Childhood memories destroyed...

I had this wonderful childhood memory of Bird’s Dream Topping so I bought some today and tried it. It’s horrible. It has a very vaguely similar taste of what I remember it to be but it’s like the savoury version... may as well be cheese for all the fun it was eating it. Even red jelly couldn’t fix it.

What things did you love as a child that companies have later destroyed?

I can’t even think what it’s called, but You know that chocolate source that goes hard when you put it on ice cream. I loved it as a nipper. Had it a few months ago as an adult and near threw up. I think it’s our taste buds that change rAther than products.

UAEMum · 08/08/2019 20:19

Angel delight - bloody horrible now

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 08/08/2019 20:20

I remember the sauce, was it called Crackin something? I used to enjoy wagon wheels, when they were bigger. And I remember them as tasting better!

Greensleeves · 08/08/2019 20:20

Findus Crispy Pancakes. They were almost magical to me as a child, something really special that I only had very occasionally at Other People's Houses and my mother denounced as rubbish and a waste of money.

Bought some recently. They were rubbish and a waste of money Sad

LuxuryWoman2018 · 08/08/2019 20:21

Most chocolate biscuits, penguins used to be nice but taste weird now and are merely bite sized as are clubs.

ShimmeringIce · 08/08/2019 20:22

Was the chocolate sauce Magic Mountain? I loved cheese crispy pancakes too but rubbish now - maybe because I wouldn’t dream of frying them!

fantasticfringe · 08/08/2019 20:24

I think it was ice magic, the top? was a little mountain top that came off the bottle I think??

megletthesecond · 08/08/2019 20:27

Banana medicine.
They've taken the sugar out and now it tastes like artificially sweet but bitter fluorescent yellow milk. My poor kids when they had to have it.

StinkyWizleteets · 08/08/2019 20:28

Ice magic never worked for me quite like the advert so even as a child I didn’t eat it.

I loved crispy pancakes. I lived on them one summer when I was 17 and my mum went to work abroad.

There was Ice Magic and Monster Crackin’ Sauce that went hard on ice cream!

AlwaysCheddar · 08/08/2019 21:01

Opal fruits (refuses to call them starburst)

Bacardi101 · 08/08/2019 21:16

Tip top - that tin cream! My mum used to put it on tinned fruit and I loved it. Tried it again not so long ago and it was vile Envy

Isadora2007 · 08/08/2019 21:22

Heinz macaroni and spag Bol are not salty enough and just taste rank now. Used to love a slice of toast with tinned macaroni on it too 😔
Cadbury’s chocolate has also gone downhill sadly.

AltheaVestr1t · 08/08/2019 21:24

Literally all of these things!! 80s childhood. Very excitedly made a Birds trifle with my kids last Christmas. It did not go down well. ☹️

GiggleMcDimples · 08/08/2019 21:26

@Greensleeves I'm with you on the findus crispy pancakes. Wtf did our parents feed us!? 🤮

Candymay · 08/08/2019 21:31

I can’t find the tinned cream anywhere! My mum used to always have it in a bowl with sugar sprinkled on top to go with our baked deserts. Someone here said they had found it. Where? I’m desperate to have it again!

BareBelliedSneetch · 08/08/2019 21:34

Spaghetti hoops. I used to love them when I was small. Bought some for my own children and they are properly grim.

Candymay · 08/08/2019 21:34

Ah i just saw that the earlier poster was talking about Tip top. That’s not the one we had. It was condensed cream I think? In a small tin the size of a tuna tin. Absolutely delicious.
I never had the crispy pancakes. Chocolates and sweets have got smaller and less exciting. (Although I have got decidedly bigger and it’s all related).

JassyRadlett · 08/08/2019 21:36

You have made my day by teaching me (immigrant) that Dream Topping is a Real Thing, and not just invented by Jasper Fforde to destroy the world in the Thursday Next books.

Karmin · 08/08/2019 21:43

The reason it tastes wrong is because all the real sugar and luminescent preservatives have been banned and removed, along with salt, and it is instead filled with palm oil and other chemical shit

onalongsabbatical · 08/08/2019 21:43

Rolos. Used to like 'em, bought a tube recently they're now officially vile.

Avocadodance · 08/08/2019 21:45

BBQ beef super noodles don't taste like I remember them. They have probably cut the salt in them or something Sad

letsgomaths · 08/08/2019 21:46

The Tower Bridge Museum. There used to be a lot of stages and exhibits to it, including moving and talking statues of Harry the painter and Sir Henry, and Clive Swift playing the bridge's late architect. Now it's just the walkways over the river, and not much else.

Also lots of playground equipment has been transformed to become much "safer", the parks just aren't how I remember them, with their once tall slides and climbing frames.

Hassled · 08/08/2019 21:46

Caramacs don't taste like heaven in a mouthful like they used to. They just taste like sugar now. I used to adore those things.

Hassled · 08/08/2019 21:49

Oh yes - and the Chamber of Horrors at Madame Tussaud's. It scared the absolute wits out of me as a child - my own kids strolled through and barely blinked.
