How do ya like them apples?

I eat apples every day. Mainly in the bath. (but that's a whole other thread).

I love pink lady, gala and braeburn. Now the problem I'm having is that it's a lottery in whether its going to juicy, crisp and lovely or powdery, disappointing and tasteless.

A poster recommended (on another thread) braeburn for this time of year. So I bought two (not risking a 6 pack) and man oh man! Big, crisp and juicy. Gorgeous!

Can anyone else recommend a good apple for this time of year? I found some raspberry rippled flesh apples in morrisons last month but they were on a limited offer.

Echo the comment about English Discovery - sweet, with white and pink flesh. Unlike any other apple but they tend to be the earliest in the season and last only a few weeks. If you manage to get any now you'll be doing well, so snap em up!

All English traditional varieties are good tho, and cox orange pippin are lovely (tho tend to be later in the season; they keep far longer too). Some national trust properties, like clumber Park, preserve the old English varieties that supermarkets no longer stock and it's worth keeping an eye out; they sometimes have 'apple days' which is basically apple heaven Smile

LittleMachine · 17/09/2018 22:33

I used to love Empire, you don’t see them anymore.

PersisFord · 17/09/2018 22:38

Discovery! My in laws have a MASSIVE tree and we gorge ourselves.

I like coxs, russets, Braeburn too...but I deeply resent buying imported apples at this time of year so I just buy whatever is British.

My apple tree has had a good year and they taste great but they are a bit too hard.

Mmmm russets! Love those and Envy too!

DollyDayScream · 17/09/2018 22:45

Russets and Cox all the way, empire are also good.

So fed up of pink lady, gala, Braeburn supermarket varieties.

SapphireSeptember · 17/09/2018 22:51

I've seen Kanzi in Sainsbury's too, I think I bought some the other day, I can't remember! They are delicious, I first tried them last year and was smitten. Cox's Orange Pippin are really hard to find, they're my favourite.

BaronessBomburst · 17/09/2018 22:52

The new season's Elstar have just hit the shops where I live. They're juicy, crunchy, sharp and apply, with just the right hint of sweetness.
Otherwise my go-to apples are Braeburn, or Cox if I can get them.

AwkwardSquad · 18/09/2018 05:41

English Apple fan here, I love this time of year, especially the first sight of a box of Discovery apples. They’re about over now and it’ll be Katies and Worcesters next.

I get apples in season from a small greengrocer, and from the trees in my garden (although the haven’t done very well this year). Cookers from the allotment.

Tanaqui · 18/09/2018 05:45

Discovery are delicious but don’t keep- hence the very short season. Waitrose is good for having four packs of local or more unusual apples, little more £ but definitely worth it.

Airaforce · 18/09/2018 06:02

I love empire apples, crisp red skin and just the right amount of tartness.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 18/09/2018 06:17

Cox's are the best, but only for a couple of months, once they have been stored a bit....bleurgh.

mrsnec · 18/09/2018 06:28

They've just finished but we grow a variety called Anna. I think they're native to Israel but grown all over the med. They are a mix of Pink Lady and Golden Delicious.

We find the bigger and smoother they are and the darker the pink blush then the tastier they are.

Gatekeeper · 18/09/2018 06:38

Cripps Pink if you can get em.
Another Russet and Cox's Orange pippin fan...such delightful names 😊

NewBlueGoo · 18/09/2018 06:56

Windsor apples! They taste like my childhood.

ArcheryAnnie · 18/09/2018 08:33

There is nothing finer than an Egremont Russet - firm, nutty, totally delicious. But I will also accept a Cox or a Braeburn.

LongSummerDays · 18/09/2018 08:45

You know how people throw bread in the lake for ducks to eat?

As an aside, please don't feed bread to waterfowl - it can make them ill and may even kill them as wet and rotting bread can form a mould which if the duck ingests could get into their lungs. Instead of bread they love sweet corn, peas and bird seed which is far better for them.

Mini rant over Smile

What an excellent thread Grin

I'm taking notes - must try Envy, Kanzi and Elstar.

I'm a Braeburn devotee myself, I find them pretty reliable. Jazz and Pink Lady are good too. I'm amazed to hear you listing Gala as one of your favourites OP as I avoid them like the plague - I've never had a Gala that was edible. Always woolly and bleurgh.

Mind you, as a child I loved Granny Smiths - wouldn't touch them with a bargepole now.

Frogletmamma · 18/09/2018 09:19

Another one to vote for the egremont russet. It isn't pretty but is delicious.

SilentBob · 18/09/2018 09:23

Oh god I really really want an apple right now!!!

HopefullyYes · 18/09/2018 11:55

Kanzi apples are the business. Always crisp and crunchy and deliciously well balanced between sweet and sharp. Like a cross between Braeburn and a Pink Lady, if you catch them both on a really good day. Have only ever seen them in some Waitroses, though.

I saw these in morrisons today.

Are Discovery the same as Raspberry Ripple Flesh?

I know I kept trying them and they'd be one or two that were edible and lovely. But I've given up on them now. Bought some Cox today.

Fridge cold Granny Smiths saw me through hyperemesis with my youngest fruit.
Red Delicious with my oldest one.

Anything British at this time of year is an absolute must. Or make up a pot of caramel and dip a Cox’s in there....

I’m salavating now

Airaforce · 18/09/2018 12:25

Cut granny smiths into slices, sprinkle salt & a tiny bit of chilli powder and enjoy. Omg it's so delicious, anyone on here from my parents part of the world will know this. It's very traditional in my parent's home country to sprinkle salt onto a tart apple before eating.

beeefcake · 18/09/2018 12:45

I used to always have pink lady's but they don't seem as sweet as they used to be

I now have jazz apples, they are lovely

KurriKurri · 18/09/2018 13:21

Gala can be very hit and miss - i've had some lovely crispy ones (although I do find them a bit sweet sometimes) , but I've also had some awful inedible woolly ones.

Seeing the way the apples are put out on the shelves in some supermarkets (flung from the cart, dropped, and generally man handled) I'm suprised there are ever any edible ones.

My parents had a lot of apples trees in their garden and apples were carefully picked and stored and we learnt to handle them with care. In autumn we all had long wooden tables in our bedroooms covered in stored apples (handy if you got peckish in the night !).
