Would you be happy with this wallpapering job?

I had my son and my bedrooms redecorated and I am really not happy with mine, but I don't know if I am being unreasonable as the owner of the decorating company said he can't fault it and it's a first rate job. Admittedly the ceiling is sloping but it doesn't fully explain or make up for why the decorator cut the wallpaper in such a way that part of the previous pattern is showing. The owner of the company said it wouldn't bother him but it bothers me, but apparently nothing can be done apart from cut a strip of the plain part of the wallpaper and stick it over

I have no experience of decorating and decorators, I found this company as they were highly rated on checkatrade. Am I being overly fussy? Maybe it's because when I am in bed I face this wall and so I am very aware of it as it is always in my line of sight. I have posted pictures of the wall in question

No, it’s not a first rate job, is it! The thing with internal decorating, whether it’s painting, tiling, etc is that it’s not just about the technical skill - there is also a bit of judgment and common sense involved, to make it look right...

annielouise · 16/07/2019 20:14

I'd be really annoyed, especially as it was avoidable - and a good decorator would have taken care to do that. What is more annoying to me is the reaction from the boss, trying to pull the wool over your eyes and pressure you into acquiescing. It's wrong. Tell them you could have had a whole heart at the top and the bottom!

Is there some wallpapering website that explains about patterned wallpaper that you can say, look, all these websites agree with me so why you trying to make me out to be unreasonable?

annielouise · 16/07/2019 20:16

Yes, you're right Notcontent. Friends had a bathroom tiled. Good job but where he started meant where he ended there was only room for one inch of the tile going down - right in the shower corner as you face it, worse possible place. No thought or planning at all.

You'd have to get quite thin coving though otherwise you'll cut the top off the first hearts. I love your choice of paper OP.

ElizaPancakes · 16/07/2019 20:37

How irritating. I can see it must be a decent job elsewhere, lines up and no bubbles etc, but that is a really shoddy job and ridiculous the way it’s been done.

I think I’d ask them to purchase and apply coving to the top all the way round. I’d rather see the very top of the hearts chopped off than those tiny little bits.

EnidButton · 16/07/2019 21:18

Will the coving be put right on top of the paper? Because that's good girl now but when the paper is changed in the future it'll be hard to remove nearly from the top if there's paper underneath the coving.

Savoy the way your pattern is cut off wouldn't annoy me. It looks good and intentional. But because OP's paper has a white background and the hearts are in straight rows it doesn't look right. If half the hearts were showing it'd be a bit better.

EnidButton · 16/07/2019 21:19

*good for now

Not good girl! Hmm

Crunchymum · 16/07/2019 21:26

I don't have my glasses on, it looks like 3-D wallpaper Shock

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 16/07/2019 21:27

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

I could not live with that tiny bit of heart either, it should have been moved up a tiny bit.

Would you consider a border along the top rather than coving etc? Might be hard to find something to match and the right width but could be worthwhile looking online to see what is available, maybe something in grey, red and white to match. Or just grey, or just red.

I would be asking the company who put the wallpaper on in the first place to pay for the border and to put it on free, then pay for the original work once it is sorted to your liking. If you pay for the work beforehand they might ignore you trying to put it right and you might have to pay for it and put it on yourself/pay someone else to do it.

badg3r · 16/07/2019 21:38

That's really bad. I would colour match the wallpaper and paint over the top bits. Don't pay the full amount!

NavyBerry · 16/07/2019 21:55

Sorry, this is ridiculous. I'd be very unhappy about it. In my mind they'd have to redo the whole wall at their expense.

katiegoestoaldi · 17/07/2019 08:23

Thanks all who have replied. I thought about coving however I don't want the top of the hearts chopped off (equally annoying I think) or to make things harder next time I come to decorate. Things I hadn't considered till they were raised here

I've emailed them offering a couple of solutions, either they put it right or I just pay for my son's room and get someone else in to redo that wall.

I shall be back to update you all once I hear from them

I see someone else has suggested a border, they are very dated for sure but would provide an easy solution if wide enough to cover the first row of hearts in full?

Asta19 · 17/07/2019 11:51

I've hung wallpaper just a handful of times and I would have done a better job than that! I'd be fuming if it was me. I really don't understand why he's done it like that.

I don't think coving is going to work, it would have to be very thin not to cut the top of the next row of hearts off and you don't really want the coving on top of the wallpaper. I think badg3r suggestion will probably work best. Colour match the background and paint over those bits.

katiegoestoaldi · 18/07/2019 22:07

I've heard from the owner of the decorating company. They're going to repaper the wall Smile

mummymayhem18 · 18/07/2019 23:07

Yay,that's excellent news. Too right they should x

hellsbellsmelons · 19/07/2019 07:58

That is good news.
Hopefully they do a much better job the 2nd time around!

GaraMedouar · 19/07/2019 08:07

Yay - result. I was going to come on and say it needs re papering. That would annoy me sooooo much!

x2boys · 19/07/2019 08:51

I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at ,but it you are paying for it you expect an expert job , the boss would say he can't fault it wouldn't be ,my dh has decorated our walls recently and he's there are some faults , but he's not an expert .

Soola · 19/07/2019 09:50

Great result.

Will it be the same guy coming back? I wouldn’t want the bodger in my house again.

taylorowmu · 19/07/2019 09:55

Why are you looking at it

Comment of the thread Grin

I'm glad it's getting sorted OP.

CurlyMango · 20/07/2019 17:43

It’s not what I would be happy with either.

katiegoestoaldi · 23/07/2019 19:04

I have another problem Confused

This has appeared on one of the other walls. Has someone spilled something on it or has something seeped through from behind the wallpaper?

OP posts:
katiegoestoaldi · 23/07/2019 19:05

@Soola same guy. I will be absolutely clear with him this time. But he can't make the same mistake twice right? Confused

OP posts:
Soola · 23/07/2019 19:08

Don’t leave him alone in the house in case he has sour grapes and wanks in your knicker drawer or opens your ice cream and licks it whilst you’re not there.

I’d be standing in the room arms crossed! Grin
