Would you be happy with this wallpapering job?

I had my son and my bedrooms redecorated and I am really not happy with mine, but I don't know if I am being unreasonable as the owner of the decorating company said he can't fault it and it's a first rate job. Admittedly the ceiling is sloping but it doesn't fully explain or make up for why the decorator cut the wallpaper in such a way that part of the previous pattern is showing. The owner of the company said it wouldn't bother him but it bothers me, but apparently nothing can be done apart from cut a strip of the plain part of the wallpaper and stick it over

I have no experience of decorating and decorators, I found this company as they were highly rated on checkatrade. Am I being overly fussy? Maybe it's because when I am in bed I face this wall and so I am very aware of it as it is always in my line of sight. I have posted pictures of the wall in question

Going against the grain here (as I often do)....its not a bad job & it wouldnt bother me. The wallpaper would though. I dont think you've helped yourself with the pattern. It's going to be hard no matter how he cuts the paper as there is always going to be some pattern cut in half or missing.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/07/2019 15:19

no matter how he cuts the paper as there is always going to be some pattern cut in half or missing. There almost always is... invariably goes at the bottom of a wall!

TokyoSushi · 16/07/2019 15:22

Nope terrible, it looks like there should have been space for a whole heart at the top and the bottom.

NO, I don't think it's acceptable. Surely it was more work to cut it with the small bottom part the same as opposed to just straight up from the whole heart?!

I think you are right to demand it be re-done. If the company is professional, they should have insurance and should be the ones providing the new wallpaper, not you, as they are at fault.

verystressedmum · 16/07/2019 15:30

I agree there would have been space for whole hearts at the top and bottom, but he should have cut the paper so that at the top there was just a whole heart.
I would have accepted half a heart at the top because that would look better than these little dots.

It doesn't matter that it wouldn't bother him, he can have it in his own house. You don't like it and that's all that matters.

But would you consider thin coving at the top to hide the 'dots'?

suzy2b · 16/07/2019 15:34

Why are you looking at it ,usually have the bed against the pattern wall,i do my own wallpapering and i would have cut it at the top of heart

Magenta82 · 16/07/2019 15:36

That would annoy me! A professional should know better!

Chloemol · 16/07/2019 15:41

It’s wrong and basically they need to re wallpaper correctly at their cost

EnidButton · 16/07/2019 15:46

It'd annoy me every time I walked in the room. Doubly annoying when they won't admit it and redo it.

katiegoestoaldi · 16/07/2019 15:51

I know the feature wall is usually behind the bed, but I really like that paper so I wanted to be facing it, which I am now regretting Grin

I would be happy with thin coving, I mentioned it to the chief decorator but he dismissed it and suggested sticking some of the plain part of the wallpaper over the messy hearts at the top, or even worse and I didn't even entertain this which is why I didn't mention it previously, he suggested I get some of the grey wallpaper and stick strips all around the wall so the hearts would look like a panel

I have composed a draft email to them surmising what was said and putting forward two suggestions. Either they provide and fit coving or I pay for my son's room minus the cost of replacing that wall paper in my room and getting someone else in to finish the room

Not sent it yet though

@SavoyCabbage where is your wall paper from

StCharlotte · 16/07/2019 16:06

I know the feature wall is usually behind the bed

Says who? And why?

Anyway, YANBU. Don't give in.

wichitalinemanswoman · 16/07/2019 16:15

That's wrong. You need them to come back and do it right. It looks ridiculous and as if done with no thought.

Roughasabadgersbum · 16/07/2019 16:29

I love your choice of paper it's absolutely gorgeous..
As for the papering , no I wouldn't be happy at all.
It's not a good job for a professional decorator. I would be tempted to ask for it to be done again .. if you don't ask you don't get .

SavoyCabbage · 16/07/2019 16:47

Frog it's from Laura Ashley.

It's so weird for me that this would bother people when the opposite is true for me. I overheard people, talking about £30 hanging baskets the other week and the whole group were in agreement that £60 was a lot for hanging baskets because you would have to have two or it would look all wrong and I was thinking I would hate two.

qj17 · 16/07/2019 16:53

I wouldn't be happy either!

katiegoestoaldi · 16/07/2019 16:55

lol@Laura Ashley! The chief decorator hates Laura Ashley and immediately asked if the paper I had was from LA and the decorator he sent over joked about how much he hated Laura Ashley

It is very lovely paper @SavoyCabbage

The paper I bought was from I Want Wallpaper and is now out of stock Sad

I shall send over the email I wrote to the decorators this evening and see what they say, but I shall be standing my ground. Thanks everyone who didn't make me feel like I was overreacting and that I have valid points, unlike the company owner Angry

Think I'd have to have coving to cover the top bit.

DramaAlpaca · 16/07/2019 17:49

I'm with you as well, OP. That would annoy me every time I looked at it.

DickZillaofTheVilla · 16/07/2019 17:53

That’s irritating me just looking at the pictures I couldn’t live with it

BlankTimes · 16/07/2019 18:17

Could they paint over the top of the wallpaper with the same colour as the ceiling or even better colour-matched to the wallpaper.

A couple of coats should cover the bits of hearts at the very top that look like dots.

BuildBuildings · 16/07/2019 18:27

I wouldn't be happy no. I don't understand why they have done this.

We bought our first home last year after renting for ages. We've had various work done on it and my mum said that whoever was doing it would always do the thing you least expected and often the easiest thing. I thought this was quite pessimistic. However, even though we've had some good people in its fairly true. So I've learned to be really specific. I know that's not that helpful now but it's a lesson learned.

SavoyCabbage · 16/07/2019 18:28

So did mine Katie! ShockThat's why I did it myself. I've got a curved nine foot high wall with a sloping ceiling in my bedroom so I had to get non-Laura Ashley paper for that.

DonPablo · 16/07/2019 19:19

My husband isn't a decorator, but he is tradesman. He wants every customer to be happy. The very fact that you're not and he doesn't really care says it all.

What a shame. (This is why dh thinks everyone who approaches him thinks they're going to be ripped off. Ruins it for the decent ones)

LetsSplashMummy · 16/07/2019 19:50

Could you add a strip of cornice type wood round the top of the room? I'd prefer that to a strip of wallpaper.

However, I would also prefer a bit of heart to a whole heart at the top, so I'm obviously in the minority! I don't like things looking too planned, if it was all whole hearts it'd look too "framed," for me. So I don't think it's wrong, objectively, what they have done, but they should have checked with you first.
