But how do I heat up say, leftovers? Any non microwave users that could give me some tips? Also, jacket potatoes which my children like, will take forever! Thanks

Why do you think microwaving is not cooking food properly?

By the look of this thread, microwaves are like toilet brushes in MN Land.

wibbletooth · 07/06/2019 18:18

Yes I meant not throwing the microwave away. Never occurred to me that anyone would think I meant throwing their life away!

But by the same token - cooking food in a microwave is also cooking it properly. It’s different from cooking on the job or in the oven or on the BBQ etc - but it’s equally as valid and it’s not ‘improperly’ cooked.

And yes there are some things that are nicer not done in a microwave but there are many people who only use if for a fraction of the things it is good for!

I don't own a microwave. Leftovers go in the oven or a pan. Porridge oats get soaked overnight and heated in a pan in the morning. I hardly ever buy ready meals, but they occasionally go in the oven. We eat jacket potatoes occasionally, they go in the oven when I'm baking cakes so less waste; they taste so much better cooked in the oven. I have never missed the microwave. To defrost I leave in the fridge or out overnight or during the day. I never reheat tea or coffee, I like cold coffee.

Vodselfordinner I've thought of a name for your invention...

Porridge Abling Necessity (P.A.N. for short)

And I need my microwave for scrambled eggs. A bowl is easier to clean than a stove top metallic item.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 07/06/2019 19:21

I can’t cook rice on the hob. I’ve tried multiple methods, none work. Nuking the stuff gets me perfect rice every time. My daughter uses it daily to either heat mashed potato or rice as she has that for her lunch most days. I also use it to steam vegetables. It’s also used for whenever anybody wants scrambled eggs, as I refuse point blank to cook them in a pan.

All told, it’s an appliance I’d rather hang onto.

VodselForDinner · 07/06/2019 19:22

@LemonMousse, that’s catchy- I like it!

LemonMousse · 07/06/2019 19:43

I think it could catch on 👍 This time next year everyone will want a PAN Smile

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 07/06/2019 20:30

We did without one for a year and it was mostly ok. But we're not always the most organised at defrosting stuff and DC have hot packed lunches which involves having to heat up stuff in the morning to go in a flask so we caved in and bought one. Would prefer to have the space back though!

cantfindname · 07/06/2019 20:55

I keep mine solely for it's ability to cook the best spinach ever.

Other than that it's used to sit things in to cool down out of the reach of the cat.

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2019 04:17

vodsel lemon re proposed PAN. I wonder if it might be confused with french for bread. May I be so bold as to suggest a word in front like oh ‘sauce’ or ‘frying’ so different kinds could be identified? Might help the new concept be understood more readily too when introduced?

I miss our microwave. Used to use it for bags of veggies, cooking salmon and bacon perfectly in 1-2 minutes (no oil needed) and spuds. Heating up things like baked beans and soup is also much less of a faff.

RiversDisguise · 08/06/2019 04:45

Oh, and I personally think Porridge Optimisation Tool (POT) is snappier. May vary from market to market.

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2019 04:50

rivers i’m now imagining one kitchen could have pots and pans ? Don’t want to tread on inventors toes here though.

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 08/06/2019 04:54

I’ve recently bought a microwave after 15 years or so without one (not enough space in the kitchen). I’m using it more than I thought I would, but porridge is so much nicer done on the hob with one of those P.A.N. things.

I stopped using my microwave after I read an experiment where someone watered plants with microwaved water and compared against plants watered with purified water and the microwave watered plants withered...

Dec2019mumtobe · 08/06/2019 05:14

Oven or pan with a dash of water.

Jacket potatoes, I set an alarm on my phone for an hour before I want them. Then put them in the oven.

I also used to cook four at once and reheat two the next day. Much quicker!

chickenwing... heating can't change the chemical composition of water.

"How will you make porridge in the winter without a microwave? "

We didn't have a microwave for years and cooked porridge on the hob.

My mum makes it in her slow cooker, set on a timer. It makes really good porridge.

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2019 05:22

This taking me back to visiting American relatives in early 70s. They had a microwave and cooked me porridge in it. First and last time ever eaten it without using a PAN. Remember being amazed but also thinking why didn’t they just use a PAN. So much faff and pinging every time door opened to stir it - seemed a bother even in my child-like awe of it all.

PenelopeHolmes · 08/06/2019 05:30

But how will you make your Rustlers burgers?

dreygrey · 08/06/2019 05:45

Porridge is easy and nicer when made on the hob, you absolutely don't need a microwave for it.

[https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/you-asked/will-watering-plants-heated-microwaved-water-kill-them watering plants with microwaved water]]

Porridge for one is easier in a microwave because only a bowl and spoon to wash up.

BertrandRussell · 08/06/2019 05:54

microwave water

BambooB · 08/06/2019 05:54

Dont do it.
