Help, please can somebody recommend a vacuum cleaner? Not a Dyson.

I have three dyson cleaners, none of which work properly. I am at my wits end. I can't afford anything too fancy.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable vacuum for around £250 that isn't huge as my house is small. I can't use one of those drag across the floor ones as I have a bad back.

Dyson 1 is a thing that's the size and weight of a Sherman tank, but doesn't actually suck.

Dyson 2 is mil's old one and is small and ineffectual - a bit like mil.

Dyson 3 is a stick one with a no longer charging battery. It doesn't suck much either anyway.

By a 'drag across the floor one' do you mean a cylinder or an upright?. I've just bought a Miele cat and dog after seeing it recommended on here, to replace my cordless hoover that was useless. My floors have never been do clean. It's a cylinder, around £200 from Amazon. It is quite heavy though so might not suit you.

I have a vax 32v and I love it. Great suction, lightweight, easy to empty.

I love my Shark!

ineedaknittedhat · 03/08/2019 13:55

I mean like a Henry drag across the floor type. It means I have to keep stooping down slightly which gives me back pain.

Thanks for these recommendations, I'm having a look now.

I’ve just bought a cordless shark to replace my cordless vacuum. It’s amazing. Mine comes with two batteries, lasting about an hour in total. Easy to empty and is brilliant on both carpet and hard floor. Bit over your budget at around £350 (Cheapest I found it was direct from the shark website on offer) but I’m so pleased with it. Beats the dyson hands down.

KTCluck · 03/08/2019 13:59

*replace my cordless dyson

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2019 14:03

We've got a shark which is OK. Good on carpets, OK on hard floors. Still pushes crumbs round a bit.
Miele was excellent and hoovered under bed etc but flimsily built
Dysons OK but not long lasting

enjoyingscience · 03/08/2019 14:04

What about a Henry then? We’ve got one and it’s ace. Never breaks, works well, not heavy. Love it.

enjoyingscience · 03/08/2019 14:06

Oops - just saw you couldn’t use a drag one. It’s got such a long hose I hardly drag it al all to be fair - stick it in the middle and pootle around it!

pontiouspilates · 03/08/2019 14:08

Love my cordless Vax 32V. Light, easy to empty, good attachments.

SospanFrangipan · 03/08/2019 14:15

Love my shark duo clean 👍

Clarke45 · 03/08/2019 14:16

Another vote for shark. I've had several Dyson's, a miele and now a corded shark. The shark is hands down the best vacuum I've ever had!

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2019 14:16

Henry has aspirations ti be a premier league footballer judging by the amount of dramatic fallings over

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 03/08/2019 15:14

I’m a cleaner. I clean houses all day. Been through a fair few hoovers in my time. I have a shark. Was actually stunned how good it was. Get a lift away. Then you don’t have to lug the entire thing up the stairs to clean them. The filters are easy to clean and get out any blockage ( found Dylan terrible for this ). Everything comes apart quickly to clean I have to do this once a month.

It is also lightweight as well. I needed that to get it easily to and from the car.
Never thought I would recommend a shark. But I am.

YesQueen · 03/08/2019 15:21

@StealthPolarBear GrinGrin
Henry went to my dad after I kicked him one too many times for falling over. My dad loves him and pats him on the head and talks lovingly to him

I bought a shark Grin

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2019 16:22

Lol at Henry having to be adopted.
Dh has tried the shark stairs thing, I haven't yet. He seemed really impressed too.
Does everyone else who currently owns a shark sing the song while they hoover too? Just me?

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2019 16:24

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 just spotted you're a cleaner. So maybe not unless you're alone :o clients may look at you oddly

GreenTulips · 03/08/2019 16:27

I brought a shark duo and it’s brilliant! Much better than the Dyson.

MrsCasares · 03/08/2019 16:32

I have two sharks. A lift away and a duoclean cordless. They both sleep in the same cupboard. I am hoping they might breed.

I love my sharkys. And yes I do sing the shark song when I’m hoovering!

DotBall · 03/08/2019 16:42

I have a Shark Liftaway. Best vacuum I’ve owned (out of 3 Dysons and a Miele Cat n Dog pull along).

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 03/08/2019 18:49

@StealthPolarBear I do Grin. In fact I get my groove on when I’m cleaning. Thank goodness there is no one to see me most of the time

NiLunNiLautre · 03/08/2019 19:08

Watching with interest. Hoping someone will recommend something super powerful, that is tough, won't break, and can pick up dog hair. Don't care if it's expensive.

I have a newish Vax Air. It is shite.

TheFairyCaravan · 03/08/2019 19:11

We've got a Shark Liftaway. It's the best vacuum we've ever had. They do a pet one, too, for people who need that.
