Do you let DCs play naked in the garden?

DD is 3 and we have the paddling pool out for the nice weather. She has a ‘thing’ about wet clothes so as soon as she’s out of the pool she takes her costume off and won’t put it back on until it’s completely dry - I don’t have a million swimming costumes for her so I’ve been letting her play naked.

DBro has just called in and commented how inappropriate it is as ‘someone might see’. For reference, our garden isn’t overlooked at all, and due to high fences, neighbours on either side can only see into the garden from their upstairs windows.

So, what are your opinions on DC playing naked in the garden?

No

GrassIsntGreener · 29/06/2019 12:02

I always let me children do this when they were around that age.

GrassIsntGreener · 29/06/2019 12:03

*my

I should add, it's a very private back garden, which makes all the difference.

PotteringAlong · 29/06/2019 12:03

Yup, mine do. And I don’t have high fences between us and next door. I can’t get worked up about it

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 29/06/2019 12:04

I judge anyone who thinks a naked child playing on their own property is somehow inappropriate.
Has he got kids?!

LoafofSellotape · 29/06/2019 12:04

Yes.

If someone is perving over a 3 year old I doubt a swimming costume would make much difference tbh.

Emmabryant123 · 29/06/2019 12:04

No but only because I worry about all that exposed skin to the sun

Sissy79 · 29/06/2019 12:04

Nappies or pants on, yes.
Completely starkers, no.

S1naidSucks · 29/06/2019 12:05

Well my youngest is 24 so it probably wouldn’t be a good idea.

HairyDogsInUnusualPlaces · 29/06/2019 12:05

Fairly private back garden, absolutely fine to be naked.
Exposed front garden, probably not so much.

Floralnomad · 29/06/2019 12:06

My only issue with it would be from a sun safety POV , absolutely nothing wrong with children being nude in their own gardens , is your brother normally a bit of a prude .

SleepingIsOverrated · 29/06/2019 12:06

Yes... and I'd never have thought anything of it until this post!

Musicalstatues · 29/06/2019 12:07

Yes mine do all the time. They’re 7 and 4. Private back garden but to be honest even in our old house where one of the fences was lower they still did.

WeaselsRising · 29/06/2019 12:07

No, because I worry about sun damage, especially to areas that aren't usually exposed.

When mine were that age they would be in rash vests and long shorts rather than naked. My DM was obsessed with "getting some sun" when I was small and I often got really burnt. I have a lot of moles, so I am worried about skin cancer. She tried it with my DC as well, but mine have never had sunburn.

EmmaJR1 · 29/06/2019 12:08

Yes absolutely, covered in sun cream and most toys in the shady areas. My son 💩 in the garden yesterday though so I might rethink it... he's only 2 so I have to let him off! 🤦‍♀️

Drogonssmile · 29/06/2019 12:08

We have three boys 7.5, 5.5 and 2.5 running around naked plied with sun cream and in and out of the paddling pool, and through the sprinkler. Tried getting them to wear pants/shorts but gave up. They just don't want to keep them on. Private back garden only a 2-3 time a year occurrence. Meh. They're having loads of fun Grin

misskatamari · 29/06/2019 12:08

No I probably wouldn't, but not because of the "someone might see" aspect but more that I'd worry about their skin being exposed to the sun, even with cream on. If they were in the shade tho it wouldn't bother me

saturdaynightgin · 29/06/2019 12:10

DBro is 23 and doesn’t have any experience with children - they make him feel awkward.

We’re lucky that we have a large garden with equal amounts of shade and sun so DD isn’t always in direct sunlight - and she’s happy to have sun cream and a hat on!

Absolutely, if you can't run about nude in your own garden when you are little when can you?

BeardedMum · 29/06/2019 12:10

Yes when they were that age I did.

losenotloose · 29/06/2019 12:11

Yes.

Portulaca · 29/06/2019 12:13

No. Mine aren't little kids any more. But when they were, we lived next door to a twat who kept flying his drone across our garden. He was filming them playing in the paddling pool.

OhTheRoses · 29/06/2019 12:16

Mine did. Not an issue imo. And we were overlooked.

TwinkleWings · 29/06/2019 12:18

Yes!!! And the garden is overlooked by a few other houses. I'm not about to live my life worrying that everyone is a paedophile

MysweetAudrina · 29/06/2019 12:19

Of course yes and if they wanted to do it at a beach I would let them too. My dd11 and not developed at all yet stripped off to her knickers last week for an impromptu dip in the sea. If she's comfortable then I'm fine with that.
