Childhood memories destroyed...

I had this wonderful childhood memory of Bird’s Dream Topping so I bought some today and tried it. It’s horrible. It has a very vaguely similar taste of what I remember it to be but it’s like the savoury version... may as well be cheese for all the fun it was eating it. Even red jelly couldn’t fix it.

What things did you love as a child that companies have later destroyed?

All food that was brilliant in the 70s and 80s that's still around now just tastes like crap. They've ruined everything. EVERYTHING I tell thee.....

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 11/08/2019 12:57

Sicario they sell Nestles cream in a tin in Asda. It's with the instant whip, angel delight area if i remember. I have some in the fridge, just checked it for you and mine expired last year ! I'll probably still eat it tho.

In the name of science, I bought original Lucozade today. It is, indeed, shite.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/08/2019 21:09

I just attempted to start a thread about McVities Waffles. They used to be fluffy and thick and delicious when toasted. They are now very very thin, toasted they just crumble when you put butter on, and untoasted they are like biscuits.

Glenryck Atlantic Pilchards - thanks to overfishing, they are now horrible Pacific Pilchards

Ah, that explains that one then. Sad

Wagon Wheels have shrunk (as have most chocolate bars) and the chocolate coating tastes nasty. Very disappointing.

I noticed on the packaging it says "chocolate style coating" Envy

LuxuryWoman2018 · 12/08/2019 14:53

Oh wagon wheels are tiny.

Rowgtfc72 · 12/08/2019 17:29

My dad worked at findus and always bought bags of crispy pancakes seconds and also French bread pizza. They came in bags of 50!
Certainly don't taste now how I remember.

writersbeenblocked · 12/08/2019 17:43

I perceive Lucozade as an illness drink as well... but now it's more likely to cause my illness than cure it! The pink one isn't too bad, but the orange one... Envy (not envy)

sueelleker · 12/08/2019 20:13

Tizer-I tried some recently and it had almost no taste at all. And the Vesta Paella-they've taken the dried chicken out, and whatever they used to colour it yellow. It hardly tastes of anything now.

AnkleWarmersAndPixieBoots · 12/08/2019 20:24

Yep, everything I enjoyed as a child in the 80's tastes shite now 😩

Weaverspin · 12/08/2019 20:33

Yes, the spicy curry pot noodle used to taste of something - AND have a sachet of even more spicy sauce to add. I quite enjoyed it as a snack 20-ish years ago! Now it tastes of nothing and has that pathetic dribble of sweet mango in a plastic sachet. Deeply disappointing.

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 12/08/2019 20:38

Matey bubble bath. Found some in Sainsbury’s a few years ago. Was so excited but it doesn’t smell the same AT ALL and it got chucked out in the end. Gutted.

Cheap pop. Used to get a massive bottle of cherryade. Tasted amazing. And irn bru/tizer/panda pop. All disappeared or just pure shite now.

HazelBite · 12/08/2019 21:05

My nephew bought me a box of black magic chocolates, they are NOT the same as they used to be.

If I want a chocolate treat now I buy a bar of ASDA's smart Price Milk Chocolate (30p) it tastes like milk chocolate in my childhood used to tyaste like.

FlamedToACrisp · 14/08/2019 01:06

@YouSayPotatoesISayVodka
Yeah, Matey bubble bath tastes horrible now.

I miss Woodleigh Green Apple shampoo.

I agree about the Dream Topping. It used to set better and have this lovely vanilla flavour. Now it doesn't set as well as it used to, and it's pretty flavourless.
It's the same with instant mash. I used to love the taste of that, it had a special kind of flavour. Now that flavour has all gone, unless you add your own flavourings to it.
