Kitchen gadgets that never get used

I was tidying out my kitchen cupboards on Sunday and found this (hope the picture is attached!) for making coconut pyramids. My mum bought it years ago, god knows how many given that Lakeland dropped the plastics part of their name 22 years ago! She never opened it. I then took it and I’ve never opened it! It sits in the cupboard waiting for the day that I need to make coconut pyramids...

Has anyone else got any “must have” kitchen gadgets that have never been used but are still sat waiting for that just in case moment?

Some of the forks and knives have probably sat in the cutlery draw and never been used. The spare tin opener likewise. Some of the mugs and glasses too.

Halogen oven is my biggest white elephant. I've not used it once.

Love the slow cooker and it does get used regularly but normally at weekends (which probably defeats the original purpose of it.) We make a big batch of something in it and freeze half for quick midweek meals.

Ice cream maker with a bowl that needs freezing first obviously doesn't get used because there's not that much space in the freezer. Inherited a Gaggia one that does its own freezing but it's so huge there isn't even room for it in the kitchen cupboards so it's in the garage and therefore out of sight and out of mind and never gets used.

My DD swears by her Instant pot. She does so much in it but just think it'll be another stuck on the side gadget I won't use. I think I'm too set in my ways

Karcher window washer/vac - dh bought one a month ago without consulting me, but then went round cleaning all the insides of the windows - which did really need it - shortly before Christmas.
So I can't agree on that one.

All I need now is similar boy-toy gadgets for washing the kitchen floor, cleaning bathrooms and oven.

Nespresso and nuitribullet. Bought on a whim must sell at some point

Roussette · 03/01/2019 15:43

I use my nespresso machine ALL the time. I'm on my second and the first didn't even really break, it was just a lot bigger than the ones they sell now so I've got a dinky little one!

MeetOnTheledge · 03/01/2019 17:05

We used to use the Nespresso all the time, then we got an Aeropress to take camping and the Nespresso has been gathering dust ever since.

I used my bread maker about twice but kept it for years. God knows why! I have a pasta maker but bought it for craft purposes (it’s great for rolling out thin Fimo / craft clay). Stick blonder is great, ditto my slow cooker (though H has ruined it through overfilling) and food processor.

A quick squint at wiki tells me spiralizers started becoming popular in 2014, I have a'pencil sharpener' style one thankfully very cheap which I have probably used once. I also have a few things I rarely use but not so rarely I want to get rid of them completely such as the jam maker and the passata maker (I do grow tomatoes so it's used annually).

theSnuffster · 03/01/2019 17:57

We're terrible for this! Or rather my OH is. Bread maker- only used it a handful of times. One of those bullet chopper blender things- OH has used it a few times, I don't think I've ever used it. Soda stream. Slush puppie machine. Ice cream maker. Panini press. Toasty maker. OH even has a gadget that peels and cores apples?! All get used very occasionally.

I do use my food processor and stand mixer. And we use the coffee machine loads but that's because we've only had it for a few days, there's every chance we'll lose interest!

Blibbyblobby · 03/01/2019 21:20

I use my spiraliser for super lazy packed lunches. It's a pencil sharpener style one. I take in half a courgette, the spiraliser and a jar of pesto, then at lunch spiralise the courgette, bang it in the microwave for a few mins and toss it in pesto. Probably the fastest fresh cooked lunch I know!

YouDancin · 04/01/2019 13:43

@MitziK thank you thank you!! I made THE BEST mash last night after your (funny) comments.
I microwaved some spuds and then just shoved them through the potato ricer! A miracle! The skin left behind completely empty and gorgeous fluffy mash!! thanks! Flowers

Has anyone mentioned a heat vacuum sealer yet?

I've got one.

We have a holiday home, so that is where all our unloved gadgets end up. They're not used there either.

Fashionista101 · 04/01/2019 19:44

Any of them to be honest. But they look good and makes it look like I can cook 😂 orders deliveroo

I take it you haven’t yet invested in a steam cleaner MOTHER 😂

Pasta maker - sold to a local artist for an experimental project. Still gathering dust, I hear, but not mine.

Spiraliser - tried it once and nearly spiralised my knuckles.

Garlic presses - DH and I disagree about these. I have a fab one from Lakeland which I find easy to clean but he hates washing. He hates it so much that he bought a new one which is dishwasher-proof. It's not as good as my trusty old one but good enough. If he ever throws out my favourite one, there will be war.

We have a Panasonic bread machine - it's used daily. Bread, pizza doughs, cinnamon swirls, tear'n'share bread. The recipe by a PP is spot on for a good medium loaf.

An Aeropress has replaced all our other coffee devices - espresso machine, cafetiere, stove-top coffee jug...

FelicityLemon · 10/01/2019 18:48

For anyone who wants to try out a spiraliser they can be found in this week's Lidl centre aisle at £2.99.

Bouverie12 · 27/03/2021 18:45

Bouverie12 · 27/03/2021 18:45
