Measured out a bowl of arborio rice, and glanced back in and SAW THESE crawling up and through.

Wtf?! Is my entire food cupboard contaminated?! I’m suddenly itchy.

Oooh! You’ve got a family of weevils I think

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 17:45

Gah! Do you think they’re everywhere? Or just in that packet of rice? ShockConfusedSad

Probably just in the rice.

Singlenotsingle · 13/08/2019 17:47

The rice has been in your cupboard too long. You have to watch out for flour as well. These little bugs like flour.

minisoksmakehardwork · 13/08/2019 17:49

Weevils! Check the flour too. Even unopened if it's been in the cupboard a long time you will find these in there.

managedmis · 13/08/2019 17:51

Another reason to low carb

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 13/08/2019 17:51

Not to make light of it, but they might sing you their version of the 'Boll Weevil' song as originally performed by Brook Benton!

Yesitsdyed · 13/08/2019 17:52

Yep, weevils. We used to get them a lot overseas.

Where did you buy your rice?

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 13/08/2019 17:53

Weevil weevil rock you.

(As sung by German Queen tribute band.)

Mereke · 13/08/2019 17:54

As others have said weevils, toss out flour if it has them in but just wash the rice and crack on.

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 17:54

I want to throw the whole cupboard out!!

I took the bug-infested risotto straight out to the outside bin, leaving kids inside. But people were shooting up out there by the bin - and kind of aggressive (live in very central London and want to move). So all in all, not a good half an hour for me! Grin

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 17:55

Mereke I chucked it - I’m squeamish but don’t want to be! Grin

So they won’t make you sick?

Meh. I'd just wash the rice (thoroughly) drain & then use it. They aren't poisonous. Flour, I'd probably bin if I noticed weevils in it. I freeze all my flour before storing it now, it considerably extends the storage life.

ShippingNews · 13/08/2019 17:59

The hot weather encourages weevils. Keep your flour and rice in the fridge in future.

PamelaTodd · 13/08/2019 18:00

Extra protein Wink

You can rescue flour by putting it in a ziplock bag, freezing it and sieving it but personally I’d just burn down the kitchen.

SandAndSea · 13/08/2019 18:01

I've read that if you put new flour etc in the freezer for 48 hours, straight after you've bought it, it stops this happening.

PamelaTodd · 13/08/2019 18:01

Seriously though, rice, flour etc should be kept in airtight jars.

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 18:01

PamelaTodd - tempting! I want to move anyway! Grin

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 18:02

I use those plastic ikea clips and never put either in jars... Until now! I am going to be very strict about that from now on!

galaxybrain · 13/08/2019 18:04

I've had those reeeallly teeny ones in an unopened box of flour before.

RainOrSun · 13/08/2019 18:06

From experience, check all carby stuff - pasta, rice, flour, cereal, couscous.......

Drogonssmile · 13/08/2019 18:06

Weevils! I love that word! sorry not helpful
