I can't work out what happend between the woman who worked in the same office as the office tart and the guy she was in love with for 2 years so many hours and 30 minutes. It's the American/Canadian women with the brother in hospital. Did we know if her and her guy got together properly?

She looks almost exactly their age, and it's never looked remotely odd to me. People are looking for so-called "creepy " things all the time now.

But Martin Freeman and Joanna Page aren't meant to be actual porn actors, they're stand-ins whilst the lighting and camera crews get all the shots lined up before the real porn actors are filmed.

And the Liam Neeson character and his stepson have been preparing for the impending death of their terminally ill wife/mother for ages - hence LN's speech (particularly about Claudia Shiffer) at the funeral. Sure, 5 weeks is no time at all, but it's not RL!

I do chuckle at Colin firth making up Portuguese - 'Con grande plesoro' :)

I sat through this film once and thought the above comments about a turd in sparkly paper was just about right. Very 2d characters doing linear things with lots of tear jerking cliches thrown in.
BUT I don’t remember any porn in it?

Heuschrecke · 21/12/2018 06:13

There isn't any real porn, but the storyline with Martin Freeman and Joanna Page has them playing stand-ins in the making of a porn movie (see my comment above) which is how they meet. Tony (played by Abdul Salis and who is the sensible mate of the character Colin) plays a lighting technician in the making of the porn film.

Just read somewhere else online that there was only 5 years in age between KK and the actor who played Sam. Apparently she was 17 and he was 13 at the time of filming Shock

Annoyed me immensely that Colin Firth used a disabilist term. Yuck.

mikado1 · 21/12/2018 17:50

What did Colin Firth say?

It's all very "man wooing girl with big romantic gestures whilst the girl stands passively by saying not much at all" isn't it?

I mean, out of all the story arcs there are only two that are told from the woman's perspective and they both end unhappily: Laura Linney losing out on love, Emma Thompson likewise.

The men however go off on their adventurous jolly capers, flying off to the States, traipsing to remote Portuguese villages, dancing down staircases and devising crazy romantic gestures to capture the hearts of their (always younger) women.

If you're a girl watching it you do get the subtle impression that to find love you need to sit back, wait and not be too fat (else you're mocked by a whole portuguese restaurant) or want too much and even then you're fucked bcs your man is going to turn his eye towards a younger model when you get a few wrinkles.

Oh and the only same-sex friendships with any depth are between men: father and son, rock star and manager.

Yep, it sucks.

I don't think Martin and Joanna are stand-ins for porn actors. I think there're body doubles for A-listers who don't want to do nude scenes (see Martin's comment re standing in for Brad Pitt in Seven Years in Tibet). In actual fact, their whole story line doesn't really make any sense other than to throw up a few 'hilarious' story lines based on a couple getting to know each other while her naked thighs are wrapped around his head.

I loved this film, but find it more problematic each time I watch it. As IF a professional women at No. 10 would make disparaging comments about another woman's body to the PM, let alone one built like Joan Holloway.

Speaking of which, one of Colin's American stunners is January Jones.

Heuschrecke · 21/12/2018 19:37

"traipsing to remote Portuguese villages". Colin Firth didn't traipse to a remote Portuguese village - it was a Portuguese quarter somewhere in a city in the south of France. IIRC he flew to either Nice or Marseille, where Aurelia lived. And, if you recall, he used to give her a lift home every afternoon after she'd been cleaning in his house in the south of France!

"I don't think Martin and Joanna are stand-ins for porn actors. I think there're body doubles for A-listers who don't want to do nude scenes (see Martin's comment re standing in for Brad Pitt in Seven Years in Tibet)". I fear you're incorrect. I recall Tony (the character, lighting engineer) saying to M&J that he needed to get the lighting right 'before the actors are actually filmed' (or words to that effect)!

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 21/12/2018 21:45

Well blow me down you're right. I always thought he'd gone to Portugal because all the people in the street were portuguese. Traipsing to remote Marseille portuguese restaurants then! My point still stands..

Heuschrecke · 22/12/2018 19:42

It could hardly be described as a 'remote' restaurant if it was just in the backstreets of Marseille though?!?! But I guess I'm splitting hairs here?!!!! Surely it was far more romantic to be jetting off to Marseille than getting the tube to Stockwell?
