How do ya like them apples?

I eat apples every day. Mainly in the bath. (but that's a whole other thread).

I love pink lady, gala and braeburn. Now the problem I'm having is that it's a lottery in whether its going to juicy, crisp and lovely or powdery, disappointing and tasteless.

A poster recommended (on another thread) braeburn for this time of year. So I bought two (not risking a 6 pack) and man oh man! Big, crisp and juicy. Gorgeous!

Can anyone else recommend a good apple for this time of year? I found some raspberry rippled flesh apples in morrisons last month but they were on a limited offer.

I love a Jazz. I had some called Envy a couple of weeks ago and they were fabulous, very crunchy and juicy.

HopefullyYes · 17/09/2018 20:52

Braeburn or Jazz apples.

The braeburn I got from morrisons were perfect 👌

Cox's orange pippins, obv.

SapphireSeptember · 17/09/2018 20:56

Sainsbury's have some gorgeous Cox's apples in, crisp, juicy and tart. I bought some other types but haven't tried them yet.

If anyone sees these anywhere please come back and tell me!

Jazz apples rule. All the best bits of a Braeburn with none of the down sides. Russets are like potatoes pretending to be apples, sorry russets.

chimppyjamas · 17/09/2018 20:58

Right now English Discovery apples are delicious. You can only get them for a few weeks. Waitrose had them the other day so I bought three bags and gave myself stomach ache.

Florries · 17/09/2018 21:01

HATE, lothe and detest powdery, wolly apples. Crisp and juicy only please.

HopefullyYes · 17/09/2018 21:08

Florries

Which is why I stopped buying bags. Take a bite throw it away x 6 Grin

That picture looks like a Discovery

Following the news about the needles in Australian fruit and the copy cat attacks, I currently like my apples thinly sliced!!

Applepudding2018 · 17/09/2018 21:53

Discovery? Worcesters?

goose1964 · 17/09/2018 22:02

I find most apples are now too sweet with no real texture. I love Cox's orang pippens and russet but I had some from Tesco which were a variety I'd never heard of , sounded a bit Spanish, but they actually had some apple flavour rather than just sweetness

ThanksHunkyJesus · 17/09/2018 22:07

Spartan apple straight off the tree!

ShovingLeopard · 17/09/2018 22:08

Kanzi apples are the business. Always crisp and crunchy and deliciously well balanced between sweet and sharp. Like a cross between Braeburn and a Pink Lady, if you catch them both on a really good day. Have only ever seen them in some Waitroses, though.

MadMaryBoddington · 17/09/2018 22:10

Russets here. Currently eating my way through a crateful from my tree. Try farmers markets to find them.

My favourite apple tree however is American Mother, but it is very old and rickety and hasn’t fruited this year. If this is the end for it, I shall have to replace it with another one. The apples are red, crisp and juicy - perfection. I’ve never seen them in shops though, sorry.

KurriKurri · 17/09/2018 22:15

Envy from M and S but have a short season - think they are in stock now.

ChinUpShouldersBack · 17/09/2018 22:18

Morissons have Cripps Red at the moment. Lovely.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/09/2018 22:20

HopefullyYes my Envy came from Dunnes, which isn't much help to you unless you're in Dublin. Sorry.

Lolipoplady · 17/09/2018 22:23

Just wanted to second that those apples in the photo look like discoveries. They are the most amazing apples in the world, but only available for a short while at the middle/end of August through to late September. They're pretty much coming to the end of the season now so get in quick!

PickAChew · 17/09/2018 22:27

@treaclesoda Sainsburys has always been one of the better supermarkets for a variety of apples. Tesco is crap, even when they're in season here.
