Measured out a bowl of arborio rice, and glanced back in and SAW THESE crawling up and through.

Wtf?! Is my entire food cupboard contaminated?! I’m suddenly itchy.

My late df was a purser on troop shipss. They used to send someone down in to the hold to brush the weevils off the outside of the sacks of rice......

CassandraCross · 13/08/2019 18:12

No, they won't make you sick but the thought of eating them might!

They will be in rice, flour, ground almonds anything wheat or cereal based and once you find them in one product such as rice they will be in everything else they favour within that cupboard. If they appear in an unopened bag or sealed container it is because they were already in the product when you bought it and were just waiting to hatch.

I always keep flour in the fridge a lesson learnt whilst living in a hot country plagued by the little buggers, and never have an issue.

Ohnononono · 13/08/2019 18:16

They are bloody annoying but can’t hurt you.
Whenever I hear weevils of always think of the pun in the ‘Master and Commander’ film that you should always choose the Lesser of Two Weevils....

That would have made me feel sick but the fact they are called weevils makes it less disgusting and actually quite cute Grin

GoodwithRocksandGems · 13/08/2019 18:18

I had this a few years back. They were in my cardboard boxed spices too - even the chilli powder 😳. I had to clear out everything.

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 18:18

Haha to that pun!

Okay - good to know they’re in everything. That cupboard doesn’t have flour in it, but it has a lot of different rices and lentils.

The risotto rice was opened, but I hadn’t had it that long! And ate some a couple of weeks ago unknowingly 🤢🤢

Weevil weevil rock you.

SofiaAmes · 13/08/2019 18:28

You have to clear out everything, spray it all down and then store your flour, rice, beans etc. in airtight containers. I use big tall glass containers from Ikea.

littlestrawby · 13/08/2019 18:28

Ahh, I had about a month of eating these with my daily posh-full-of-yummy-bits muesli. Just thought it was part of the bits! It was only when I saw one of them waving their legs around that I realised...Grin

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 18:32

SofiaAmes good to know. The whole lot is getting cleared out just as soon as I stop feeling itchy!

This is why people from south asia wash and drain rice 7 times. Just do the same- they’ll all come out and then you can cook.

Think of it as extra protein

tolerable · 13/08/2019 18:41

bin entire cupboard contents

81Byerley · 13/08/2019 18:44

Apparently they don't like bay leaves, so if you put a few on the shelves it will deter them.

Greengreen88 · 13/08/2019 19:11

81Byerley good tip! I have a bay tree in the garden!

backwithabang · 13/08/2019 19:35

Livpool · 13/08/2019 20:00

Ugh weevils 🤢

whensa · 13/08/2019 21:43

apparently the sign language/makaton sign for biscuit, sort of tapping your elbow, is from when sailors would knock/crack biscuits on their elbow to knock out any weevils...

Can i just say that I love the word weevil. It's one of my favourite words.

Foslady · 13/08/2019 21:56

To get rid of them once you have wiped down dry your cupboards out with a hair dryer - it’ll desiccate them all all kill them off for good (used to work for a major flour producer and this was their advice)

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 13/08/2019 22:09

Don't worry, no one ever died from eating a weevil. Grin

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 13/08/2019 22:22

We've had them and I binned everything. Bleached the shelves, freaked out again about the loss of money, then put bay leaves in it

boatyardblues · 13/08/2019 22:31

We had them a few years ago. They had tunnelled through lasagne sheets too, which was kinda fascinating to look at.

Main points:

  • Purge the cupboard - everything not in an airtight container is potentially infected.
  • Clean out cupboards as recommended by PP
  • All carby food to be stored in airtight containers in future.
  • Be careful about where you buy your stuff from in future
  • Quarantine new stuff in the freezer for 48 hours to kill any bugs
  • Bay leaves in cupboards

We haven’t had any problems since. 🤞
