Kitchen gadgets that never get used

I was tidying out my kitchen cupboards on Sunday and found this (hope the picture is attached!) for making coconut pyramids. My mum bought it years ago, god knows how many given that Lakeland dropped the plastics part of their name 22 years ago! She never opened it. I then took it and I’ve never opened it! It sits in the cupboard waiting for the day that I need to make coconut pyramids...

Has anyone else got any “must have” kitchen gadgets that have never been used but are still sat waiting for that just in case moment?

Waffle iron.

Polkapjs · 01/01/2019 18:05

Mandolin slicer thing. Just can’t be arsed getting it out. Oh and my Apple slicer thing which is actually good for getting children to eat apple but a faff

RealJudas · 01/01/2019 18:09

The fondue set..... I think once in our 12 year marriage has it been used. It's in the loft (in a box with the pestle and mortar), so we don't even pretend we're going to use it any more.

Cherry stoner, who has time for that malarkey
Ice cream machine, the bowl takes up half the freezer for 24 hours to chill then doesn’t freeze the ice cream

I wonder how many of these gadgets were purchased after seeing them at a friends house, and thinking "That looks neat ...." ?

Alwaysatyke · 01/01/2019 19:00

For all those grumbling about garlic presses - I agree, they're all shit. You need a garlic twist instead. I got one years ago and it's bloody brilliant (and easy to clean)

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 01/01/2019 19:08

Garlic presses are great for making fondant grass or hair for cake decorating, obviously never use it for garlic though.

I've got a blowtorch! Dh got it for me after I made creme brulee once about 7 years ago. It didn't come with a gas cylinder so I mentioned he'd need to get me one of those first and it's stayed in the packet, gasless, ever since.

Soubriquet · 01/01/2019 19:15

Electric grater/slicer

Thought it would be easier...it’s just a bugger to clean

Unescorted · 01/01/2019 19:15

Pasta makers are awesome for rolling flat breads, crackers, chapati or anything that needs to be rolled really thin. Other people roll pasta better.

Sushi shaper is my guilty secret. Bought and never ever used.

CatnissEverdene · 01/01/2019 19:18

Ice cream maker. It's such a faff as you have to freeze the bowl for 24 hours before making, so it takes out any impulsivity and it's too big to leave in the freezer all the time as we have an American side by side.

My slow cooker and steamer rarely come out too..... both take far too long and are horrid to clean after! Now we have an induction hob, anything slow doesn't cut the mustard Grin

Roamingseams · 01/01/2019 19:19

I'm amazed at all the people who say a garlic press - I find my Ikea one is much quicker than peeling a clove and chopping it. You do know that you don't need to peel the cloves?

My fondue set on the other hand has never been out of the box...

DryAsThingysFootwear · 01/01/2019 19:27

Sandwich toaster

twilightcafe · 01/01/2019 19:28

What do you mean, you don't need to peel the cloves?
What happens to the skin? Does it dissolve once cooked?

goingtotown · 01/01/2019 19:34

Slow cooker, never had a meal that I’ve enjoyed from it. I prefer food cooked in the oven.
Soup Maker, It does the same as a pan on the hob & blended with my hand blender.

masterstef · 01/01/2019 20:36

^^ how can you not enjoy a slow-cooked meat stew?!

gillybombilly · 01/01/2019 20:45

Yogurt maker - it gathered dust and never saw the light of day.

lucysmam · 01/01/2019 21:05

Spiraliser (might have made it's way to the charity shop when I last cleared out the kitchen, not sure where it is if not)
Pasta maker did make it's way to the charity shop.
Juicer given to me by my dad - never used, my friend wanted it so I hung on to it buy it's still in my pantry Hmm
Ice cream maker - sits on the side, used a total of twice.
Garlic crusher vanished, use a parmesan grater or ready crushed stuff these days.
Thing for cutting fruit and veg into fancy shapes that I picked up for a quid. I have loads of cutters, not entirely sure why I bought it tbh, and it's never been out of the box.
Stick blender comes out for pancakes & nothing else.

Erm...can't think of anything else but there probably is.

Oooh, yes I can, the steamer has moved house with me twice in the past five years but never been used in this house or the last one.

That's it. Honest!

Southwest12 a coconut pyramid maker sounds fun!

Theknacktoflying · 01/01/2019 21:16

biscuit gun
popcorn maker
coffee machine
gave my food processor away

Livingthedream12345 · 01/01/2019 21:38

I've got a sausage machine in the top cupboard. XH and I got it when we bought our first house. We had a hilarious afternoon making about a thousand sausages...once.
He stripped the house of useful and valuable stuff...Left the handy sausage maker Grin

dudsville · 01/01/2019 21:44

I've cream maker, pop corn machine, hot sandwich thing, bread machine, coffee bran grinder, coffee maker...

I used a cafetiere, toaster, kettle, electric mixer and a hand held blender. That's it.

Nnnnnineteen · 01/01/2019 21:46

Jam thermometer. I have never made jam.
Also have a fondue set, but it was given to me without the correct heating blob thing to go underneath, which I have never been able to track down. I have the world's smallest kitchen, so resent having kept it for a decade, but somehow it feels like I just haven't tried hard enough..

fitflopqueen · 01/01/2019 21:56

Think the ice-cream bowl has been sat in the garage freezer for about 2 years without being used.
Kitchen-aid, nespresso and ninja all used frequently. hand blender broke just before xmas so may replace - so handy for blending soup in the pan. Microwave not used very often but wouldn't like to be without it.

Southwest12 · 01/01/2019 22:21

Is anyone else now getting an ad for Kitchen Aid and the pasta attachment?!

DH has a pie maker, which is basically a sandwich maker but you put pastry in, and pie filling. It's massive, takes up a whole deep drawer and makes terrible pies because pastry doesn't like being cooked against a hot plate. I am not allowed to get rid of it because he loves it, even though it's been over five years since it was last used.
