Which dogs smell the most?

I was reading the ‘how to tell if your house smells bad’ thread and the smell of dogs in the house has been mentioned repeatedly. However, lots of owners are saying ‘but not my particular breed of dog^.

Do certain dogs smell more than others? If they were all washed regularly would any breeds still be a bit whiffy?

Disclaimer: I have a dachshund and he definitely has a specific smell. I actually find it quite comforting.

My terrier x smells like a dirty dishcloth as his hair grows - luckily he is small and easily washed

I like the smell of my staffie x’s feet - sort of wheaty. I am told it can be a sign of a yeast infection, but she’s fine according to the vet. I like her smell generally. When I first got her she had an oily patch near her tail caused by a skin condition which made her smell , but that’s been sorted now

My staff doesn't smell except when she farts which is vile her breath is like a bin but you only smell it when she yawns.
Our English bull stunk though just a generally soggy smell with a rancid bum.
My dad had cocker spaniels and they smelled really bad.

Xpost with pluginwall our staff has wheaty feet too must be a staff thing!

We have a lab but she really doesn't smell but there are other labs we stink that after you've stroked them, your hand stinks! We take ours to hydrotherapy once a fortnight though so that might stop the stink

Is it generally only in the house that these doggy smells are strong?

I love dogs and when out and about if I meet one, I'm not bowled over by unpleasant odour. And I consider my sense of smell quite keen - I'll smell a gas leak in a block of flats before anyone else notices it.

Not had my own dog for years, but I loved the clean, healthy smell of my childhood dog. A warm biscuity smell when you had your face mashed up against her for a cuddle, not an overpowering reek at all.

Unneutered ones.

In my (vast) experience of working with dogs, the worst ones for doggy smells are old golden retrievers!

Also, some illnesses can cause a greasy smell.

My collie doesn't really smell unless he's been swimming or it's raining (we have a waterproof coat to reduce this). He's not bathed at all (just dips in rivers)

@toast the wire hair May smell more but does the shot hair she’d like nobody’s business?

I've known some very stinky spaniels.

My dog stopped smelling when I changed her onto raw food

A few days of being fed kibble and she stinks again...

She used to get a bath every couple of weeks with her bedding washed weekly, but we barely have to since we changed her food

Our cocker spaniel STINKS 😷 she is bathed every one to two weeks and her bedding is washed at the same time. She stinks again not long after. She smells like very bad smelly socks that have been left on washing basket for few weeks! Awful, especially when she trots past wagging her tail. Always cleaning the house and opening the windows as we are very aware of the smell and can't stand it. She also goes to a professional groomer every 3 months.

@Palominoo we have similar taste in hounds Mine also doesn’t smell or get a greasy coat. Rarely needs washing and doesn’t really moult. Very low maintenance

Absent I love that biscuits smell. Our old boy had popcorn scented paws.

I think terriers are stinky when their coats are ready to be stripped but otherwise I don't think they have a very strong smell. It's their bedding and rugs they've laid on that makes a house smell I think. Our regularly bathed (on vets guidance) dog didn't smell but his soft padded bed did. We switched to a basket and two duvets blankets when he got older so they could be changed a couple of times a week. I miss him loads but not the doggy smell. My sense of smell is very keen though.

I have three dogs, the blue dawn brindle whippet, a pug beast (really my daughters but she’s left home!) and a Whippet x Greyhound as seen the photo.

His fur is like velvet, slightly different to the Whippet as it’s a little longer in places but still very short.

If they get wet they dry very quickly!

I have had six basset hounds in my life time and they do stink! They have a particular oil in their coat (common to hounds) which makes them smell pretty malodorous, that said I quite liked it 😁

I have a Sporting Lucas Terrier and she doesn't particularly smell. I am assured that our house doesn't smell doggy

My boss brought her GSDs into work and they absolutely stank!

My sister who us brutally honest says my house never smells if dog, I have a shirt hair mongrel. Sheds like crazy so the place is always covered in white hair but no smell.
