Help, please can somebody recommend a vacuum cleaner? Not a Dyson.

I have three dyson cleaners, none of which work properly. I am at my wits end. I can't afford anything too fancy.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable vacuum for around £250 that isn't huge as my house is small. I can't use one of those drag across the floor ones as I have a bad back.

Agree Miele was the best for actual hoovering

Mustbetimeforachange · 04/08/2019 07:59

We got an AEG VForce one which was Which best buy (£99). It seems great so far.

Ifihadapoundd · 04/08/2019 08:33

We just purchased a shark to replace our dyson. I am now regretting ever buying a dyson. Shark are brilliant.

Have you looked at Henry recently OP. I love mine, recent purchase after more than a decade of various dysons.

It’s small and light (half the size of my decorator’s Henry. The suction is amazing.

Benjispruce · 04/08/2019 08:46

I love my Henry but it’s so heavy and it’s a struggle to balance it on the stairs. Won’t pull around corners etc Can’t fault it for power and tools though. Hadn’t realised they’d upgraded it.

I have a Miele and a Dyson, both are great. You do need to make sure you clean out the filters occasionally on the Dyson. It makes a big difference to the performance.

I have two vacuums - shark and this one . I can thoroughly recommend the shark, though I'm not sure this model is still in production, which is a shame as the size would be ideal for a small home and it was around £100. The other one was a prize I won (thanks again mumsnet) And is honestly the best and most versatile vacuum cleaning system I've ever used. My family borrow it frequently and acetone of them has told me that it is better than whatever they are using -including shark, Dyson and miele models. Sadly, it's cost puts it far out of most people's reach, but for any e who is prepared to spend that much, it's amazing.
Generally, though, I'd definitely rate shark as a brand.

Don't those of you with a Shark - and pets - find that it needs emptying all the time? The clouds of dust and skin cells when you tip it out, plus having to wash dirty filters (boak) make me feel that bagless cleaners really aren't for me.

avocadotofu · 04/08/2019 10:14

Our Miele vacuum is great.

NiLunNiLautre · 04/08/2019 10:16

SkelterHelter I had around 20 years of Dysons which were OKish to empty and clean, but still a bit gross... and it’s annoying when you realise you need to clean the filter but the house is filthy and it will take 24 hours to dry!

My Air Vax Pet is in a whole new league of yuck though. The collection compartment is smaller and gets clogged up with pet hair around the top part. The mess doesn’t just come out easily, I have to take the whole thing apart and mess and filth gets everywhere. I do it outside, but it still gets all over me.

I will be buying a new vacuum cleaner probably today. Will likely go for a Shark or .

SkelterHelter · 04/08/2019 10:26

Go for a Sebo NiLun. It has bags!

Eloisedublin123 · 04/08/2019 10:34

There’s a lot of sharks online
Can someone post a link to the ones you recommend pl?

Herefortheduration · 04/08/2019 10:34

Shark liftaway. I love it and I've never said that about a cleaning item in my life before!!!

Scissor · 04/08/2019 10:35

Moved from Dyson to Henry to Miele to Sebo..i truly am committed and settled in a very happy relationship with Sebo. Been 4 years now ❤️

stayathomer · 04/08/2019 10:35

Bought a Henry ( well, Hettie!!) After my friend noticed every hotel she'd work in had one. Long chord, great suction and a smiley face. Love it!!!

NiLunNiLautre · 04/08/2019 10:36

Yes, I meant to write Sebo at the end of my last post there, but iPad didn’t like it! I’ll be checking them out.

Yes, the thought of bags is very tempting. It’s funny that the lack of bags (and seeing all the crap in your cleaner) was an innovative selling point when Dysons came out!

stayathomer · 04/08/2019 10:36

Ps have had two bad Mieles but everyone seems to think they're the best brand out there!!

Benjispruce · 04/08/2019 11:09

As I said upthread I have a Henry. The only problems are weight, awkward shape to balance on the stairs and the wheels don't follow easily.
They are however brilliant for actual vacuuming, tools, bags and ease of bag changing etc.
I bought a Bosch Athlete cordless. It was expensive but not worth it. I use it in the week to quickly vac the living room. but emptying the dust and crap, plus the brushes get tangles up with hairs(3 females with long hair and a dog)Just got Henry out to give whole house a good going over and my carpet looks new. Henry never struggles with anything. Plus he is made in England.

Benjispruce · 04/08/2019 11:11

The clouds of dust and skin cells when you tip it out, plus having to wash dirty filters (boak) make me feel that bagless cleaners really aren't for me.

I have realised this.

Benjispruce · 04/08/2019 11:12

The Henry bags are so big, fit so tightly that there is never any mess. Seems to be months between changes whereas the Athlete is almost every few days.

StealthPolarBear · 04/08/2019 11:14

I have frequently said that if bagless cleaners had been around first the in venter of the cleaner with a bag would have been hailed as the genius.

TillyTheTiger · 04/08/2019 11:16

Shark liftaway. I used to hate vacuuming, now I love it.

LowbrowVictoriana · 04/08/2019 11:18

Absolutely agree, Stealth

ineedaholidaynow · 04/08/2019 11:26

I have a very old hoover (probably 25 years old Blush) and I re-use the hoover bags (presume they don’t make them anymore!), so I see all the rubbish the hoover picks up.

Really need a new hoover so reading this thread with interest.

SkelterHelter · 04/08/2019 11:38

That is so true. I see GTech have brought out a bagged cleaner now. I can't see any advantages of a bagless cleaner, the container is always dirty, the dirt goes everywhere when you empty, the filters which you wash but never get really clean....
