How many of you can get off the floor...

without using your hands/a hand?

Because I can't. You're supposed to be able to.

Ideally I'd like answers not from the super fit gym goers/marathon runners but ordinarily fairly active late 40's? Grin

What exercises would help does anyone know? (I'm not overweight), was very ill in bed for 5 months 4 years ago and just haven't been the same since and it's really depressing me.

Yes, I can. But I am in my 40s and spectacularly unfit, so I don't read anything into it. Sad

CharDeeMacDennis · 08/10/2019 12:33

Just tried and yes, I can, although I am only 40. DP 45 can't do it.

Neither overweight, but also neither of us I'd say is fit. I'm quite sedentary.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/10/2019 12:34

I'm active, been doing yoga 2 years and Pilates 6 months. Do 5 hours of classes a week. My 'core' is strong.

I can't do this because I have an arthritic knee and hip. 🤷‍♀️

No - a fact I only discovered after I sat on the floor to play a game with the kids at Holiday Club. No strength in my left knee. Had to knee shuffle over to a table and haul myself up using that. So embarrassing

RaquelWelch · 08/10/2019 12:37

LOL. I just got on the floor to try. I can do it. I just put my right foot under me and pushed myself up. I am quite fit but I don't go to the gym or do yoga or anything like that

BillieEilish · 08/10/2019 12:38

I so appreciate every single reply, thank you all. It has actually made me feel marginally better as not everyone can do it.

I never used to think about it, I think I just did it? I just don't know. It's when you lose the ability to do something you notice, it's so bloody frustrating!

AutumnRose1 · 08/10/2019 12:40

The crossed feet thing is this

Grannybags that was me round the pool this summer when it was hot and I felt weak. Hmm Hauling myself up by a sunlounger.

A tip I read was - every time you put your shoes on or take them off, get down on the floor to do it. I found it really hard but doing it more often as per this tip really helped.

mumu54 · 08/10/2019 12:48

I can't even get DOWN on to the floor (dodgy legs)!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 08/10/2019 12:48

I can get up from the floor (47, overweight and used to be fit but came off my bike a few hrs ago and damaged my lower back) but it's bending down to pick stuff up off the floor that gets me.

I have a tummy, shorter than average arms and so if I drop a credit card or coins on the floor it's a disaster area!!!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 08/10/2019 12:49

Ffs came off my bike a few yrs ago!!!

BillieEilish · 08/10/2019 12:49

smemorata I'll do that,, thanks.

BillieEilish · 08/10/2019 12:52

MrsArch me too re credit cards/money. I can do it, but I don't like it/have to concentrate Hmm
Grin 'A few hrs ago'!

I’m 43 and can do the cross-legged thing. I never knew this was a thing. Am going to see if DH can do it later on!

HepzibahGreen · 08/10/2019 13:04

Oh God. So now we not only have to be slim, shiny haired, have perfect teeth, a great sex life and a big fat pension pot but we also need to be able to get up off the floor without using our hands?
Why? Isn't that what hands are for?
I can't btw. My knees are fucked. Although looking at "Katy" in that video, if she keeps doing that her knees will be fucked in 20 years too.

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 08/10/2019 13:19

I can't. Mid 50s. If I'm trying to get stuff out of the fridge it's a bugger. I've only noticed it in the last year though, and am now planning to start Pilates or similar. So thank you, OP.

SoupDragon · 08/10/2019 13:23

I can do the "crossed legs sit down" thing but had to abort the standing up part as my spaniel came and sat on me 🙄

shearwater · 08/10/2019 13:26

Yes I can, and I could do with losing two stone. I do yoga though.

But I would normally use my hands, it's easier.

Camomila · 08/10/2019 13:27

I can, in various graceful ways.
But I did gym and dance as a kid/teen and we practised this a lot.

We had a go at home recently and everyone could, but I did it the nicest Grin

Bezalelle · 08/10/2019 13:27

I just got down on the floor and tried this (cat gave me the side-eye) and I can!

LoonyLunaLoo · 08/10/2019 13:40

I can do it cross legged. I’m 33 and do Insanity workouts so I have a good core but I’m not super fit. My job also means I spend a lot of time sitting on people’s floors though so that might help!

crazycatbaby · 08/10/2019 13:50

I've just tried the method in the video, I can do the sit down, when I get back up I have to push myself up using the front of my leg but can do it with no hands on the floor? Overweight, 35 and 21 weeks pregnant here 😂

inwood · 08/10/2019 14:04

Yes but only if I can go my knees for leverage
