I inherited a ring. How can I tell what the stone is?

It was my grandmother's - she'll have got engaged 1940s I think but I've no idea whether it's as old as that or whether she replaced her original.

I think it's cubic or glass but it glowed blue under uv lights today when I got my nails done and heard that might mean it's real?

It's hugely sentimental so I'm only bothered in case I need to insure it. Would glass still be very shiny after all these years?

LadyFlumpalot I think it looks a bit like a butterfly or dragonfly the way you wear it. But turned upside down I can see it looks like a tiara. It's very pretty.

wombatsears · 21/01/2019 17:16

Come on OP! Maybe your dad has run off with it Grin

CormoranStrike · 21/01/2019 17:22

Hope you get good news.

Oh I'm shameless in my placemarking. The hallmarks bode well for it being a real stone, but it's a lovely ring regardless Grin

ScienceIsTruth · 21/01/2019 17:29

Whatever it is, it looks beautiful on your finger, and it obviously holds really special memories for you.
It's a really pretty style and cut. Smile

PlaymobilPirate · 21/01/2019 17:37

It's real! He didn't get it valued but the jeweller said it definitely is. I'm off to see dad and get it back now x

Lovely :) who would have thought a manicure would result in this?!

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 21/01/2019 17:45

Why didn't he just get it valued at the same time for your insurance? Surely would save another trip to the jewellers?

gallicgirl · 21/01/2019 17:46

That's fantastic news. I'd be excited to know the value.

Diamonds started to be cut in a different way around 1935-40 so that immediately ages some stones.

I have an engagement ring from that era but it's not that large! It's 18ct gold, platinum shoulders and about .3 of a carat I think. I love that it's probably unique and I only wish I knew its history.

I'm not sure how much they charge for valuation Rain but he wanted to check with me first

So many beautiful rings!

Almostfifty · 21/01/2019 18:10

As it's real, get it valued as you may have to have it written on your insurance.

These rings are all beautiful, the butterfly is just gorgeous.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 21/01/2019 18:17

Very lovely

mrsjackrussell · 21/01/2019 18:39

That is so beautiful @LadyFlumpalot

RedPandaMama · 21/01/2019 18:47

Aww I enjoyed this thread so much! Brilliant news OP.

TheSassyAssassin · 21/01/2019 18:56

How exciting! Def get it valued and the setting checked too OP. I thought it was a butterfly too LadyF, it's beautiful Smile

PlaymobilPirate · 21/01/2019 18:58

Thanks everyone. Weirdly it's not changed how I feel about it. I really missed wearing it today and, although it's back on my finger I'm not fretting about it. I'd be just as devastated to lose it whether glass or diamond.

I'll look into a proper valuation asap . Thanks everyone!

LadyFlumpalot would you mind me asking where your ring is from please? It's absolutely beautiful

planespotting · 21/01/2019 19:08

How exciting!!!
The ring is so beautiful OP Smile

LadyFlumpalot · 21/01/2019 19:19

Sorry for the slight hijack OP! I'm glad your ring is real, a lovely surprise for you !

@Justonedayatatime11 - it's from a South West chain called Allum and Sidaway - the sales lady told us it was a one off though and I'm afraid I don't know what brand it was from out of the ones they carry.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 21/01/2019 19:22

I'm loving these "square" rings.

Good news OP!

Chinnychinnychinnychib · 21/01/2019 19:28

This is my Grandma’s ring. I was told all my life by my Mum that it was glass. Then when I was in the jewellers growing my engagement ring cleaned, he remarked on what a good diamond it was. I was somewhat astonished when he valued it!!!

That's a gorgeous ring too, Chinnychinnychinnychib.
