Measured out a bowl of arborio rice, and glanced back in and SAW THESE crawling up and through.

Wtf?! Is my entire food cupboard contaminated?! I’m suddenly itchy.

Yep - told DH I was binning everything and he freaked out more then than when I showed him the weevil picture! (He hater waste!)

Going to bleach, hairdryer, and bay leaf the cupboards tomorrow! Can’t face it tonight! (Have binned and wiped down)

@Greengreen88 a bay tree in the garden and folk shooting up at the bins your garden is a very mixed place!

Haha I live in shoreditch, GreatestShowUnicorn! Super urban, but a lovely place with a lovely little garden. But I’m finally done now, after nearly 20 years in this part of London!

Also am awake now as I dreamt of the weevils Confused

Somebody should tell the people who are stocking up to watch for weevils

FrenchFancie · 14/08/2019 05:17

As others have said, they are weevils. They love anything startchy. We live in a hot country and constantly battle the buggers, to the point that all my pasta, rice and flour live separated in plastic Tupperware boxes to contain them - you bring one contaminated product in an they are in everything within what feels like the space of days.
Throw away everything that’s been contaminated and wash your shelves down before restocking. Look for little round holes in packaging, the buggers can even eat through plastic bags (although thankfully not Tupperware yet!!)

So horrified by the shooting up by the bins!

And I say that as a London dweller (we are west).

You poor thing. I hope you move somewhere nicer soon.

Starlight2004 · 14/08/2019 08:03

We once got them in a bag of flour from Sainsbury's... by the time I noticed our whole cupboard was overrun with the little feckers, I chucked everything... cleaned bleached... but still
Found them crawling out of the woodwork for days possibly weeks... in the end DH had to seal around all the edges of the insides of the cupboards. They are little bastards! I'm told they are very common in hotter climates and people just rinse them out of rice etc... but I wasn't taking any chances!

Greengreen88 · 14/08/2019 08:43

Legomadx2 I know, the spot is “known” (end of row, quiet). And the folks who hang out there are relatively benign. But 5:30pm is the pretty early! And the first time I’ve blatantly seen with my own eyes! (Usually see people shuffling about, some debris but nothing sinister, or neighbours tell me about it.)

DH was also surprised. Like I said, I’ve lived here a long time but things are getting a bit... sadder out there? More homelessness, etc.

Ahh well, back to the weevil cleaning!

Gah Starlight2004! I was hoping that since the food they were in was from a bottom cupboard, my top cupboard stuff (flour) would be safe! But they looked pretty fast and feisty when I saw them in the rice! I am going to check they haven’t travelled north!

If you dont think the flour is infected, and want to save it, it is worth bagging it up, and putting in the freezer for 48 hours. All flour into our house goes into the freezer until the bag is opened - we live in one of those tropical hotspots where delightful creepy crawlies are commonplace.....

timeforawine · 14/08/2019 09:28

runs off to check rice and flour
