Childhood memories destroyed...

I had this wonderful childhood memory of Bird’s Dream Topping so I bought some today and tried it. It’s horrible. It has a very vaguely similar taste of what I remember it to be but it’s like the savoury version... may as well be cheese for all the fun it was eating it. Even red jelly couldn’t fix it.

What things did you love as a child that companies have later destroyed?

Pot noodles.. I crave them now n then but they taste bland... I have to add salt.
Coco pop's... Bland

Everything has sweeteners in it now.

Soreen malt loaf!

We used to have it with thick butter on when I was a kid and it was gorgeous. I bought a pack a few weeks ago because it was on special offer. I can bloody well see why! Just tasted like a big sticky blob of sugar. Absolutely rank.

Straight in the bin Angry

I miss old lucozade, am I wrong in thinking it was generally drunk when you were ill?

I remember having loads of it when I was in hospital. Probably not great to give an immobile child crap tons of sugar (got fat)a

Do toast toppers still exist? My mam loved them but even then I thought they tasted vaguely of sick

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 09/08/2019 10:27

I loved Toast Toppers! I don't think they exist anymore.

Malt loaf is the same to me albeit smaller.

I loved pacers as a child. Who made them? Maybe we can get a petition going to bring them back.

fussychica · 09/08/2019 10:27

I too used to love Soreen. Thanks for the heads up Ecocabby, I shall crave it no longer.
I used to eat lots of pretty sweet stuff as a kid but my tastes have definitely changed so I know I'd pretty much hate it all now.

EcocabbyRickShaw · 09/08/2019 11:12

drpeabody I suspect Soreen deteriorated quite early on then Sad. It had been many years since I'd had any

Camomila · 09/08/2019 11:38

estate' (Italian ice tea drink in a little plastic cup with straw) Used to love it, now can only taste sugar.

Doobigetta · 09/08/2019 12:15

Toast toppers definitely tasted a bit of sick

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 09/08/2019 12:48

Not from my childhood but early 20s-cafinesse coffee. You kept it in the fridge and squeezed the bottle up to a certain point depending on the strength you wanted your coffee. Pour into your cup and add hot water. It was really smooth and I loved it. I remember having two Cafinesse mugs that I sent off for. I don't know what happened to them though.

Mighty White bread was the bread of my early teens.

I tried French Set yogurts recently as I loved them as a child. Bloody awful. I suspect sweeteners are the cause of the decline in taste.

Gold bars now taste better than they used to. Fyi.

KindergartenKop · 09/08/2019 15:03

There was a thread about toast toppers last week. They were discontinued a couple of years ago. A poster found an out of date tin at the back of her cupboard and enjoyed it live on the thread.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 09/08/2019 15:17

Sterilised cream still exists but it’s not called that anymore it’s called extra thick cream and can be found in the red and white carnation tin in Sainsbury’s next to the evap milk

Ilovetolurk · 09/08/2019 15:22

Potato waffles taste shit these days

Beef monster munch. What went wrong there

Agree re findus crispy pancakes too. They used to be the highlight of my week

Miltonj · 09/08/2019 15:39

Bloody broken, breadline, Brexit Britain.

PhillipeFellope · 09/08/2019 18:48

Mini chicken kievs, they were an amazing treat. Now they're made with turkey, are loads smaller and you don't get half the creamy cheese sauce in the middle. I still buy them in hope though. Grin

pollywollydoodler · 09/08/2019 21:29

Sandwich spread on thick, white sliced bread with butter. I lived on this for lunch as a teen. Built up to trying it recently-it was like puke on cotton wool 🤮🤮

StinkyWizleteets · 10/08/2019 00:53

I forgot about milky ways - I was distraught at 18/19 when they changed the recipe and the inside became white yeaurch instead of the lovely brown whipped up loveliness. Flytes tried something similar for a while but the chocolate was vulgar.

Oxtail soup. Bleuch.

Deathraystare · 10/08/2019 06:39

I remember loving peanut butter. Now it is just clag city and either too sickly sweet r salty or just plain clag.

Also Vesta meals (I think they are still around). We were so sophisticated! Now I can imagine they would not taste nice at all!

isitautumnyet · 10/08/2019 14:17

a lot food and drink has gone downhill since recipe changes due to sugar and salt .

Oh what I'd give for a bottle of lucozade before the recipe change

CigarsofthePharoahs · 10/08/2019 15:47

At least modern fruit squash doesn't give me an asthma attack. Tastes rank, but doesn't attempt to kill me.
Findus crispy pancakes have gone nasty, haven't they?
On the other hand, I grew up in a house where we didn't have cream. Just elmlea in its nasty plasticy horrible-ness. You'd whip it to top a trifle and it had the consistency of pollyfilla.
Then one day I had a trifle (made by DH) that had real cream. My word!
Plus we only ever had the naff supermarket own angel delight so the modern branded stuff doesn't taste too bad to me!
I had a very deprived childhood when it came to desserts and processed food.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 10/08/2019 15:48

DH just bought a galaxy bar. What the hell has happened to it? It's weird. Used to be rich and creamy, now it's sour.
Grumble.

Grumble.

Palm oil and sweeteners happened.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/08/2019 15:55

Oh I apologise, Galaxy has sugar in.

TremblingFanjo · 10/08/2019 16:13

Gone over to the side of shite- Smarties, Angel delight. Lucozade lost it with the move to plastic bottles - the removal of the cellophane, the heavy glass bottle - all signified you were close to death Grin and could only be cured by the proper sugary sweetness.
And I used to love Ribena. I was even in the Ribena club - I got to go to the factory and everything. Now it's tasteless shite.
