Does anyone else feel embarrassed buying.....

Condoms? I know it's silly, I'm a grown up with a child but still I feel embarrassed.
Called to the supermarket this morning for a few things, Dp reminded me needed some. Thought fine I don't need much will do to self serve save my embarrassment. Picked up a bottle of wine so of course they have to authorise it and the guy wanted to check id. Fair enough but he looks in the bag I've already packed and all I've got in there is condoms and squirty cream (not for that, I just really fancied a hot chocolate with cream).

I'm sure he was smirking and then I got flustered because I couldn't get my drivers licence out of my purse and I could feel myself blushing Blush

I got home and told Dp I'm not buying them anymore, he thinks it's hilarious but suspiciously always seems to forget to pick them up himself.

No, but you were brave to chose such a selection Grin

I sincerely hope none of my kids will ever be embarrassed to buy condoms, tampax or pregnancy test!

Actually, I went to Boots once to get some pregnancy tests for a friend - who was too embarrassed. Of course, I met a couple of gossips I knew so I could picture the rumours starting Hmm

GirlOnIt · 26/01/2019 16:02

I never even thought about the combination until I went to start scanning and I did think they don't look great together. I just wanted a hot chocolate with cream though.

Dp, trying to make me feel better reminded me he once bought a box of twenty beers and two boxes of condoms and that was all!

Thats what Sainsburys, or Boots, deliveries are for..might avoid the squirty cream though, lol...

Crunchymum · 26/01/2019 16:09

My recent deliveries have all been without bags (despite me specifying with bags). Last 3 items I was handed today were condoms, KY Jelly and cheap plonk. Together they look Blush but the plonk was for cooking and the KY Jelly was for the baby who is tube fed (when you insert a new tube, you need a dab of KY Jelly so it slides down the nasal passage / throat more easily).... the condoms were for their intended use though Grin Grin

Tampons, pregnancy tests never bothered me! Don't know why condoms make me feel so flustered. If I'm getting them with the shopping, I walk up and down deciding which cashier I'm not as embarrassed about going to. And I feel better if I've got Ds for some reason.

Never bought lube, but I imagine I'd feel the same about that.

Whilst I was temping a few years ago I worked in Sainsbury's on Friday and Saturday evenings, usually on express check out - a surprising number of youngish men with a bottle of wine, box of chocs and condoms - no doubt what they were planning

Highfever · 26/01/2019 16:17

LeSquigh exactly.

EngagedAgain · 26/01/2019 16:17

Think your mistake was getting the wine so you got checked out! Also be aware of the other type of self service as sometime you get a bag check. I, whilst buying san pro in the past have often hid them under things or bags in case I bump into someone I know! Next it'll be the bloody tena lady!

lolaflores · 26/01/2019 16:18

For the 1st time ever I had to buy lube and I wanted the ground to open up.
I brazened it out but inside I was mortifidd

GirlOnIt · 26/01/2019 16:20

I'm definitely sending Dp in the future then Ted. I might get wine and chocolates too.

Although we've got 24 now (on offer) and with a three month old Ds, they'll probably last us a while.

Also think of the other funny combo's like just a pack of latex gloves, lube and a cucumber! Actually I think where I shop the condoms are in those security cases.

JustanotherCHRISTMASuser01 · 26/01/2019 16:23

through a self service no but i dont like buying that sort of thing on a manned till where they have to physically pick it up and look for the barcode!

spinabifidamom · 26/01/2019 16:25

I was in town today. I picked up some medication from the pharmacy and when we had finished, I thought I could feel people staring at me as I paid for it.

EngagedAgain · 26/01/2019 16:26

Good luck with that OP!

theworldistoosmall · 26/01/2019 16:27

54 for £16, that's steep. I get 100 for around £17 order them online from Ebay or Amazon. For that I get different brands, sizes and some flavoured ones.

When I do get close to running out and have to buy from the shop I don't care. Even when the basket has only included condoms, wine, cream and chocolate spread lol.

Do remember years ago shocking the chemist when I bought condoms (for me) tampax (dd) and a pregnancy test (friend). They did make a silly comment, I brazened it out and said well, the period is a bit late, in the meantime, the test will confirm and if I will need the condoms and tampax Grin

I don't find anything embarrassing about it. I don't see buying condoms, tampax or lube any different to buying toilet roll.

GirlOnIt · 26/01/2019 16:33

Two boxes of 12 for £16! I've been well ripped off then Shock

I've had to buy them between hormonal contraceptive methods and feel like I'm a teenager again. I also think they think that I'm probably sleeping around (not with a long term partner). I cringed when buying baby formula for a fairly new baby, big pants to go over what still looked like a bump, wine, lube and condoms. No squirty cream, but I did get stopped at the door because something beeped. Ffs. Literally ran home I was so mortified.

Ozziewozzie · 26/01/2019 16:35

When I was a teen, I'd lob a load in my mothers shopping trolley. She's v catholic, prude, has six kids and never touched a condom in her life. I would find it so amusing watching her panic at the check out.
That'll teach her for sending me to a convent school Grin

ChesterGreySideboard · 26/01/2019 16:35

For all those recommending that people get them for free from the doctor or elsewhere, they are not free, they are being paid for by the taxpayer and the massively underfunded NHS.

I quite agree.

Bumblebee39 · 26/01/2019 16:39

To be fair condoms may never be "free" but still better to get them off the NHS than not get them

The MAP, an emergency coil or an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy cost the tax payer considerably more than a few condoms.

The cost of HIV/AIDs treatment doesn't bare thinking about

Kids ain't cheap either! Especially if you can't afford another one!

Stay safe Wink

Whyareyouallabunchof · 26/01/2019 16:39

I used to work in a supermarket and a young couple came in and bought only 2 items...

A cucumber and a bottle of lube Grin

ChesterGreySideboard · 26/01/2019 16:40

Oh I agree that they should be free to people on low incomes etc but if you can afford them they don’t get them on the nhs just because you can.

theworldistoosmall · 26/01/2019 16:50

Yea you have really been ripped off. Online is great (well apart from supermarkets lol) as they come in the post discreetly.

Can I also remind people to be careful using condoms? They should go down to the balls (some really think a half covered shaft is acceptable) and avoid oils including lipsticks as oil really messes with the condom.

BlancheM · 26/01/2019 16:51

I was hoping this would be about loo roll. Still just me then 😂

Mrsfrumble · 26/01/2019 16:51

The only time I’ve ever been embarrassed is when I was buying them during my lunch break one Friday, and my work colleague appeared behind me in the queue and started chatting away. There was a 2-for-1 offer on the big boxes of Durex, so I was stocking up. Colleague glances into my basket, sees 48 condoms and a pack of prawn sandwiches and looks a bit surprised. I blurted out “well it is a Bank Holiday weekend!”, as if that would ease anyone’s embarrassment. Poor bloke avoided eye contact with me for some time after that.8
