Kitchen gadgets that never get used

I was tidying out my kitchen cupboards on Sunday and found this (hope the picture is attached!) for making coconut pyramids. My mum bought it years ago, god knows how many given that Lakeland dropped the plastics part of their name 22 years ago! She never opened it. I then took it and I’ve never opened it! It sits in the cupboard waiting for the day that I need to make coconut pyramids...

Has anyone else got any “must have” kitchen gadgets that have never been used but are still sat waiting for that just in case moment?

My potato ricer was charity-shopped years ago. It took far too long and too much faff to make a reasonable quantity of mash. Only suitable for very dainty little appetites, I suspect.

A dd asked for a spiralizer for Christmas! So I bought her one - not a huge thing , though - it was an extra present.

Slow cookers. Had two, one large and one small. Gave both away.
Food mixer. Looks nice but I use the electric hand whisk most of the time.
Ice cream maker. I have a large larder freezer so it's stored there. Unused for 4 years.
Food processor. I had to have one. Never used it. Laid idle for 3 years.
Gadgets I do use:
Avocado slicer/destoner
Bread maker
George Foreman grill (for meat and paninis)
Nutribullet for smoothies, definitely not for green juices!

Useless? Pasta machine, ice cream maker, garlic press and most of my magimix.

What I do use - Blender, stick blender for soup, and handheld beater.

Garlic - just cut the ends off, squash it with the flat of a knife and the skin comes off. Then chop.

For those who frequently use their bread makers, do you have a particular recipe you would recommend? I got one from the charity shop a few months back, but the one time I've tried it so far the bread came out very rubbery. I'm willing to give it another go, however, before it goes back the way it came.

My most useless gadget was the juicer, such a chore to clean. Took it to the charity shop the day I bought the bread maker...

Just realised that most of my unwanted gadgets are from MIL! She just loves to buy a 'thing' in a nice box!

delboysskinandblister · 02/01/2019 19:43

The combination Panasonic microwave - has long since died and been replaced with a basic microwave from Aldi because in reality it was only ever used to reheat meals never to spit roast joints of meat.
However, the enamalled tray with the rotisserie steel for roasting meat that came with the aforementioned combination microwave oven has been used over and over in the convential oven as a very durable and washable oven tray.

You don't need a garlic crusher or to peel cloves. Throw them in whole when doing tray bakes or lean on the flat side of a big knife to bruise the clove (pop it outfrom its skin) and then chop. Then you only have a knife and board to wash.

delboysskinandblister · 02/01/2019 19:44

*enamelled.

Never used - barista style coffee machine.
Rarely used - apple corer
Used all the fine - small grater from a cracker 5 years ago, easier to clean, great for nutmeg, cheese and garlic.
Hand blender - son hates onion so I just hide them
3 tier steamer - all the veg ( including par boiled potato) done at the same time and veg water for gravy.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 02/01/2019 20:18

Bread maker
Electric vegetable grater
Cake pop kit

Lifeofsmiley · 02/01/2019 20:21

Not for my kitchen but my karcher window vac.

NannyMcfanny · 02/01/2019 20:56

Gadget swap anyone? Grin

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 02/01/2019 21:00

Ha yes, the spiralizer, which we have unused in the cupboard (I am sure it will change my life for the better when I do try it...?), chocolate fountain, a present from the MIL about 10 years ago, still in the box, and lots of chocolate moulds (life is to short not to munch on lovingly pre-made Lindt Santas, etc). And the garlic crusher, which leaves half the garlic behind (I just smash it with a knife now). But some things I wondered if I would use, I do use a lot - Breadmaker (most days), mandolin occasionally, waffle maker a lot.

XmasHolly · 02/01/2019 21:16

Bread maker is used 3/4 times a week. Mandolin probably 2 times a week. Pineapple corer/slicer 3 times/year.

Apple corer/slicer in one : chazzered. Screw thingy for making cucumber garlands Confused : also in chazzer. Julienne slicer in bin (along with much of my skin from my fingers).

Some things are better off just bought ready-to-eat. Grin

VanGoghsDog · 02/01/2019 22:01

Yeah, the Tefal electric grater, just too much faff.

A sushi making kit, with the folding thing etc, ex bought it, I left it with him when I moved out never having used it.

VanGoghsDog · 02/01/2019 22:02

I cube a pineapple every week, and just do it with a knife.

AdaColeman · 02/01/2019 22:06

The electric carving knife never sees the light of day, just too much of a performance to set up and position.

IvysMum12 · 02/01/2019 22:12

I make coconut pyramids at Passover. Been using a wetted egg-cup to shape them for years. Didn't occur to me to look for proper shapers!

NecklessMumster · 02/01/2019 22:12

I've always wanted an ice cream maker but you're all putting me off. I want the expensive freezer ones though

Polkapjs · 02/01/2019 22:18

I need to try my mandolin then? I’ve a herb chopping board (and knife) never used too!

Binglebong · 02/01/2019 22:34

Sadly cant find a clip for BareBelliedSneetch but:

"The Ooh-Aah bird is so-called because it lays square eggs."

bumblingbovine49 · 02/01/2019 22:44

We use our coffee machine several times a day !!! Both DH and I have used it masses over Christmas

Brwadmaker not used much. Food dehydrator not used much either . We have just got a soda stream and I know DH use it as he drinks about 6-7 two 2 litre bottles of fizzy water a week ( has weaned himself off coke and other fizzy drinks to just fizzy water now) and I am not going to.buy any more now. He is defnitely using it so far anyway.

Toaster that makes poached or boiled eggs at the same time. Used occasionally but it doesn't take up much more room than a normal toaster so not really a problem

EdWinchester · 02/01/2019 23:09

We’re on our second Nespresso machine as the other one got used so much.

I don’t cook at all, but my dh fancies himself as a chef. He uses a mandolin all the time.

MillionScarletRoses · 02/01/2019 23:17

Slow cooker. Used to make stock in it, but it took ages and stunk the house out. Any other dishes in it I wasn’t keen on - overcooked, bland and mushy. Dishes made on the hob or in the oven taste much better. I think Nigella Lawson had the same complaint about it.

Don’t use my many pastry cutters, piping bag and other baking paraphernalia. Apart from cake tins. Haven’t got the time to faff about for hours baking these days.

Bread maker is used lots, however. I was lucky to come across a Marjorie Lambert’s breadmaker book in the charity shop a few days after I bought the machine because the recipe booklet which came with it was crap.

Today I baked bread twice in it. Kids absolutely love it, it’s soft and fluffy, but with a lovely crust. I often set it for bread to be baked for when the children are back from school. It’s a nice snack for them and means we can have dinner later when DH gets in. It is like the best deli bread and costs pennies.

Should use my steamer more. The beauty of it is you put veggies in, walk away and forget about it. Don’t need to watch it like boiling pans on the hob. It saves lots of vitamins and preserves flavour. I can tell when something was steamed, rather than boiled. I am also told it is good for batch cooking eggs (waves to fellow low carbers)

MillionScarletRoses · 02/01/2019 23:20

Oh, a mezzaluna knife for chopping herbs. An ordinary kitchen knife does the job just as well.
