What (or who) the fuck is making this noise?! Home alone!

I'm in the front room.

Something is making a noise in the room with me. I've heard it 4 times. I'm alone in the house. I have no idea what could be making it!

It sounds a bit like a release of air, could be a squeak (rodent?!!), it also sounds a bit like it could be something electrical, an electrical buzz, kinda - but there's absolutely nothing plugged in over that side of the room!

WTF is it?

I ignored it the first time.

The third time I reached for Mumsnet, and then it did it again...

Battery opersted air freshener that puffs fragrance into the air intermittently?

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:06

Or it could maybe be water escaping from something under pressure.

I'm on the sofa. The noise sounded like it came from the other side of the room. There's a cupboard (books and toys and crap in it), and a pile of stuff that's waiting to be dealt with (bags and things).

On the right, is the TV (actually a computer monitor, and it's off) and a chimney behind it. I can think of weird noises that might come from them, but it sounded like it came from the cupboard area of the room.

Kids toys that do nothing for hours or days on end then scare the shot out of you ... bastard toys they're officially called!

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:07

OMG it happened again, this time like a quiet dripping and a then a very audible squidging noise!

I'm going to have to get off the sofa and go look aren't I?!!

I think maybe there's a leak or something?

Fridge noises? I kno you said nothing electrical but sometimes you can also hear them from another room? Also are you sure of the direction of where the sound is coming from? I sometimes get disoriented of where the sound is if that makes sense?

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:07

No, it's not a toy noise. Those bastards have got me loads of times! THis doesn't sound like that.

Yes, that kind of noise (until it did the weird squidge) but I don't own such a thing!

Posting to keep you company!

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:09

Not 100% sure on direction, but it's definitely in this room.

OP posts:
wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:09

Or possibly in the wall.

But it sounds to quiet yet clear to be coming from elsewhere. It's not muffled IYSWIM.

Could it be wind and your chimney?

InfiniteCurve · 09/08/2019 23:10

In our house that'd be the cat snoring.
Do you have a cat??Grin

64sNewName · 09/08/2019 23:10

Is it regularly spaced like an automated thing, or random?

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:10

64sNewName thank you! Grin

And, I have no gin in the house! This is remiss!

Ooooh I’m intrigued. I get so many weird noises in my house. We have reptiles and a visiting relative once dropped a box of live crickets which I can never find but definitely hear at night. Also there’s definitely something living in the attic, probably birds (I hope)

Speakercube · 09/08/2019 23:10

I agree wiv other poster- one of those bastard noisy share the shit out of you toys! Yep-think you'll have to put Yr big pants on and head for that cupboard OP!

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:11

No pets.

It seems randomly timed.

Not wind.

It is very windy outside though. And I think maybe raining but not sure.

It’s the sound of spider eggs hatching.

Yes, now I'm alert, I can hear the weird noises the house makes! It's a semi, and when the neighbours walk about it upstairs next door, the sound travels and it sounds like someone's walking about here. I heard the thud that sounds like someone walking about upstairs since hearing this noise and that freaked me!

(Don't worry about that for me, there is definitely no one upstairs, we hear that noise all the time. Just bad timing and made me jumpy!)

Thejoxter ooh that made me shiver!!! Op- have you looked up the chimney? - are u in the UK? it's a stormy night after all...

Babymamamama · 09/08/2019 23:14

When I stayed in a holiday let last summer I had to go around unplugging all those hideous air freshener things that go PFFFFT at random moments. Drove me crazy till I found them all. Wishing that was the solution to your question but as it’s your own house it seems unlikely.

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:14

Haha, nice try. We have loads of spiders here. I'm quite happy for them to hang about and eat flies!

Where's the radiator, is the valve leaking?

Speakercube · 09/08/2019 23:16

Oh sorry x post about the wind! This would drive me nuts! Keep walking round the room till its at its loudest?
