Which dogs smell the most?

I was reading the ‘how to tell if your house smells bad’ thread and the smell of dogs in the house has been mentioned repeatedly. However, lots of owners are saying ‘but not my particular breed of dog^.

Do certain dogs smell more than others? If they were all washed regularly would any breeds still be a bit whiffy?

Disclaimer: I have a dachshund and he definitely has a specific smell. I actually find it quite comforting.

I think it's hairy dogs.

WBWIFE · 15/04/2019 07:35

I think any dogs that dribble a lot.

People who viewed my house when it was for sale was shocked that we had dogs as they didnt smell at all.

We have 2 yorkies and 2 house cats.

My friend had a springer spaniel that reeked. I couldn’t bear to go to her house. I also once looked after a German shepherd and she stank too, especially when her fur got wet.

I do think diet has a lot to do with it. Raw food diets make a big difference. Dogs aren’t meant to eat processed muck.

Our pug is the worst I've ever smelled

LaurieFairyCake · 15/04/2019 07:56

My dog doesn't smell at all because I keep her hair short, she doesn't moult or fart at all and I bath her every week.

All the labs/retrievers/springers I've had stank like fuck. I could smell them when I came home.

No one who visits this house knows I have a dog.

Her feet smell like biscuits Hmm - weird

LittleLongDog · 15/04/2019 07:59

Well I never knew that Bassets were so stinky! But I guess with all their skin folds it makes sense.

I know my dachshunds ears have to be kept clean - But apart from that I totally get the lovely biscuitty smell pp have mentioned.

Apart from when she rolls in something fragrant, my Whippet girl is very clean, barely sheds or smells.

The worst was a relatives old labrador, who dribbled, mounted and stank to high heaven. The sweetest natured old girl, but God she hummed. We pet sat her for a weekend, and the smell really lingered.

My French Bulldog absolutely reeks. He doesn't have hair on his underside and gets sweaty and itchy. It's a constant battle. On the other hand I have a long haired Chihuahua who has no smell at all....it's amazing how two dogs can be so different. In every way.

Newfoundlands! Big, hairy, slobbery things (but big heart of gold 💙) Work with a number of labs, GSDs and golden retrievers and they don’t generally smell but they’re not allowed to swim or roll which makes a huge difference! Friend’s golden is a mud monster and can smell!

I take back my, 'all houses will have a bit of dog smell if you have a dog' thing because my friend had a staffy and her house didn't smell at all. Unless he farted which could have cleared the Albert Hall.

ArtichokeAardvark · 15/04/2019 08:35

Makes a huge difference if the dog has been neutered or not. Spayed bitches and castrated dogs smell a lot less than those 'intacto'.

Dogs originally bred for field sports (labs, spaniels, hounds etc) have waxy water repellent coats that get smelly. Especially if they are like my lab who thinks fox poo is doggy Chanel. And yes, anything with skin folds will smell.

MegaClutterSlut · 15/04/2019 08:39

I have a pomeranian x that I have to bath regularly, not because she smells like dog that much but because she gets cheesy feet and they stink Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2019 08:55

Dachshunds (esp short haired) are definitely one of the better-smelling breeds. Someone once told me that mine is the only dog-owning house she'd ever been in that didn't smell doggy. Biscuit paws and slightly leathery ears.

Dogs don't really sweat, except from their paws and noses (helps keep them moist), that's why they have to pant. If your dog is smelly and itchy he may have some sort of fungal infection - you might want to try Malaseb shampoo (from the vet). Our previous dog had smelly 'armpits' which needed this.
