Does anyone else feel embarrassed buying.....

Condoms? I know it's silly, I'm a grown up with a child but still I feel embarrassed.
Called to the supermarket this morning for a few things, Dp reminded me needed some. Thought fine I don't need much will do to self serve save my embarrassment. Picked up a bottle of wine so of course they have to authorise it and the guy wanted to check id. Fair enough but he looks in the bag I've already packed and all I've got in there is condoms and squirty cream (not for that, I just really fancied a hot chocolate with cream).

I'm sure he was smirking and then I got flustered because I couldn't get my drivers licence out of my purse and I could feel myself blushing Blush

I got home and told Dp I'm not buying them anymore, he thinks it's hilarious but suspiciously always seems to forget to pick them up himself.

I used to work in a supermarket and a young couple came in and bought only 2 items...

A cucumber and a bottle of lube

Probably a dare - DP and I have often suggested a game of “buy the most inappropriate assortment of items from the supermarket” and giggled about what they might be. Obvs cucumber is always on the list, along with a rolling pin, some duct tape etc but we’ve never actually taken it out of the house.

DH went through a long period of not daring to buy any condoms at our local Tesco Express. There were only three tills, and they were always manned by Carole (who was also our Avon lady); Harry-with-the-eyepatch (who was a member of a rather old-fashioned religion, and DH feared he might disapprove); and a lovely mumsy older lady called Pam who'd always ask him loudly how his wife and two little DDs were.

DH couldn't bear the idea that dear old Pam might realise he and I actually had sex now and again...although I'm pretty sure she'd have known that was how both DDs had come about! Grin

I once served a young man with wine, flowers and condoms. I couldn’t decide if he was living in hope or on a promise 😀

Hoppinggreen · 26/01/2019 17:50

I once bought Tampons, chocolate, a hot water bottle and painkillers.
Bloke on checkout didn’t say anything but the lady in the Q behind me said “ oh dear, hope you feel better soon love”

GummyGoddess · 26/01/2019 17:53

Best way to get over the embarrassment, buy condoms and only condoms. After having to do that at centerparcs, the condoms on their own between the checkout dividers, families everywhere and the coward of a dh waiting outside, I'm not embarrassed.

80sMum · 26/01/2019 17:56

Hahaha! Condoms, wine and squirty cream was an unfortunate combination for the avoidance of embarrassment, OP! Grin

Starlight90 · 26/01/2019 18:09

Ive NEVER bought condoms. Nor been to get them free.

Anyone else?

TBH id also feel a bit 😳 going.

PigletJohn · 26/01/2019 18:18

You should have bought a larger assortment of shopping so they wouldn't notice

Bottle shiraz
2 fillet steaks
oven chips
Rocky road ice cream
can squirty cream
kitchen roll
massage oil
washing line
6 raspberry condoms
mouthwash
thermos flask
espresso coffee
Paracetamol
earplugs

dementedma · 26/01/2019 18:21

i've reached the ripe old age of 55 without ever having bought a pack of condoms in my life! I feel quite deprived now.

Ribbonsonabox · 26/01/2019 18:22

Oh God once I set the alarms off on my way out of boots. To make matters worse it turned out this guy I knew was working as a security guard there. I had amongst other things two boxes of condoms in my bag. He took everything individually out of my bag to look it over for security tags and wave it across the barrier thing. So hes just waving these boxes of condoms about and everyone was staring. In the end he couldn't find what was setting the alarms off so he just let me go...

Bringonspring · 26/01/2019 18:23

I totally get embrassef

Ifangyow · 26/01/2019 18:39

No, I never got embarrassed. I used to buy them for my kids too with the weekly shop ( when they were 16 plus )

poundoflard · 26/01/2019 18:52

My Dh went to get some, he got wine and choc too only to find the kids TA and good friend behind him in the queue. He was so embarrassed.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 26/01/2019 19:09

When my partner and I first got together he was worried about the bags under his eyes because he “wanted me to fancy him”. I told him not to be daft but he wanted to buy something for it before we next saw each other and he heard that haemorrhoid cream could reduce eye bags.

I had also asked him to pick up some lube to make things a little more comfortable for us (me) in the bedroom.

Off he went to the supermarket where his list consisted of: condoms, lube, a cucumber (for his eyes) a bottle of wine and some haemorrhoid cream Blush

He didn’t use the self checkout either!

cheeseislife8 · 26/01/2019 19:16

Last time I bought them it was in a massive shop so I hid them under everything else Blush DH refuses to buy them in case people "think things" in his words

longtompot · 26/01/2019 19:18

It doesn't bother me buying them but my dh won't buy them at all. Makes me laugh and drives me bonkers in equal measure.

PoesyCherish · 26/01/2019 19:20

That's a combination there @PerfectionistProcrastinator Grin

I do feel a tad embarrassed. I once bought a pregnancy test and a pack of condoms (in the hope that said p test was negative). That was quite embarrassing as I felt they probably thought it was too late for the condoms.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 26/01/2019 19:26

A few years ago I was at the supermarket, unloading my shopping onto the belt. Looked up and saw my (new) boss in front of me. I said hello and we exchanged a few pleasantries. He seemed a little distracted and slightly uncomfortable. Then I looked at his purchases... Tampons, sanitary towels and a bottle of wine. When he saw I'd spotted them he looked so embarrassed and mumbled something about his wife. Clearly I didn't care at all, but I've rarely seen anyone look as uncomfortable as him in those few minutes.

ChesterGreySideboard · 26/01/2019 19:40

I seem to remember an advert in the 80s saying not to be embarrassed because the lass at the checkout really doesn’t care.

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2019 19:43

Not since I was about 19!

I once only bought pg test and nappies in my lunch break. The lady in the toll sighed “oh dear” Shock

user1471505356 · 26/01/2019 19:49

Was in a chemist and ask the assistant where they were, she was very helpful until she asked what size, with a smirk.I think she meant a dozen or a single,

smurfy2015 · 26/01/2019 19:50

Back in 2007, my brother's young children at the time were visiting with him and the youngest decided it would be good fun to go into my bedroom and pull things out of my bottom drawer of the chest of drawers. (the 3 youngest were 8, 5 and 18m), I saw his arm disappear deep into the back of the drawer and bingo!

His wee arm pulled out 2 massive ziplock bags of condoms, dental dams, in all colours my stomach lurched as he tipped the colourful bags over his head.

My brother gave me side eye but said nothing, so kids started asking questions where I explained as well as possible with age-appropriate language OR so I thought.

Im going to explain here that large bags were spares from when I was doing a sexual health promotion programme about 2 months before, now let me say if you are going to show others how to put on a condom correctly, practice beforehand. Also, the bag held loads, which was for free samples, same with the dental dams.

The kids were very quiet on the way home, the 8 and 5-year-old didn't say a lot and 18m slept all the way home and straight to bed. The next day at school, the teacher asked 5yr old what did she do at the weekend? innocent question,

The reply - We had to go to my aunties to help her with her condoms as she is doing sex work for the first time this week.Blush
Blush Blush

My brother was doing pick up and had to explain to the teacher that I was giving my first workshop on sex education

Bluelonerose · 26/01/2019 19:50

I remember one young lad (16ish) came into the small corner shop where I worked.
He picked up some reduced cakes and condoms.

We thought he was on to a cracking night Grin

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/01/2019 19:59

Unfortunately I work in a secondary school that is very local to me, so I’m always seeing pupils in the park, doctors, supermarket and chemist etc. It can get very embarrassing.

theworldistoosmall · 26/01/2019 20:01

user1471505356 - condoms come in different sizes, - xxs to something like xxxxl

Was looking at books on amazon the other week. Shame I cannot read Japanese (still tempted though and use translate) www.amazon.co.uk/Condom-Cooking-Recipe-Japanese-opanpon-ebook/dp/B00NP1O0PM/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Condom+Cooking+Recipe&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1548532827&sr=8-1
