What (or who) the fuck is making this noise?! Home alone!

I'm in the front room.

Something is making a noise in the room with me. I've heard it 4 times. I'm alone in the house. I have no idea what could be making it!

It sounds a bit like a release of air, could be a squeak (rodent?!!), it also sounds a bit like it could be something electrical, an electrical buzz, kinda - but there's absolutely nothing plugged in over that side of the room!

WTF is it?

I ignored it the first time.

The third time I reached for Mumsnet, and then it did it again...

No news, other than I am still alive. No more noises. Sorry to disappoint!

This is what I found:

There was something plugged in, I forgot the hoover was still plugged in and didn't see the cable. I've unplugged that and put it away!

I found an aerosol in one of the bags (dry shampoo) and moved that to near me, so if it was that I'll hear it. I don't think so, though as the lid's on tight and this sound was of air/water escaping I think.

The wall is between the front room and kitchen and the fridge is on the other side, so I suppose it could have been a fridge noise, possibly. But it sounded like it was clearly in this room. My fridge does make noises, but not like that. It makes loud clicking noises, and you can't hear them from the front room. I looked at the fridge anyway.

I also leaned over the shelves where the hole to the chimney is and listened carefully. Nothing!

I also got myself a little snack!

Gin would have been infinitely preferable but there's no booze in the house at all! Major fail.

The wind is wild outside and it's raining. If I was to bet, I'd say something to do with the chimney. Perhaps a little bit of rain got down or something. Or maybe it's blocked up there and the wind whistled through a tiny gap or something.

It didn't sound like it came from the chimney at all, but I can't see anything in the cupboard that would make that kind of noise!

SingingMyOwnSpecialSong that's really interesting!

When I stayed in a holiday let last summer I had to go around unplugging all those hideous air freshener things that go PFFFFT at random moments.

That'd be me too! They're intensely irritating IMO!

@fairydustandpixies that happens to me in my youth! In my first ever flat, my roommate came running into the living room screaming "there's a mouse in my room!!!" After I followed the squeaky sound for 15 minutes all over the flat turned out she hadn't put the lid on her Fanta tight enough. 😂

LilQueenie · 10/08/2019 00:00

sometimes a cup can have little bits of liquid under it making strange noises. I once had a cup with a loose handle. I wondered why there was a weird scrunching bubbling sound till I realised about a week later.

showmethegin · 10/08/2019 00:01

*happened

Probably rats or mice. Hopefully under the floorboards

OMG I hope not!

I lived in a flat (that I owned) that got rats in the ceiling, between my flat and the one above. They kept eating through my wiring. It cost me about £2,000 and took over a year to finally get rid of them.

The rat catchers were useless. They'd just lay down poison, the rats would die in the ceiling and stink out the flat above. Thankful that rank smell didn't permeate to my flat, but I did have the pleasure of taking the spotlights out of the ceiling and my kitchen being covered in a shower of rat poo.

In the end, my plumber solved it in 10 minutes, for free. (He was there anyway). The problem was that when the extension had been put in, about 30 years previously, one of the pipes to the main drain had become redundant, and hadn't been filled, creating a rat run from the sewers to in between our flats. But it hadn't had much interest to rats, they couldn't get into our flats that way.

Until, I put in spotlights. They created warmth above, and the rats nested on top of them.

My brilliant plumber sealed the hole with cement (inside a plastic bag so it didn't attach to the sides, in case anyone wanted to get it out in future). Problem solved.

Moral? Rat catchers are a racket! Call a competent plumber and work out where they're getting in! And, maybe avoid spotlights!

Have you got a bottle of carbonated drink around?

Ooh, now we could be getting somewhere! One of the bags has a bottle of fizzy water in it!

I've moved it next to me. I haven't touched the top as I want to hear it if it does it again!

When my smoke detector battery starts to go flat it makes that kind of noise, a kind of pathetic plumfp sound that you can just about hear. Or some other thing losing its charge as said before.

Babymamamama · 10/08/2019 01:02

OP that is the most horrific story about the spotlights and the rodents. Grim. Hopefully this story finishes with a nicer conclusion. Wondering if this crazy weather or power cuts play any part?

WelshMoth · 10/08/2019 01:17

Have you any children that like to make slime? DD was bloody obsessed with the stuff and, after investigating a particular whiff from a corner of her room, I found a sandwich box full of the the mutant stuff and it was quite literally bubbling. Hideous stuff was alive. Could it be you have slime, that's getting gassy and bubbling occasionally?

(She's now banned after a well earned bollocking. I'm trying to bribe her to learn crochet to take her mind off the pointless goo).

wigglybluelines · 10/08/2019 01:58

Have you any children that like to make slime?

Yes! My 6yo is obsessed with it!

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a pot of slime in the cupboard. I'll look in the morning.

Bubbling and gassy would describe the sound well. And, I did notice a chemical smell in the cupboard, come to think of it - I assumed it was craft materials of some kind - did the bubbly slime smell?

OP posts:
wigglybluelines · 10/08/2019 02:00

Babymamamama it was awful. The upstairs neighbour moved out (he rented) because the smell was so bad he couldn't use his flat.

And, the raining poo was something else, months and months of rat poo raining all over my kitchen. Uurgh.

ladybird69 the smoke alarms were new and fitted about 3 months ago, I think it's probably not them. (But adding to the list of maybe-you-never-knows)

WelshMoth · 10/08/2019 08:18

Wiggly it bloody reeked.

I gagged when I opened the lid and I've got a strong stomach.

I was half expecting it to leap
Out the box and make a run for it.

I'm actually rather annoyed that this fad exists on such a massive scale. Encouraging the mixing of different 'harmless' substances, my foot! It smelled and it bubbled. Uuurgh.

Scruffalicious · 10/08/2019 08:57

Has OP been eaten by slime, do you think?

WelshMoth · 10/08/2019 16:20
Grin
wigglybluelines · 10/08/2019 16:40

I'm still here! No bubbling slime creature ate me up in the night!

Been busy today, haven't been back to the cupboard to investigate. Hopefully will get a chance later...

Saturday night noise-hunting!

JuniperSling · 10/08/2019 18:45

It could be a big fat moth (shudders). I had one behind the radiator at work once ~ it kept making hissing noises. I also remember when I was younger at home I kept hearing a noise as though it was raining behind the curtain in the kitchen. That turned out to be a giant moth too (I'm terrified of the bloody things!)

wigglybluelines · 10/08/2019 19:04

Oh, we do get moths in the house, sometimes great bit ones!

The kids need the hall light on, but then moths come in (too hot to shut the windows most days) and then they lurk about as they can't work out how to get out.

But - that was an odd noise for a moth! I've never heard one hiss!
