Would you be happy with this wallpapering job?

I had my son and my bedrooms redecorated and I am really not happy with mine, but I don't know if I am being unreasonable as the owner of the decorating company said he can't fault it and it's a first rate job. Admittedly the ceiling is sloping but it doesn't fully explain or make up for why the decorator cut the wallpaper in such a way that part of the previous pattern is showing. The owner of the company said it wouldn't bother him but it bothers me, but apparently nothing can be done apart from cut a strip of the plain part of the wallpaper and stick it over

I have no experience of decorating and decorators, I found this company as they were highly rated on checkatrade. Am I being overly fussy? Maybe it's because when I am in bed I face this wall and so I am very aware of it as it is always in my line of sight. I have posted pictures of the wall in question

No I wouldn't be but I doubt you'll have much comeback. You need to be very explicit how you want the pattern to line up at the top/bottom/sides and then they need to measure it out to see what's possible.

katiegoestoaldi · 16/07/2019 14:32

If he had just cut the wallpaper by one inch so it was that little bit higher, the previous heart wouldn't be showing and the hearts at the bottom of the wall wouldn't have quite so much missing from the bottom of them

I wouldn't be happy with it, no. What's it like at the bottom?

That would drive me insane

HyggeHeart · 16/07/2019 14:33

no, i really wouldn't be happy with that, I dont think you are being fussy at all.

TroubleWithNargles · 16/07/2019 14:34

No, I wouldn't be happy if I'd paid an expert to hang that either.

Prettypetal85 · 16/07/2019 14:34

Presumably whoever did the previous wallpapering had no problem with getting it to the right height, so it’s nonsense to blame the wonky ceiling.

I’m no expert on decorating but I wouldn’t be happy either. If the way to rectify it is to paste over a plain strip then it’s up to them to do it in my opinion.

mummymayhem18 · 16/07/2019 14:34

Like you say that shouldn't be showing. Looks silly like that. You are the customer,if you aren't happy with it tell them.Never mind what he says. I take it you have paid now?

Soola · 16/07/2019 14:36

Unacceptable.

SavoyCabbage · 16/07/2019 14:36

I’d rather part of another heart was showing at the top than it wasn’t. It’s better not worse in my mind. The pattern is unusually regular for wallpaper.

I wallpapered this wall myself and made sure the pattern wasn’t whole at the top.

hellsbellsmelons · 16/07/2019 14:41

I could probably live with it - if my dad had done it for nothing.
But for a professional, it's shocking!

katiegoestoaldi · 16/07/2019 14:46

I haven't paid yet

I will post a photo of the bottom of the wall in a minute

It's at an impasse at the moment, with the owner of the company saying there's nothing wrong with it, it's a first class job, the guy who did it has worked for him for 30 years and this is the first complaint so this is really saying something etc etc and me saying it's really not aesthetically pleasing and I can't understand why it was cut and hung that way and the sloping ceiling (that he kept mentioning) did not explain why it was hung like this

katiegoestoaldi · 16/07/2019 14:48

This is what it's like across the bottom of the wall

That is so wrong. The 'spare' pattern should ALWAYS be at the bottom of the all. ALWAYS!!!

WHover did it just started witht he alreay cut edge of th paper and then matched it all to that! NOT what is supposed to happen.

Have you paid? Can you leave a review, a facebook post much the same as your thread?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/07/2019 15:02

there's nothing wrong with it Thre is, the customer fins it jarring

it's a first class job The skill of the papering is not in dispute

the guy who did it has worked for him for 30 years Then he should know better

and this is the first complaint Really? Come on now...

so this is really saying something etc etc Yes! It is saying that he made a mistake and beautifully duplicated it with every strip of paper he hung!

They have to come clean, they can't simply stick to "I can't see what you mean"

katiegoestoaldi · 16/07/2019 15:02

Not paid yet. Should I offer a reduced amount? What do I do from here? They're telling me there's absolutely nothing they can do apart from cut some plain wallpaper and stick it across the top of the wall. He can't guarantee whether I'd see the line or not where the top layer of wallpaper meets what is on there already

Oblomov19 · 16/07/2019 15:04

Agreed. This is so wrong. Unanimously.

hellsbellsmelons · 16/07/2019 15:07

So it's wrong at the top AND the bottom.
Blimey that is one major fuck up!

Polly7805 · 16/07/2019 15:09

That's annoying! I would complain

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/07/2019 15:09

What he can do is take it off and re-paper the wall. How much did the paper cost?

You do NOT want to accept a stick and paste job from a professional! You could have done that yourself!

Soola · 16/07/2019 15:09

Coving would hide the top but I would factor the cost of it to knock iff the bill.

However, the bottom is still wrong.

Show then this thread.

The placement of the pattern is shoddy and I personally would not want to pay for it.

TrickyKid · 16/07/2019 15:10

I wouldn't be happy. With that sort of pattern repeat you should have a full heart at the top.
@savoy that works because it's a continuous pattern. Nice wallpaper too!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/07/2019 15:10
  • Play fair, Helen. They can't adjust the wall height Grin

Then again, had he made it right at the top it would look as though a miraculously accurate jop had been done!

KurriKurri · 16/07/2019 15:11

By the look of your second photo (and judging b the gap between patterns at the top) - they could have fitted on a whole heart at the bottom and the top. Thta's hopeless. I would find it irritating and ask them to redo it. If you only pay part or ask for a reduction, you;ve still got to pay for it to be redone + more paper, depends whether you can live with it or not (live with + reduction: Can't live with = don;t pay anything and ask for cost of wallpaper)

Summersunshine2 · 16/07/2019 15:16

I would hate that. As a professional he should have known better!
