaletrix because my slightly younger cousin had one. Mum put a stop to that, mostly because she knew that, if she agreed, I'd never get to play with it as my Dad would be permanently "testing" it!

I always wanted that Cadbury chocolate miniature thing too. I bought one for my son when he was 4 so I sort of got it in the end. Grin

Mr Frosty must have been the toy wanted by so many kids but never bought. I really wanted one too. I wonder why parents were not keen to buy it, I don't think it was really expensive, was it?

I always wanted a bean bag but never got that either. 😩

There were 3 things I wanted, I did get the Ghost Castle after much begging but it turned out to have already been opened, played with and broken, we returned it but they didn't have any more in stock so Dad got a refund and I eventually got a new one when I was 38!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 14/10/2019 22:39

The My Little Pony Crimp n' Curl hair salon. It had a working shower and I was desperate for one.

My parents bought me a different My Little Pony salon and I was crushed. Sad

Oh, and I wanted a Mr. Frosty too Grin

DC of mine & others (ages from 2-6) I know fav gifts have been
Robot toy (coding toys)
Movi and codapillar are good ones
Remote control car
Tablet (amazon kids)
Vtech kidizoom watch
Mini karaoke CD player
Play kitchen
Space hopper
Easel with chalks, dry wipe pens, paper, crayons, pencils & magnetic numbers & letters.
Toy story toys
Mario & Luigi racers
Transformers
Musical instrument set

A Quarry.
Either working or retired.
Huge Stig of the Dump fan back then.

Duckyneedsaclean · 14/10/2019 22:42

Give him a smyths catalogue, he'll let you know soon enough!
I always wanted a Mr. Frosty too! Never got one. Funnily enough DS asked for one and I refused, I don't know why!

Floralnomad · 14/10/2019 22:42

CrazyCatLady159 · 14/10/2019 22:42

Chilledout11 · 14/10/2019 22:43

If he likes make believe play could you get a large box and fill it with dressing up items. Iidl have a toy shop they sell near Christmas either.
A big wig wam and nice rug and fairy lights for his room?

Miljah · 14/10/2019 22:50

A dolls house

hagsrus0 · 14/10/2019 23:06

We were given a toy post office - still remember my little sister asking for "a pound of stamps, please".

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/10/2019 23:11

A pony or a dog.

Had to wait until I was grown up for both of these.

A doll's house. Eventually got one that a friend had got tired of. But I never remember feeling disappointed at Christmas, it was always magical and exciting (I knew the puppy and pony were out of the question really, in a two bed terrace house in town...)
