Does this picture scare you?

I came across it on Twitter.

I feel irrationally petrified if I look too closely Blush

I have a huge shark phobia. Not sure why as I'm aware none are even close to this size and most aren't the slightest bit interested in me as food.

But this morning I was in the shower and wondered if the shark could burst through the taps

As a child I would go swimming doing lengthens and always go incredibly fast, completely fuelled by the belief a shark could possible chase me.

Does this picture scare you?

I'm with you OP. This picture has just made my throat close up a little...😳

noteveryonescupoftea · 26/08/2018 11:49

Orange I'm not scared of death as such. Just the gigantic sizing (that doesn't actually exist)

No. But then I don't cross paths with many sharks in my day to day life. Maybe that's just me.

NoSleepzzzz · 26/08/2018 11:49

I know what you mean and it gives me the same horrid feeling that I got when I stood directly in front of the mouth end of Damien Hirst's shark. It makes me feel very vulnerable and, after an incident that happened in the sea when I was about 11, I have always been scared about what is in the water with me. I won't ever get out of my depth, even by a few inches, despite being a strong and confident swimmer, and am not a fan of the sea/beaches/boats at all.

SoyDora · 26/08/2018 11:52

So you’re not scared of real life actual sharks, just the absolutely gigantic ones that don’t exist?

sulflower · 26/08/2018 11:52

I saw one before in an Aquarium and felt no fear. It wasn't very large, and it was a great white.

It wouldn't have been a great white, they can't be kept successfully in captivity. I love sharks, I'm fascinated by them and have seen them in the wild on my underwater adventures but not a great white... yet.

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 11:53

For any people scared of sharks avoid the waters in Reunion Island.

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 11:54

sulflower I would love to see a great white but don’t think I could handle a cage dive.

Branleuse · 26/08/2018 11:55

i do have a bit of a shark phobia, probably thallasophobia, although I do like swimming in the sea, I get quite regular doses of panic, even in lakes, that I will be grabbed and lured to my death by some sort of fish.
Im generally OK if I can see the bottom. I also get the fear in swimming pools too sometimes

www.brainjet.com/world/2357810/19-pictures-that-prove-you-definitely-have-thalassophobia-fear-of-the-sea/
All of these pictures give me some degree of discomfort, even though i can see the beauty too.

Id much rather fall out of an aeroplane than off a boat.

sulflower · 26/08/2018 11:55

I saw The Meg and it was crap

I read the book a long time ago and was quite excited they were making the movie. Watched the trailer and was disappointed, not least because Jason Statham was the star as I think he's a crap actor. I won't be going to see it.

You should have posted a warning!!!! Is there any chance that MNHQ could amend the title to warn kind people of a sensitive and caring nature that there is a disturbing image in this thread?

No, but it would have when I was younger. I used to be terrified of flushing the toilet and think that sharks could come out of it. I sometimes had the same thought about spiders.

I do have a weird fear of clogs though! I’m not scared of them, but they make me feel a bit hot, panicky and disgusted. I initially never thought anything of them, but saw a silly dance off in clogs on a comedy tv programme when I was about 18. The back of my neck got really hot and I thought I was going to be sick Blush. Luckily, I don’t come across clogs or pictures of them during daily life. I bet I could desensitise myself by buying a pair though.

I could handle a cage dive no problem but it's the ethics of them that worries me. I watch shark videos all the time, love them. We've been lucky enough to capture amazing footage of whale sharks, those are massive but totally harmless.

Paddley · 26/08/2018 12:02

Is that a little boat in the picture? I can't quite make it out.

TerfsUp · 26/08/2018 12:03

No, the shark picture does not frighten me in the least. Heights, now. That's an entirely different matter.

megletthesecond · 26/08/2018 12:04

Yes 😱.
I always worry about this stuff when I'm swimming in the sea. I still do it though.

Tanith · 26/08/2018 12:04

Those teeth are way too well kept and uniform!

I remember being taken to see Jaws when I was far too young for it. I spent most of the film cowering under my jacket with my fingers in my ears.
I was afraid to go to sleep in case a shark came up through the bedclothes.

Humour is what helped. The old joke about "just when you thought it was safe to go to the toilet", the photoshopped picture of the shark in a deep puddle during the floods, the pictures of Octoshark - the shark/octopus cross that can leap out of the sea and gobble up helicopters.

LuluJakey1 · 26/08/2018 12:07

Brain The animal ones don't scare me at all although if I was in the sea with them they might. The ones that terrify me are the ones of deep, bottomless looking , dark water and old wrecks.

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 12:08

sulflower yes true about the ethics. Wow I would love to see a whale shark, beautiful.

I got carried away on the universal studios Jaws ride & was actually scared falling in!

Tanith · 26/08/2018 12:08

I've read the "making of" stuff about Jaws. Apparently, the mechanical shark broke down and sank to the bottom of the sea so often, they had to rely on the theme music for scares: it's why you don't see much of the shark.
Spielburg used to refer to it as "the Great White Turd".

Leesa65 · 26/08/2018 12:09

Sharks fascinate me .

They have those cold, doll like black eyes too .

I do not swim in seas Smile Grin

travellinglighter · 26/08/2018 12:17

I used to teach scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef and my favourite bit of Night Diving was the Bronze Whaler Sharks that gathered at the edge of the light when doing safety stops. Absolutely beautiful creatures. Fear of them is irrational.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 26/08/2018 12:17

From here, no. If I was sitting in that boat....😱

theanonymum1 · 26/08/2018 12:20

The picture doesn't scare me, but I am a bit scared of sharks. I am scared of the sea/big bodies of water though and would never go swimming in either. It's more the unknown and the vastness that scares me than specifically sharks in those situations though.

What I am irrationally scared of is spiders though. To the point where if I type the word spider on my iphone and the emoji pops up, I get a little sick jolty feeling.

dundee12 · 26/08/2018 12:21

This guy does great underwater photography
