I can't work out what happend between the woman who worked in the same office as the office tart and the guy she was in love with for 2 years so many hours and 30 minutes. It's the American/Canadian women with the brother in hospital. Did we know if her and her guy got together properly?

Everytime I watch it with DD, one of us says "Turn your bloody phone off!" Just for an hour! The there's that heartbreaking scene near the end when she says goodnight to him as he leaves the office, and the pain shows in her face as he goes. Can't blame him, can't really blame her, but that brother should not come first all the time.

Oh man that Karl guy was hot!

In fact I have this on DVD and tis the time of year so it might get a re-run in the next week or so

My DVD has the bonus option to watch the film with the director and cast chatting while watching it. They said several scenes were cut which finished story lines. Apparently the Rowan Atkinson character was meant to be an angel who orchestrated the whole thing.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 15/12/2018 15:46

I took the Emma Thompson waiting for Alan Rickman to mean hed gone off for a few days and they were trying to rebuild their marriage

Clawdy · 15/12/2018 15:54

That Jezebel interpretation, like much of the article, is wrong. The brother doesn't "call sometimes", he calls her constantly. She is completely alone, because of his neediness. She loves him, but whether he is capable of loving her is unclear.

ginghamstarfish · 15/12/2018 16:16

Just watched it (again) today, and yes it always bugs me. It's surely doing neither of them any favours, and I wonder that the place the brother is in would let him call any time he likes. Sad that such a loving sister would allow this to control her life by not putting some boundaries in place.

BaconAndAvocado · 15/12/2018 17:07

The ONLY good, storyline in this film is the Emma Thompson one.

Poignant, moving and beautifully acted.

My friend had something very similar happen to her when discovering a hidden present Sad

Crimbobimbo · 15/12/2018 17:14

I never understood why the Canadian woman and her brother were both in the UK.

MaryofMislethwaiteManor · 15/12/2018 17:16

There was a scene/storyline that tjry cut apparently. The headmistress of the school and a dying partner. Too depressing I guess.

NO ONE has to have a conversation to be ‘in love’ in the film at all! The little boy and Joanna, the guy who’s in love with Keira knightly (which is creepy and especially when he comes to the door- that is his best mate upstairs!!)

Nope. Just admiring someone from afar is enough to be ‘in love’ with them Confused

winsinbin · 15/12/2018 17:19

The Laura Linney character really annoyed me, she seemed to be martyring herself for absolutely no reason. It wasn’t going to improve her brothers situation or make him feel better. It seemed totally pointless and to me hinted at a deeply dysfunctional side to her.

OlennasWimple · 15/12/2018 17:21

Karl was very beautiful

I thought the story line about the guy who went to the US and pulled lots of beautiful women was far fetched - until I moved to the US and was showered with "Oh my god, I love your accent!" comments. I guess if I had wanted to turn them into the start of a flirtation, it would have been very easy to do so curse my happily married status

RedForShort · 15/12/2018 17:26

Kiera knightly is annoying.

But her character does say to her husband's friend that he's never spoken to her. (Watching right now whilst sick in bed .)

RedForShort · 15/12/2018 18:16

Hang on. I know I've just watched it. But Liam Neeson is Emma Thompson's brother isn't he? Hugh Grant is also her brother. So Liam and Hugh are brothers then.

Was Hugh at Liam's wife's funeral? 🤔

(Well obviously the character names!)

MaryofMislethwaiteManor · 15/12/2018 18:20

No Liam Neeson is just Emma Thompson’s mate, they’re not related.

RedForShort · 15/12/2018 18:24

Is he? How weird I though the were brother and sister!!

FantasticFeasts · 15/12/2018 18:25

I find the early bits with Liam Neeson hard to watch now, as that happened to him in real life and he has 2 boys doesn't he?

Pumperthepumper · 15/12/2018 18:25

@Clawdy what else did that article get wrong?

RedForShort · 15/12/2018 18:27

Apologies for dodgy typing. My phone is being awkward and randomly refusing to produce letters and spaces.

Crimbobimbo · 15/12/2018 18:30

Liam's character is over his wife pretty quick with Claudia.

TwistedChristmas · 15/12/2018 18:33

Think I might have to watch this tonight now with a glass or two of knock off Baileys.
The scenes with the phone calls really wind me up though. As does the pathetic-ness of the character Alan Rickman plays, as does Keira knightly saying she looks pretty, and the porn scenes made me twitch in their adsurdness, then there's Colin and the simpering girls. For all it winds me up I do love it though especially Colin Firth, the boy who secretly loves Keira, the dominatrix doll, Martine and Hugh and the Christmas show. The pain of young love, the proposal from Colin Firth to Aurelia, Aurelia's sister and the whole madness of families thing. Rowan Atkinson takin forever with that gift wrapping elevates my blood pressure something awful though. I'll refill my glass during that bit Grin

I've not watched it since discovering mumsnet and my views on it have changed since MN taught me about boundaries, and feminism. I shall watch with fresh eyes later.

Thanks for this thread Xmas Smile

IcedPurple · 15/12/2018 18:35

The ONLY good, storyline in this film is the Emma Thompson one.

Absolutely right.

I really detest "Love Actually". Smug, unfunny and smarmy. I don't know what's worse - Hugh Grant in Number 10, or Keira 'I'm quite pretty, aren't I?' Knightley.

MaryofMislethwaiteManor · 15/12/2018 18:37

And the fat shaming of Martine McCutchen. You’d think she was elaphantine the way they go on. ‘Sizeable arse’ ‘chubby’ ‘HUGE thighs’ Hmm

IcedPurple · 15/12/2018 18:41

Yup. Why no comments on the physical flaws of any of the male characters, such as Hugh's wrinkles? Or better yet, no such comments on any of the characters. Martine is lovely.

Lovestonap · 15/12/2018 18:44

It's a film I used to love and now I can't BEAR. The beautiful moving funeral scene completely ruined by the fact that he moved on to fancying Claudia in what, 5 weeks?! Don't really like any of the story lines. Although it does contain the immortal line '8 is a lot of legs David', which I use as much as possible Grin

kenandbarbie · 15/12/2018 18:45

Karl is also the bird sanctuary guy out of rio. Fun fact.

I think Richard Curtis said Emma Thompson and Alan rickman did split up Xmas Sad
