How many of you can get off the floor...

without using your hands/a hand?

Because I can't. You're supposed to be able to.

Ideally I'd like answers not from the super fit gym goers/marathon runners but ordinarily fairly active late 40's? Grin

What exercises would help does anyone know? (I'm not overweight), was very ill in bed for 5 months 4 years ago and just haven't been the same since and it's really depressing me.

Yes I can but I exercise 3/4 times a week if I can.

BillieEilish · 08/10/2019 15:41

Yes, dead in 6 years it said on a website (well several) this morning. Shock I am not 'obsessing' just realised how I couldn't do this and wondered who else could/couldn't.

It's not like obsessing about a 'thigh gap' Hmm it is a clear indictor of fitness (apparently)

Anyway, feeling a lot better as a significant number of you can't either, I'm not going to give up Grin We can't all be about to die!

Why does being hypermobile change things? I can put my hands flat on the floor from standing too. I'm quite bendy but my knees have recently started hurting and being stiff so no chance of getting up from crossed legs. Aargh. Now I'm actually worrying about this!

Dead in 6 years??

BillieEilish · 08/10/2019 15:48

Yep, I know, it's what made me post. Not just one article, many!
Plus one horrible man who said it was pathetic if you couldn't do this easy task.

He called people that couldn't morons. 'Don't use it, lose it'

I just put my shoes on sitting on the floor Grin

I shouldn't look at youtube, I blame DD.

HoldMyLobster · 08/10/2019 15:49

I can get up from legs crossed without using hands. I'm 50 and don't do anywhere near enough exercise, and yoga makes me die of boredom.

HepzibahGreen · 08/10/2019 15:50

OP I work on my feet a lot, I walk everywhere, I'm very strong and my blood pressure is super low. I just can't put 11 stone of pressure on my knees from a cross legged position. I'm sure we will survive. I hope!

madeyemoodysmum · 08/10/2019 15:50

Just tried from a cross leg position and I can’t do that at all.

HepzibahGreen · 08/10/2019 15:51

Oh, I'm early 40s should have said

megletthesecond · 08/10/2019 15:51

Yes, easily, I'm 45.
I used to be superfit and currently feel out of shape. Obviously there's hope for me yet.

Egghead68 · 08/10/2019 15:52

51 with health problems and a dodgy hip and knee.

I can only do it with a thin cushion under my bottom. Going to keep practising though!

IamEarthymama · 08/10/2019 15:55

I have had cellulitis in one ankle for neatly 3 years, arthritis since my 30s in all my joints and recently fell down the stairs!

I have been terrified whilst on the allotment and planting out seedlings or sowing seeds in case I got down and was never able to get up again. I had visions of crawling around until I found a chair or planter to climb up 😊

I have been having physio and hope that I will regain some Flexibility by next season or I will be putting a flag on the end of a bamboo pole ready to send out an SOS!

ShakespearesSisters · 08/10/2019 15:59

I tried to after I saw the program on tv about it a couple of years ago. Damaged my knee, ended up having surgery to remove the ripped cartilage.
I can get up off the floor without hands, but easier with one hand on the knee to get up to standing.
Getting up from the crossed legs position like they were suggesting on the program is impossible for me.

shearwater · 08/10/2019 16:00

It was a big thing a few years ago as inability to do the cross legged stand correlated with early death and it’s s reasonably strong correlation.

Oh what absolute, utter balls. People should be strung up for peddling this shite.

shearwater · 08/10/2019 16:04

It was the inability to get up FROM A CHAIR that was the predictor of an early death.

NOT THE FUCKING FLOOR, HANDS FREE.

managedmis · 08/10/2019 16:07

Reminds me a bit of a line I saw yeeeeaaarrs ago on here : 'I'd only kick him out of bed to fuck him on the floor'

Dunno why

As you were

HepzibahGreen · 08/10/2019 16:09

Praise the Lord I CAN get up from a chair! !

Skinnychip · 08/10/2019 16:22

I can quite easily but not sure its anything to do with my core....whenever i have been to any abs or core classes (very very infrequently - the last was about 5 years ago!!) I am normally the dunce of the class and struggle to do a sit up!

BillieEilish · 08/10/2019 16:23

Praise the Lord, so can I! (Just Grin)

OP posts:
MustardScreams · 08/10/2019 16:25

I just tried it and can get down on the floor handsfree with legs crossed, but have to sort of splay my legs out either side to get back up again. Like Bambi on ice.

Can definitely get up from a chair so think I’ve got a few more years in me yet.

BillieEilish · 08/10/2019 16:25

I can't tell you how much better I feel now. Thanks mnetters and very well done to those that can.

OP posts:
DontMakeMeShushYou · 08/10/2019 16:32

Yes, I can do the cross-legged thing, both sitting down and getting up. I'm 50. I guess I'm fairly flexible which I'm pretty sure is just down to luck (because it sure ain't a result of exercise or yoga or anything like that).

feelingverylazytoday · 08/10/2019 17:07

I can from kneeling position very easily. I'm not attempting the cross legged thing due to an old knee injury. I'm not risking another one.

Stravapalava · 08/10/2019 17:20

I can but I'm fairly fit and do yoga 3 times a week. I'm not far off 40!

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 08/10/2019 17:24

To do it from crosslegged you have to rock. Lean back then propel yourself forward and you're up. Takes core strength though.
