Which dogs smell the most?

I was reading the ‘how to tell if your house smells bad’ thread and the smell of dogs in the house has been mentioned repeatedly. However, lots of owners are saying ‘but not my particular breed of dog^.

Do certain dogs smell more than others? If they were all washed regularly would any breeds still be a bit whiffy?

Disclaimer: I have a dachshund and he definitely has a specific smell. I actually find it quite comforting.

Don't know what happened then 😬

Least stinky dog is a staffie.
Most stinky a pug.

Our house's previous owners had a GSD and we worked out where it used to sleep because of the smell in that particular area. In the end we had to rip up the carpets and start again, even shampooing them weekly wasn't having a long-lasting effect - Enid, I think you are onto something with the idea that the smell sinks into soft furnishings and lingers while the dog itself might be very clean. I have also got off a bus before even though it made me late for work because of the smell emanating from a GSD on it. Although that one didn't look particularly well or well looked-after, which could have a bit to do with it.

Out of friends and family dogs I know well or have owned myself, I would rank them from smelliest to least stinky: Basset Hound, Collie, Poodle, Greyhound, Lab, Dalmatian, Airedale, Coton de Tulear.

The collies we had that loved to roll in shit and dead animals 🤢 my staffy doesnt smell unless he hasnt had a bath in a while or is wet from the rain.

CakeNinja · 14/04/2019 21:56

All of them!
I agree, I think non doggy people will notice it more than doggy people.
I can always smell a dog in a house, some more than others. Not always enough to make me gag but sometimes it is!
I know someone who has a long haired dog which they never brush and have never washed or had his coat trimmed etc. I can’t go to their house any more as I leave and can smell dog in my hair/clothes/coat/bag for days even after washing and washing.
However, I wouldn’t say all dogs of the same breed carry such a stench, it’s just that the owners don’t clean and air their house or groom their dog at all.
I have another friend who has 3 smallish dogs but her house is kept tidy and clean (she must spend all her spare time cleaning and washing dog beds and whatnot), back doors are always open and she gets the dogs washed regularly. I can smell dog in her house but not in a deeply unpleasant way, just a bit of a “because I don’t like dogs, I can smell them and I hate the smell of them!” Kind or way Grin tolerable but still not nice!

My 4 poodles always smell of strawberries & candy floss. Even their farts do Smile.

drinkswineoutofamug · 14/04/2019 22:07

@Razzles her dna test came back as Belgian Malinois X whippet with a splatter of greyhound and staffie ( great grandparents) . She's beautiful

longearedbat · 14/04/2019 22:11

I have a poodle and she seems odourless to me. She goes to the groomers every six weeks and might have an additional wash in between. Her feet smell lovely, like popcorn.

FleurNancy · 14/04/2019 22:14

Our female cocker doesn't smell but our male beagle definitely does.

EnidButton · 14/04/2019 22:17

Goto Good to know thank you. I've read they don't smell much at all. Gorgeous dogs!

EnidButton · 14/04/2019 22:21

36 yes I think they all smell a bit. Even if it's just their dog food breath Grin So a house that's home to a dog is bound to have a smell but I think it can be reduced greatly through cleaning, grooming the dog and airing daily. Like Cake says, the smell will still be there but nothing bad. (And I Love dogs.)

Pugs

ReginaGeorgeous · 14/04/2019 22:23

My in laws have a golden retriever and it stinks to high heaven.

Gertie75 · 14/04/2019 22:25

I've worked with dogs for 24 years and would say the smelliest are cocker spaniels and shih tzu's, the moisture collects in the folds around their lips and the creases under their eyes and does get pongy.

I do agree the owners get used to it though, I've always owned dogs and can't smell them in the house but when we go on holiday then get back home I can smell them.

FrangipaniBlue · 14/04/2019 22:41

On the basis of his farts alone my English Bull Terrier! Some days I come home from work and the smell hits me when I open the door Envy

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/04/2019 22:44

My ex mils dog stank. Cocker spaniel.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/04/2019 22:45

My staffie only stank when he farted but dear god that would have emptied a football stadium..

onelittleclara · 14/04/2019 23:36

Bassets. Drool, stink like hell's butthole and like rolling in fox poo. I love my dog but do feel rather reluctant to have visitors.

crazycatgal · 14/04/2019 23:43

My friend has a Cavalier King Charles that stinks Envy

Sarcelle · 15/04/2019 00:00

My MIL had a Shizt Thu (I know that is spelt wrong!), it did not smell. She was very houseproud so there was no way she was going to allow a smell. On holiday in Cornwall last year somebody came along with two huge mastiff type dogs. They absolutely reeked even though I was not standing near them. I overheard other people commenting. Dread to think of what their home smells like. Seriously pungent.

toastfiend · 15/04/2019 05:55

@ridingthegravytrain yes! She also thinks she's a lapdog so likes to sit on my lap and cover me in dog hair and takes great pleasure in rolling around on the cream carpets so that I have to hoover approximately 11 million times a day.

MardAsSnails · 15/04/2019 06:05

Labs stink.

My greyhound experience is that they have no smell at all, but that may be because he’s always next to the stinkbomb lab.

And Dalmatian farts are horrific.

longwayoff · 15/04/2019 07:06

Have a Jack Pug. Pongy with breath that could strip paint, however, is a gentle soul with a nice nature so we excuse him.
