Are there any gay parents in your kids school?

I’ve just been wondering. DS’s school is about 1500 people, and obviously I don’t know everyone, but due to my job, I’ve dealt with a huge chunk of the school. However, none, that I know of, are pupils with gay parents.

I was just wondering how common same sex families are? Perhaps it’s because I’m in ruralish scotland. I’d think it’d be more common in London or Edinburgh

We have from what I know, just one couple. The mum originally was married to a man and had children with him but then they got divorced and shes now married to a woman. that's the only people I think though!

00Sassy · 22/06/2019 16:17

In my ds class alone there’s 2 children with gay parents (that I know of)
Small primary school of around 100 children in a fairly rural north west area.

Noonemournsthewicked · 22/06/2019 16:18

Not quite what you asked but I've run a community group and taught in a school without any of the parents knowing I was married to a woman so I'm not sure how you would know.

No parents that I'm aware of but the head is a mum and lesbian. There's 2 or 3 out teachers as well, but they're young.

Pipandmum · 22/06/2019 16:22

I have no idea but then I generally only know the parents of my kids friends and the women that go to coffee mornings (no reason why men can’t go but they don’t). All are in heterosexual relationships. Now that I think about it I’m the only one who’s single out of the lot!

RuffleCrow · 22/06/2019 16:22

Yes, just one that i'm aware of but that is probably because they're gender non conforming as well as lesbian. Wouldn't have a clue otherwise.

ImNotHappyaboutitPauline · 22/06/2019 16:23

One of dds school friends has two mums, another lives with her mum but regularly sees her dad who lives with his male partner. There are quite possibly more as it's hardly unusual these days but there's no particular reason you'd know is there? I only know because the dc are dds friends so I've met the parents.

elQuintoConyo · 22/06/2019 16:24

I don't know, they obviously don't wear their gay badges around here Hmm

LadyGardens · 22/06/2019 16:24

We are in london. In my kids’ primary I know of three lesbian couples with kids. I am not aware of any male gay couples with kids in the school.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 22/06/2019 16:31

Yes, in a large greater London school.
I have 2dcs at school and 1 in nursery and there is at least one pair of gay parents in each year.

Not sure why others are being sneering about gay badges, it's not a huge deal here but with class WhatsApps, chatting and pickup and dropoff, playdates etc you do tend to find out more about people's domestic setups.

East Midlands, small village on the edge of a big city.

Three/four out of 150 families that I personally know of. I don't know the home situations of most children there.

I was really surprised that in other places it is still seen as unusual. Minority yes, unusual no.

sergeilavrov · 22/06/2019 16:47

My DS attends a small nursery where a good 1/3 of the parents are lgbtq+. Most are male couples. It's a private, secular nursery in an affluent urban area of a Middle Eastern country, so there is a selection bias.

Amibeingdaft81 · 22/06/2019 16:48

There will be
I don’t know any though

Hoppinggreen · 22/06/2019 16:49

We are in Yorkshire and my dd is at a small Private school
No idea if there are other gay parents but one of the girls in DD’s class has 2 mums and a dad. Nobody is very interested and any of the kids trying to take the piss get closed down by the other children very quickly

Amibeingdaft81 · 22/06/2019 16:49

@sergeilavrov.

That’s fascinating
1/3! What Middle Eastern country? I was under the impression that the Middle East wasn’t the most accommodating of anything other than heterosexual relationships

OddBoots · 22/06/2019 16:51

"I was under the impression that the Middle East wasn’t the most accommodating of anything other than heterosexual relationships" That may be why they cluster at particular schools, safety in numbers.

Seniorschoolmum · 22/06/2019 16:53

Yes, one openly lesbian couple, Doesn’t seem to cause an issue at our small rural primary school. Everyone just carries on as normal.

imsuchagrump · 22/06/2019 16:54

What a odd question Hmm why would you ask such a thing ?

Loads. But we are in Brighton.

Amibeingdaft81 · 22/06/2019 16:56

Homosexuality is illegal in 10/18
And oh the remaining 7 - rights are restricted and made to feel very unwelcome
So quite understandably it is not a popular place for homosexuals to live and I can’t imagine many would be keen on raising a family there

So I’m genuinely intrigued

IhaveALooBrush · 22/06/2019 16:57

They don't need badges silly.
A little rainbow floats over their heads wherever they go.

Amibeingdaft81 · 22/06/2019 16:57

Sorry remaining 8

MAXnot73 · 22/06/2019 16:58

I have no idea. I have no idea which ones are straight either Confused

TheBigFatMermaid · 22/06/2019 17:00

I live in ruralish South West of England. DD doesn't go to school, she is home educated, but there are gay couples parenting home educated children among our circle.
