But how do I heat up say, leftovers? Any non microwave users that could give me some tips? Also, jacket potatoes which my children like, will take forever! Thanks

Leftovers heated in the oven/a pan depending on what it is. Jacket potatoes will take much longer; there's no way around this unfortunately. We got rid of our microwave when we moved house and realised we only ever used it for defrosting frozen bread. Such a waste of space. They do have a place though, if you often have jacket potatoes I would be wary of ditching it.

How will you make porridge in the winter without a microwave?

Good point. Someone should invent some kind of a container made of conductive material that would be able to hold food, and then you could apply it to heat. Maybe add a little handle so you could hold it easily? Might be worth fashioning some kind of a lid also?

Would make a killing on Dragon’s Den! Grin

I never use my microwave Dh used to heat up dinners if he was on call but he has a different job so it is kitchen furniture i heat up in a pan or oven, thankfully I don't like porridge I would be stuck Wink

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 07/06/2019 16:01

We don't have a microwave. DP has never had one. I thought he'd have one, so gave mine to my neighbour when we moved in together.

We don't struggle. I don't miss it. We make porridge and things on the hob, we heat leftovers on the hob, I don't tend to make baked potatoes but they're nicer from the oven anyway.

BrokenWing · 07/06/2019 16:02

We rarely use the microwave usually only for Porridge, starting baked potatoes before finishing in oven and to reheat food. I don't mind it being there as is built in so off the worktop out the way.

@VodselForDinner can't see your invention taking off so I'm not investing today. I'm out

NutButterNutter · 07/06/2019 16:03

I haven't had one since it died a couple of years ago. I heat leftovers in the oven or on the job depending on what it is. Jacket potatoes done in the oven are better anyway - fluffier on the inside, actual crisp delicious skin.

Mrsjayy · 07/06/2019 16:04

1 hrish it takes to bake a potato in a fan oven 1 20 in other ovens hardly forever

Well, don’t come running to me when it takes off and makes me millions and you’re left without a small metal container to piss in.

MikeUniformMike · 07/06/2019 16:07

Porridge doesn't need a microwave. Take rolled oats, add boiling water and leave for 5 mins, then eat. Lovely.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 07/06/2019 16:07

I lived without one for 5 or so years and didn’t miss it much at all.

People would look at you like you told them you shit in the woods when you announced you didn’t have one though.

For baked potato I went the lazy route and bought the frozen ones. Half an hour in the oven.

Redtartanshoes · 07/06/2019 16:12

I’ve not had one for years either. I moved it into the garage as an intermediate step and used occasionally for veg when doing a Sunday roast but that was getting less and less frequent. Don’t miss it one bit

Oblomov19 · 07/06/2019 16:14

Interesting. I use mine all the time, every day, for loads of things.

Pinkvoid · 07/06/2019 16:16

I didn’t own a microwave for approx seven years until I moved in with DP and he made a point of buying one, he couldn’t believe I’d survived so long without one! I didn’t really see the need for one tbh. I used to heat leftovers on the stove and I always made porridge on the stove too...

wowfudge · 07/06/2019 16:16

I use ours all the time - heating milk for coffee in the morning, soup at lunchtime, cooking frozen veg for tea, defrosting stuff, etc, etc. It's a huge time saver.

Dp has porridge all year round and never uses a microwave.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 07/06/2019 16:19

Didn’t have one until DD came home from uni. It’s more economical to use than the oven for many things. Plus we like the defrost setting!

AFistfulofDolores1 · 07/06/2019 16:19

I haven't had a microwave for 20 years. I don't miss it at all.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 07/06/2019 16:19

If I need to heat anything up, then I do that on the hob ... sometimes in the oven.

Tighnabruaich · 07/06/2019 16:20

I’ve never had a microwave and I have porridge every morning in winter. How do you think people made it before microwaves were invented? Apart from that I don’t see the need for them.

Beamazing · 07/06/2019 16:21

@vodsel Grin

I don't eat porridge, the kids do but I usually make that in one of those silver things with a handle.......
Damn it!

Beamazing - can I ask why you want to get rid of it, if you are already aware you will miss what it can do ?
