I inherited a ring. How can I tell what the stone is?

It was my grandmother's - she'll have got engaged 1940s I think but I've no idea whether it's as old as that or whether she replaced her original.

I think it's cubic or glass but it glowed blue under uv lights today when I got my nails done and heard that might mean it's real?

It's hugely sentimental so I'm only bothered in case I need to insure it. Would glass still be very shiny after all these years?

Beautiful ring op!! Have you been to the jewellers?

MotorcycleMayhem · 20/01/2019 19:08

A pawn shop will be able to identify the stone and would give you their price for it OP, not just an independent jewellers.

Hi - I've not been yet, no. I might ask my Mum to take it for me this week. I'm at work all week!

If it fluoresces blue under UV it is definitely not a spinel/paste/zircon/white sapphire.

Not all minerals fluoresce and those that do, fluoresce specific colours.

This is my great-great-great grandmother's engagement ring (around 1880). I have absolutely no idea if it is worth anything but it has a lot of sentimental value. It was given to my gg grandmother when my ggg grandmother died and it has passed down the women in my family on our 18th birthdays.

I don't especially care if it is worth anything. It has been my good luck charm - I wore it to each and every exam in uni, I wore it on my wedding day and to every special event since then. I hate to think of passing it to DD in 7 years. 😢

@RagingWhoreBag - I think the OP's ring is gorgeous, but yours is the most beautiful ring I've seen and I've just been scrolling through the recent engagement ring thread. I don't know if it's a real diamond or not, but I can't imagine any jewellery maker taking that much care about such an intricate setting if it weren't. I have serious ring envy here Grin

PlaymobilPirate · 21/01/2019 08:02

That's beautiful Annie! My dad is going to try to take it to a jewellers today for me.

Aw thanks Blush blushing! I have to say, i never rated it, as I’m usually a plain and simple gal, so always found it a bit too flouncy for my taste. I thought the square setting was just a way to try and make the stone look bigger, which is why I thought it wouldn’t be worth much!

However, as I’ve grown up I’ve started to appreciate the beauty of it and realised that the main stone is really quite a chunk! I now love to look at it and feel like I finally deserve to wear it Smile

The jeweller I took it to for resizing was also really enamoured with it, which is a good sign!

RagingWhoreBag · 21/01/2019 09:21

Hope you get the news you’re after Playmobil! But as we’ve shown on here, whether or not it’s ‘real’ it’s beautiful so enjoy it!

Gth1234 · 21/01/2019 11:44

@annieonamapleleaf

well it looks like a sapphire with diamonds around it. I can't believe they could make fake stones in those days, as well as they can today (CZ hasn't been around that long) so I expect most old engagement rings are almost bound to be real gems.

Kittykat93 · 21/01/2019 12:50

Beautiful ring, I too think it's a diamond.

IShitGlitter · 21/01/2019 12:56

Beautiful ring OP

annieonamapleleaf · 21/01/2019 13:55

Absolutely gorgeous ring, OP. Can't wait to hear what the jeweller says. 🤞

mrsjackrussell · 21/01/2019 14:43

It's a beautiful ring op. Hurry up and let us know. My Nan left me her engagement ring and Iv been told it's real. Iv been worried about wearing it in the past in case I lose it but I wear it all the time now. I feel like she's with me when I wear it. It was old when she bought it probably in the 1930s so I would love to know the history. Looks a bit Art Deco.

Oooo love this thread!

LadyFlumpalot · 21/01/2019 15:13

DH bought me this ring recently, apart from my engagement ring it's the first "valuable" ring I've owned. It's ruby, diamond and rose gold. I plan to leave it to my DD and hope it will go down the female line fo my family. Maybe one day a future great granddaughter will be wondering if the stones are real or not? That's quite a nice thought!

That's probably one of the prettiest and most unusual rings I've ever seen @LadyFlumpalot !! 😍😍😍😍

Borntobeamum · 21/01/2019 15:22

This was my Mother in laws ring that she was bought in Celebration of their Ruby wedding anniversary. My engagement ring was stolen in a burglary so I'm more than happy to wear this one

LadyFlumpalot · 21/01/2019 15:31

Thank you @WatchingFromTheWings! DH was originally going to get me an eternity ring but he spotted this tiara ring instead. He figured you can get an eternity ring at any jewellers at any time but he'd never seen one like that one before. I think I'm wearing it upside down TBH, but I prefer it pointing down.

IrregularCommentary · 21/01/2019 15:34

Bit late to the party, but I'd say real diamond too. Looks like the stone is set in platinum on the gold band to me, and that says diamond.

WeCameToDance · 21/01/2019 15:34

@LadyFlumpalot that ring is absolutely beautiful! My dh needs to take some tips from yours Grin

Floandme · 21/01/2019 15:42

Come on OP its the school run soon

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 21/01/2019 15:49

Hi Op, I agree to try your best and go to an independent jewellers. But also, high street jewellers won't try and identify in store anyway. It'll be sent away to be checked for it's value and hallmark, at a small cost, and will be sent back with a stamped certificate with all the information.

Gth1234 · 21/01/2019 16:07

@borntobeamum.

That really is a very pretty ring.
