How do ya like them apples?

I eat apples every day. Mainly in the bath. (but that's a whole other thread).

I love pink lady, gala and braeburn. Now the problem I'm having is that it's a lottery in whether its going to juicy, crisp and lovely or powdery, disappointing and tasteless.

A poster recommended (on another thread) braeburn for this time of year. So I bought two (not risking a 6 pack) and man oh man! Big, crisp and juicy. Gorgeous!

Can anyone else recommend a good apple for this time of year? I found some raspberry rippled flesh apples in morrisons last month but they were on a limited offer.

My DD bought some of those raspberry ripple ones for me a couple of weeks ago when I was in hospital - I thought they were a type of pink lady, but I can't remember what it said on the packet. They were nice though.

I always sprinkle salt and chilli on watermelon @Airaforce

Thanks to the posters who recommended Envy. I got some in M&S and they are gorge.

Zari apples are really good too, I'm eating one now!

I like a russet are they in the shops yet?
But they're an autumn apple. Crisp and a bit sour perfect!

SapphireSeptember · 19/09/2018 18:33

I haven't seen any russets. I've just eaten an early Windsor though, and I've got some Worcester to try in the fridge.

Just read this while salivating, I want to try Spartan apples, they sound wonderful. I'm going to see if I can find Envy in M&S too!

MulticolourMophead · 19/09/2018 19:26

I don't really each many apples, but if I do, it's the russets I like. Egremont is one name I remember, but I have seen (and eaten) others whose names I don't remember.

Nettletheelf · 19/09/2018 19:55

I’m now eating a ‘British smitten’ from M&S. Not quite as good as Envy but still lovely. Tastes a bit like pear drops.

Whatthefunk · 19/09/2018 20:38

I love Discovery! I planted my own tree, 5 years ago and from the 2nd year, we've had about 5lbs of applesSmile

bellinisurge · 19/09/2018 21:06

I have a mini Egremont Russett tree. It hasn't fruited for two years. Sad!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/09/2018 21:10

I'm eating unnamed wild ones. I love this time of year when you can go scout around hedgerows and get proper wild apples. The ones I have are as big as supermarket apples but properly crisp and sharp. I hate over-sweet apples and Braeburns and so on just taste blandly sugary to me. Granny Smiths are sharp but I don't like the greasy skin.

Fans of raspberry ripple apples - I just spotted this in a fruit tree catalogue. Now you can grow your own!

Another one coming on to say jazz apples.

The bath is a good place to eat them too as they are so juicy it drips down your chin.

Delicious 😋

MinaPaws · 22/09/2018 08:18

The best apple of all is a perfect Discovery. Tiny, crisp with white flesh into which the red of the skin bleeds. They taste of essence of apple and roses. But they'r eopnly aorund for two weeks (misse dthem this year) and the mass produced ones are often fluffy and horrible. But the real thing is the apple of the Gods.

Next in line ot the throne is a crisp Russet, not too sharp.

MinaPaws · 22/09/2018 08:21

We have a Charles Ross apple tree in the garden. Its apples are huge and crisp and sweet-sharp like apples from my childhood, not the sugary tat with thick waxy skins you get everywhere these days. But they over-ripen really quickly. So we have to eat a mass of apples in September.
Apple tarts, sauce, lots and lots and lots of crumbles.

PersisFord · 22/09/2018 17:15

I’ve just made the last crumble from our tree. The only British apples in our supermarket are coxes so that’s what we have, but they aren’t great yet.

TeddyBee · 22/09/2018 17:39

I have a bowl of home grown egremont russets I’m working through. It’s been a funny old year for them though, about half the apples never really got past the size of nectarines.
