Is it a new thing to "appear" to be sockless with trainers?

Looking around, I see loads of trainers being worn with apparently bare ankles; but if you look more closely, you see the tiniest amount of socks showing.

Like the enigma of the young wearing socks with sliders, when did this become fashionable? I'm sure in the 90s people proudly wore ankle socks with trainers, or when the weather was warm, didn't wear socks at all. When did we start pretending we're not wearing socks? (I'm stuck in my 90s ways, and if it's warm enough to bare my ankles, I don't bother with the socks. Wink )

I think it's fine with cropped trousers or shorts, but looks daft with full length trousers when just a bit of bare ankle shows. But what do I know, I'm ancient.

Jojoanna · 14/06/2019 15:52

I’m ancient and wear trainers with tiny socks !

Jammiebammie · 14/06/2019 15:52

I’m mid 30s and always folded my socks down inside my trainers, even as a teen. I really don’t think it’s a recent thing.
Myself and dds (bar one who is autistic) wear no-show socks with trainers, I would not like to be bare foot in trainers at all - potential to be a sweaty mess!

SoundofSilence · 14/06/2019 15:52

I'm sure I've had trainer liners for at least 15 years. They aren't a new thing.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 14/06/2019 15:52

Training socks have been a thing for well over 10 years.

formerbabe · 14/06/2019 15:52

You can't wear full on socks with trainers! Yes, you are very behind the times...I haven't done this for about two decades.

twattymctwatterson · 14/06/2019 15:52

It's not a new thing no. Unless any time in the past 15 years is new. Socks with trainers looks naff. Only wear non trainer socks with boots now

Apolloanddaphne · 14/06/2019 15:53

I too am ancient and wear trainers with very small socks. I have done for years. It is not new.

TokyoSushi · 14/06/2019 15:53

Where have you been hiding OP?! This has been 'a thing' for years!

SleepingStandingUp · 14/06/2019 15:53

These socks aren't new.

It means when you've got cropped or shorts on you dint have that childhood or old man inch or two of socks showing against bare legs.

Agree if trainers and long jeans say then proper socks look better.

Bare feet in trainers makes them smelly and gross.

EskewedBeef · 14/06/2019 15:54

It's not pretending you're not wearing socks as such. It's wanting bare ankles with trainers, but avoiding the stinky trainers you'd get if you were barefoot.

twattymctwatterson · 14/06/2019 15:54

Btw the 90s were 20 years ago

I wear trainer liners with my trainers because without anything my feet get really sweaty. Only if I'm wearing cropped trousers though.

Better for those of us who are chunky of ankle as well as sweaty of foot.

I get mine in H&M and they are great.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/06/2019 15:55

I hate to see the socks inside my trainers !!!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 14/06/2019 15:55

Yeah I'm in my late 30's and have been wearing short trainer socks for as long as I can remember, they aren't a new thing.

legolimb · 14/06/2019 15:56

Nothing new about trainer socks.
I hate them though and have bare feet in trainers/converse. Unless am running in my actual running trainers then I wear running socks.

SoupDragon · 14/06/2019 15:57

I had trainer socks at school (with a coloured top trim and a small Pom Pom on the back!) and I'm ancient.

TooDamnSarky · 14/06/2019 15:57

Remember the socks with the little bobble at the back? Very 80s.

And yes I only wear teeny socks with trainers (and most other shoes).

DPJ1973 · 14/06/2019 16:00

Another mid thirties person here. Definitely remember wearing tiny sock things with my trainers as a teen, couldn't possibly have socks showing Shock

MrsJBaptiste · 14/06/2019 16:08

I'd never wear ankle socks and trainers whether in jeans or shorts. Secret socks all the way! 😋

FfionFlorist · 14/06/2019 16:12

I remember watching Stefi Graff at Wimbledon in 1984, she wore trainer socks with little pom poms at the heal. I thought she looked so cool and badgered my mum for some. Have worn them ever since.

Sooverthemill · 14/06/2019 16:13

I am 61 and have never ever worn socks with trainers except when wearing them for a gym type activity or in recent years when I discovered socks that do not show and which do not slip down. I think socks showing with trainers looks unattractive. In fact I think most socks are unattractive. I wear them with boots only pretty much. It is however, a personal decision

tisonlymeagain · 14/06/2019 16:17

Been doing it since I was at school in the mid-90s! Trainer socks are not a new invention!

SmellMySmellbow · 14/06/2019 16:19

I'm nearly 40 and I would never have worn visible socks with trainers when my legs are out. Only with full lnegth trousers. Anything shorter and I wear trainer socks. In the 90's before trainer socks were invented I, and all my peers, would fold my ankle socks down. DH still does this! Ankle socks with trainers and bare legs is not flattering and has a leg shortening effect. Wearing trainers with no socks is sweaty and stinky.
