What (or who) the fuck is making this noise?! Home alone!

I'm in the front room.

Something is making a noise in the room with me. I've heard it 4 times. I'm alone in the house. I have no idea what could be making it!

It sounds a bit like a release of air, could be a squeak (rodent?!!), it also sounds a bit like it could be something electrical, an electrical buzz, kinda - but there's absolutely nothing plugged in over that side of the room!

WTF is it?

I ignored it the first time.

The third time I reached for Mumsnet, and then it did it again...

There's a possibility it could be the chimney I suppose. It's not used. I'm not even sure it still goes all the way up. But it's not properly sealed at the bottom, if you looked behind the bookshelf the TV's on you'd find a hole to the flue.

I suppose rain might be getting in, but it made a very weird noise if it was rain! What was the squidgy noise?!

Also that's not happened before, so why now? Oh. I can think of a reason actually, the neighbour's chimney is in bad condition, possible the condition has got worse I suppose. And maybe rain is getting in now. Hmm... Didn't sound like rain.

Where's the radiator, is the valve leaking?

Yes, that's exactly the kind of noise! Like something high pressured squeezing out.

But - the radiator is on the other wall, definitely not where it was coming from.

Ooh yeah - good post about the rad! I was just thinking boiler.... I once had one of those ultra sensitive self opening bins that kept opening at random times--that gadget didn't last long before it got booted out I can tell ya😂 I digress....

One time I was making tea in the kitchen in the night, waiting for it to brew and I could hear the weirdest noise that sounded like it was coming from the wall. After many minutes of moving round the room and pressing my ear against things I discovered it was caused by the mug being put down on a damp surface, then when the boiling water was poured in it heated up the water on the kitchen surface and it was bubbling away underneath the cup. Such a strange fizzing, scratching noise. I guess I don’t hear it when I make tea during the day because it’s drowned out by daytime noise. I hope your noise is something equally harmless!

Speakercube · 09/08/2019 23:22

From under the floorboards? I hope you haven't got a leak OP....

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:22

I'm going to go investigate!

I'll be back (I hope! Shock )

Probably rats or mice. Hopefully under the floorboards

thaegumathteth · 09/08/2019 23:24

Kids haven’t left a water bottle lying somewhere ?

Moonflower12 · 09/08/2019 23:25

We had a gist parrot that cracked peanuts in the kitchen. Turned out it was the fridge making weird noises! Blush

Allli · 09/08/2019 23:26

My moneys on kids battery toy doing something. Or chimney.
Either way not a ghost. Although there is another thread active on that if you like being freaked out....Confused

Speakercube · 09/08/2019 23:26

I once had a leak under floorboards there was a type of tap/ stopcock--was an old house though but was a weird place for it to be. Grin

Moonflower12 · 09/08/2019 23:26

Gist? Ghost.

64sNewName · 09/08/2019 23:26

Have you gone nearer? Could it be something hidden within the pile of stuff needing sorted out?

Maybe there’s been a decomposing piece of snack fruit in a schoolbag since July and it’s fermenting and gently releasing gases.

PivotPivotPivottt · 09/08/2019 23:27

I remember reading on here someone had a sort of bleeping high pitched noise for ages and it turned out to be some sort of bug living in the wall? I can't remember exactly but it was something like that.

Speakercube · 09/08/2019 23:28

Balloon gradually deflating?! ☺
Hope OPs OK!

ThatLibraryMiss · 09/08/2019 23:29

I reckon it could be a bird that's fallen down the chimney. Can you get it open enough to look? Have a cloth ready to catch a sooty bird.

wigglybluelines · 09/08/2019 23:33

I'm OK! Nothing to report yet. Still alive!

BadgerBadgerMushroom · 09/08/2019 23:34

Come back OP! Hopes mysterious noise hasn't eaten her

CherrySocks · 09/08/2019 23:35

Bird in the chimney?
Cricket chirping?
Neighbour's radiator - how sound proofed are the walls?

fairydustandpixies · 09/08/2019 23:39

Have you got a bottle of carbonated drink around? I've been freaked several times after opening one, pouring a drink out then the gas leaks out of the bottle every now and again making a strange noise.

64sNewName · 09/08/2019 23:40

What have you ruled out in your explorations so far?

SingingMyOwnSpecialSong · 09/08/2019 23:42

My chimney was re-lined with a steel flue last year and now occasionally makes wind chime type noises. It also sometimes amplifies noises from outside, like the (unpleasant) neighbours conversation and their lovely but whiny dog. This morning we had heavy wind and rain and there was an odd noise, a bit like a high pitched hoover, that went on for ages. When I looked outside the phone lines were sort of vibrating and I think it was coming from that. Internet was fussy all morning too.

CherrySocks · 09/08/2019 23:43

Is something running out of charge and doing those desperate bleeps to notify you it needs charging?

youngestisapsycho · 09/08/2019 23:52

Hop OP is ok?!😱
