What car should I buy?

I have always had boring cars and I want something a bit nicer. I currently drive a Suzuki Swift which I love but it's steady and old like me.
I want something with a bit of go in it. A hatchback, not too big, 5 doors, 1.6 to 2.0l engine, petrol. Budget is around £10k cash but could go a bit higher.

Any ideas?

Do you actually need a car? Could you walk, use public transport and sometimes a taxi?

colehawlins · 05/04/2019 18:55

There's some kind of special MN prize for you, I think @ForalltheSaints

Maybe even platinum if you suggest magic chickens and taking in ironing too.

ForalltheSaints · 05/04/2019 18:58

I live in a household without a car. In large cities or if you walk to work it is possible.

colehawlins · 05/04/2019 19:00

I'd go Mitsubishi or
Volkswagen @HoozNext

Mirage or a Golf?

Bully for you, but OP clearly wants a car. That's why she's asking for car suggestions. See?

SandunesAndRainclouds · 05/04/2019 19:05

I currently drive a massive van-car thing for all the DCs to fit in. I’d love to have a zingy little Citroen DS3! Children would have to be in the boot and tied to the roof though....

HoozNext · 05/04/2019 19:05

I live in a remote village with no public transport and no shops. I could do without a car if I moved house but that would stretch the budget a bit more.

What sort of age car do you want for your budget

HoozNext · 05/04/2019 19:08

DC grown up but DH has a big car for uni drop offs. I want small and zingy sandunes but I don't know much about cars. I don't like Golfs but will have a look at the Mitsubishi and Citroen.

How about a mini

StillNotMe · 05/04/2019 19:15

BMW 1
Mazda 3
Jaguar XF

HoozNext · 05/04/2019 19:16

Never thought about a mini, I passed my test in a mini
in 1977 Grin.

A mini...so fun to drive. Mine is a basic one but has a 1.6 engine and it is so nippy. You do get 5 door ones though and a used one would be within your budget. Minis have a good resale value too.

Probably the twattiest post I've seen in a long time! That's like going into Tesco to buy some biscuits and the cashier telling you that you need to diet!

SosigisAndCornflourSauce · 05/04/2019 19:19

How about a Mazda CX-3, I love mine

RedRiverShore · 05/04/2019 19:19

Those Citroen DS3s that Sandunes mentioned are very sporty cars, my friend had one

WBWIFE · 05/04/2019 19:19

I love our Suzuki vitara a bigger car but not too big and surprisingly fits in every gap!

RedRiverShore · 05/04/2019 19:20

Yes Mini or Citreon DS3

WBWIFE · 05/04/2019 19:21

Thats coming from someone who used to drive a smart car!

WhoTFIsAlanBrazil · 05/04/2019 19:22

Mercedes A class? We just sold ours, 3 years old, £11,000ish. It was a brilliant car!!

SherlockHolmes · 05/04/2019 19:22

How about a Golf? I've got an estate version, but I love it. It's nippy, despite it's size and feels lovely and solid and the seats are lovely.

(totally misses the point about wanting something sexy not sensible)

PurpleDaisies · 05/04/2019 19:22

Small and zingy-ecoboost fiesta. You won’t need a 1.6 l engine. Mine’s a 1l turbo abc it flies.

Sforsh49 · 05/04/2019 19:23

Mini Cooper. Little go cart. I cried when circumstances dictated I had to swop mine. As my brother drove it up the road I nearly ran after it shouting "don't leave me Mickey!" (Yes, he had a name, he was Mickey the Mini!)

blaaake · 05/04/2019 19:27

I second the bmw 1 series. DH had one a few years ago and I loved driving it, rear wheel drive and very fast and fun!
