I inherited a ring. How can I tell what the stone is?

It was my grandmother's - she'll have got engaged 1940s I think but I've no idea whether it's as old as that or whether she replaced her original.

I think it's cubic or glass but it glowed blue under uv lights today when I got my nails done and heard that might mean it's real?

It's hugely sentimental so I'm only bothered in case I need to insure it. Would glass still be very shiny after all these years?

@LadyFlumpalot, it's a tiara ring, you're technically wearing it upside down, but having said that I prefer it your way!!

After my mum died last year I inherited some of her rings. When getting them resized I was told the one I thought was paste is actually real diamonds. I wear her replacement engagement ring (original was stolen in a burglary) in place of mine which is having its emerald replaced and, the clustering is having its 18c claws replaced as a couple broke so the centre stone shifted.

Once they are repaired I’ll be asking the jewellers for valuations for them all. These are the 3 rings!!

@alphajuliet123! I thought I was wearing it wrong! The ruby sits proud of my finger and catches if I wear it "correctly". It's very pretty and delicate in real life!

It's gorgeous and I do prefer the way you wear it!

@rememberball - I adore your last one! The emerald with the three stones either side. It's stunning! Drop me a line if you ever want to sell it! 😉

Hi @celticecho, thank you so much. DH and I saw it many months before we bought it - we said we wouldn’t ever buy it till he had got his decree nisi through (at that point he’d not even applied for his divorce!) then my dad died and he decided to buy it for me the next month to cheer me up and give me something good to look forward to. Cost us a week of his wages as an IT contractor and I do love it!!

I lost my mum in 2017 and I wearing her engagement ring. She always told me it was a Sapphire and diamonds around it. Absolutely no idea and I don't care if it real or not. It's a huge part of her life I'm lucky to have.

The other two are my Granny's wedding ring (thin band) she got married during ww2, died 2006, and my Nana's eternity ring above it. The eternity ring had a beautiful pattern which has sadly worn away. She died on 1983, my mum so so kindly gave the ring to about 1990.
