It was awful yet delicious. Ok maybe not delicious, but it was a bowl full of one of my rare fluffy childhood memories.

Any other suggestions for a nostalgic lunch or dinner?

Oh god, a few drinks have been taken, so please excuse this post.
My dad died, a month after my brother. My sister dies a year later, leaving justbme and my mum.
We returned to this country with nothing, so mum worked full time, i went to school, walked home alone, let myself in and looked after myself until she got in- 4pm - 6pm approx.
I was 6.
When i was 8 we moved house. Iwas alone just as much, pretty much full time during school holidays and our meals comprised of beans on toast, egg on toast, jacket potato, tinned soup etc.,
At the weekend, if she was not out, she would buy 2 vesta chow meins and we would have a 'lady's night'.
I felt so grown up and loved 😁 if we had arctic roll afterwards, i was in Heaven.

Thanks for the memories!

Tinned peaches with Carnation milk. And yes to Angel Delight and Dream Topping but it has to be butterscotch flavour.

When I was a very broke student - back in the very olden days - a Vesta Paella was a major treat.

If I ever saw them on sale I'd treat myself again.

Vesta chow mien - amazing. The crispy noodles were miraculous

Follow it up with vienetta! The ultimate treat and height of poshness

When i was a knackered junior doctor, my mum came to stay and bought me Vesta risotto cos it was quick and easy Grin I loved it!
@Loyaultemelie if you send me Veda, I'll send you Vesta 😆

CallarMorvern · 15/08/2019 19:34

Was that the Vesta with the crispy noodles on top?
We had Bird's trifle in a fit of nostalgia a few months back, I'd really oversold it to DD and I don't recommend you go there, it was rank!

RedElephants · 15/08/2019 19:38

Vesta paella... I lived on that and Chow Mein as a teenager..
I still buy them as an when I see them 😊

Fray Bentos is a staple. My DS loves them. They aren’t actually too bad in terms of fat/ calories and have much less crap than other processed food.

Find us pancakes aren’t great anymore. Very dry and tiny wheeny.

I must visit Morrisons tomorrow then, and pick up some Vesta Chow Mein! Used to love watching the noodles crisp up in the saucepan. I've got some individual bottles of Snowball and a jar (well, half a jar!) of maraschino cherries in the cupboard - that would be Saturday night sorted!

TuffersTickler · 15/08/2019 20:41

Would def do the (original) Findus crispy pancakes if they were still around!

Don't have a Fray Bentos pie! I tried one and it was absolutely rancid, even the dog didn't want to finish it off!

@Loyaultemelie I'm in NI too. Some branches of Asda stock Chow Mein over here.

Poundstretcher stock Chow Mein, Beef Curry and Paella.

@Toooldtobearsed2 that made me well up a little. I'm glad there were some warm memories for you there too.

I used to love findus crispy pancakes. Had them a year or so a go...utterly disgusting.

Flavabobble · 15/08/2019 21:01

Sunday tea in our house:
All the windows would be steamed up from the boiled potatoes, Black Beauty & the Golden Shot on telly (no remote and no BBC2).
My mum would fool me into thinking a chicken wing was the same as a chicken leg and Kunzel cakes for afters. My sister and I would fight over the one with a chocolate button in the middle.

RosaWaiting · 15/08/2019 21:03

Not heard of them

If I like Batchelors Super Noodles, will I like this?

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/08/2019 21:06

I currently have crispy pancakes in my freezer, also potato waffles and Turkey unicorns.
We love a shit freezer tea hereGrin

Nat6999 · 15/08/2019 22:44

I used to love the Vesta beef curry, it had sultanas in it, I used to add a chopped fresh tomato & some chopped onion, it was my friday night treat after school, being trusted to cook my own tea.
