Do you still have your national insurance card?

And if not, when did you lose it?
Just had to put my NI number on something today which made me think of it. I’m rapidly approaching 40 and I think I lost mine about 15 years ago.

I've still got the one I had when I changed my name. It's 29 years old and kept with my driving license and immunisation card I had when I was a baby (51 years ago).

Chitarra · 24/08/2019 20:30

Yes! I keep it with my passport and other important documents.

snozzlemaid · 24/08/2019 20:30

Yes, still got mine. I'm 47!

SoMuchToBits · 24/08/2019 20:34

I've still got mine (cardboard one). I'm 57. The name on it is my maiden name, but no problem as I changed my name on my online records.

Ds (18) doesn't have a card, just a letter with his NI number on.

Iwannasnack · 24/08/2019 20:34

Forgot that existed! I also know the number off by heart. Don’t remember having the card since I had my first Saturday job around 1998

TheBiscuitStrikesBack · 24/08/2019 20:35

Yep!

Pipandmum · 24/08/2019 20:36

Yes I have mine and I’m 57.

Pipandmum · 24/08/2019 20:38

And should add I’ve moved over ten times and to another country and back in that time. I still have my US social security card (which is paper) from when I was 18.

Freshprincess · 24/08/2019 20:39

Yes, I've got a plastic card. Not sure where it is, but definitely in the house somewhere.
Never even thought I'd have to change my name for it.
DS actually got his today, it's just a piece of paper. I'm going to have to scan it to keep it safe.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/08/2019 20:40

I'm 45. Mine is in my burgundy records of achievement folder on my shelves at work in my classroom. :)

Isleepinahedgefund · 24/08/2019 20:41

Still have mine - am 40! I know mine by heart though.

They don't give out cards anymore just a letter.

The Child Reference number you have for child benefit claim turns into their NI number when they turn 16.

PajamasnoDramas · 24/08/2019 20:41

Still got mine after 30 years

WhatTiggersDoBest · 24/08/2019 20:42

No, about 8 years ago, a place I applied for a job kept it and my original birth cert, and when I realized they'd kept them I asked for them back, and they said they'd destroyed them for "confidentiality" reasons. Hmm

Raffles1981 · 24/08/2019 20:43

I do still have it. Intact. And I know the number off by heart. Goodness knows why it has stuck with me. I think the day I forget it, is the day I worry about my memory loss

livinglavidavillanelle · 24/08/2019 20:44

Oh I loved that NI card. It was my proof I was old enough to buy cigarettes, and had a lot of use! Haven't seen it in donkeys years mind you, but then I know my NI number and it's on all my payslips.

bloodywhitecat · 24/08/2019 20:45

I have mine, I am 56.

reluctantbrit · 24/08/2019 20:53

It’s in a box with our passports and driving license and other small documents like vaccination book.

I changed it when I got married, I think we had a NI office for this, but it was 17 years ago.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2019 20:56

Yes. It's in an old Ferrero Rocher 16 piece box in the book case along with all the bank cards from my money laundering side hussle*. So is DPs. Oddly DP knows his number anyway and I know mine after a good think.

It is odd that DP knows his because I am the money manager in this house and he is one of those blissfully ignorant types who goes though life without a thought about what money we have, so has no clue about bank accounts or bills being paid but somehow has always known his NI number.

  • I'm not really money laundering obviously but I have about 6 current accounts, 8 savings accounts and 5 credit cards to shift money around to maximise interest and introductory deals. It's not as good as it used to be obviously but it nets me a few hundred quid a year for a bit of messing about in the internets.

No. I had dd1 when I was 18. That summer we went for a day trip to Dreamland in Margate. Dd was only a few months old. I left my Mum with dd and popped to the toilet. When I came out she had wandered off so I followed. Unfortunately my bag containing all the baby bits as well as my purse - with my National Insurance card in - had been on the table by my Mum but she didn't realise. I dashed back but it had gone! Gutted. My bag had my camera in with all my newborn photos of dd in. I was so upset but it wasn't handed in so had to give up. Dd is now 27 and I still feel sad about it.

womaninthedark · 24/08/2019 20:59

Card? No. I have the slip of paper I received with my NI number when I was sixteen in 1974.

MondeoFan · 24/08/2019 21:00

No as my purse was stolen with it in. I know it off by heart so it doesn't matter. Haven't had it for 20 years

onemouseplace · 24/08/2019 21:02

I’m saw mine fairly recently when I was going through a folder with random documents in. I never got a new one when I change my name
when I got married though. It never occurred to me to be honest, and I’m usually quite on the ball
about these sort of things.

Freshprincess · 24/08/2019 21:03

@DrMadelineMaxwell I also have one of those National Record of Acheivement folders Grin can't remember what I use to put in it.

stucknoue · 24/08/2019 21:04

They don't make them anymore, I still have mine though

Fairypiggy · 24/08/2019 21:07

I lost mine a few years ago. When I received it my details were printed upside down! When I contacted them about it they said I didn’t need a new one as you could still read the number.
