Does this picture scare you?

I came across it on Twitter.

I feel irrationally petrified if I look too closely Blush

I have a huge shark phobia. Not sure why as I'm aware none are even close to this size and most aren't the slightest bit interested in me as food.

But this morning I was in the shower and wondered if the shark could burst through the taps

As a child I would go swimming doing lengthens and always go incredibly fast, completely fuelled by the belief a shark could possible chase me.

The only time I've ever had a wobble about going in the ocean was 4 years ago. My husband was diving in the Red Sea, I couldn't due to ear problems but went out on the dive boat and snorkelled while he was diving. While we were there a man was unfortunately killed by a shark while snorkelling in shallower waters. It took me a couple of days and a lot of encouragement from the divers to get me back in the water as snorkellers are more at risk than divers, being on the surface of the water.

How about catshark?

Thanks for the link @dundee12, off for a gander!

@travellinglighter, I love the ocean but have an irrational fear of dark water, it terrifies me. I couldn't even walk round the pond in our local park at night! There is chance in hell anyone could convince me to do a night dive or snorkel. My stepson got an octopus wrapped round his arm the last time he did it. Hoping to tick the Great Barrier Reef off our list next year, currently pricing up flights.

CandidCamerama · 26/08/2018 12:29

This is why I wouldn't go cage diving. Don't watch this if you are of a nervous disposition it might give you heart failure. I love the way that no one seems to know whether there is anyone in the cage or not.

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 12:30

Familymanhusband fing hell, almost spat my hula hoops out!

sulflower enjoy, I really want a big print.

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 12:34

CandidCamerama Terrifying, particularly that they had no idea someone was in there!

Baylis · 26/08/2018 12:37

Yes! That picture does scare me. I also saw a picture from the latest Jurassic film of a ginormous crocodile (or something like that, didn't look at it for too long) which was in the sea ready to get someone surfing. Don't know what it is and large animals under the water, but it terrifies me!

sulflower · 26/08/2018 12:37

I've seen that video CandidCamera. It happened off Guadelupe Island, there have been a few incidents there concerning cage diving. I've watched them all Grin.

dundee12, some amazing photo's on that site. Love the story about the kayak and the great white. Fantastic pics of manta rays, we've got footage of them too, beautiful, graceful and massive.

Baylis · 26/08/2018 12:40

This is what I was talking about! Freaks me out.

ciderhouserules · 26/08/2018 12:42

I went cage-diving off the coast of South Africa for Great Whites - they are beautiful, terrifying and soulless! We were told to keep our elbow/fingers/feet well inside the cage Grin

They literally emerged out of the murk. I have video, it's amazing

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 12:43

baylis that’s a mosasaurus.

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 12:46

sulflower 👍🏼

SerenDippitty · 26/08/2018 12:47

I don’t swim in the sea much because I have a terrible fear of going out of my depth without realising it. This has happened to me. I can’t tread water. Also as a child I fell into a hole once while wading in waist deep water and never forgotten it. The idea of water literally miles deep (7 miles down in the Challenger Deep, in the Marianas Trench in the North Pacific) does scare me. But I like cruises!

lunar1 · 26/08/2018 12:50

Sharks I'm fine with. Jellyfish though, I'm terrified. I was stung really badly as a child and have a scar round my ankle.

I was fine after It, then about a year later my mum told me if I stayed in the bath too long the flannel would turn into a jellyfish and sting me again. I still cant use a flannel, has to be a sponge.

Thanks mum, I was 6 and yes, she is a fucking moron!

Thinkingofausername1 · 26/08/2018 12:50

Ah damn it I thought you were going to post a photo of a ghost! That's not scary at all. However, I saw a ghost recently and I often on wonder if it would have smiled for the camera Grin. I felt sick instead of scared though perhaps from the shock of seeing it.

PutANiceFloorIn · 26/08/2018 12:53

Yeah, it makes me feel a bit funny OP. I think it's the size of shark relative to the boat.

Lastoftheusernames · 26/08/2018 12:59

When I first saw the posters for The Meg I did tense up. I too have a minor irrational fear of sharks which is 100% thanks to Jaws. I've felt it in the sea and also in swimming pools (as an adult Blush) but usually manage to remain calm. Incredibly I have also swum with (supposedly harmless) sharks. Quite how I managed this I'm not actually sure. I think it was either a case of controlling myself or going into full-on panic mode.

LostStars39 · 26/08/2018 13:01

Yes! That picture made my whole body go to jelly.
I have such a phobia of sharks and open water Shock

gunnergirl · 26/08/2018 13:08

went to see the mega last night with my 11 d's my excuse was I wanted to see Jason Statham tbh it was bloody massive bigger than jaws but was so far fetched

Bloobs · 26/08/2018 13:16

No, no shark is that big and also it looks like it's wearing a comedy hat.

I tried to be scared of Rees-Mogg but he looks strangely hawt in that pic. Blush I'm a lefty remainer I promise!

thenightsky · 26/08/2018 13:36

CandidCamerama How the hell did that shark get through the narrow bars and into the cage?? Shock

LoveB · 26/08/2018 13:48

That picture has freaked me out too Shock

sulflower · 26/08/2018 14:01

There is a 'viewing' area inside the cage, like a bigger gap between the bars. I've seen the video from the guy's camera that was trapped in the cage. Once the shark put its head through the initial gap it could only get out one way, through the top. They can't reverse.

SerenDippitty · 26/08/2018 17:26

Here are some shots of the mechanical shark from Jaws, taken on a tour of Universal Studios in 1982.

thedevilinablackdress · 26/08/2018 17:35

This from the BBC as couple of days ago confirms that more people are killed in the UK by cows each year than by sharks around the whole world.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-45285615

Having said that, the picture did give me the fear a bit as I'm scared of the open sea and what lies beneath...
