A few times I have come across posts taking the piss out of the name Debbie ! I rather like this name and don't think it's 'chavvy' at all. So, is it a chav name ? (Asking for a friend) Grin

What exactly is a chav name ? If you like a name , you like a name ? No !

HolyMountain · 21/08/2018 21:33

I’m a Deborah , it’s good to read the positives about the name but to me it’s phonetically harsh, if that makes sense.

Itchytights · 21/08/2018 21:54

It is a Romany word “ chavvie/ chavvy” meaning child.

daffodillament · 21/08/2018 23:41

Didn't know about the Romany association, that's interesting. I only used it lightheartedly as I always think of a bunch of loutish types hanging around in gangs with names like Chardonnay, Mercedes and Dwayne ! Grin

Mercedes is a fairly solidly traditional Hispanic name...obviously different perceptions in the UK!

Not forgetting Debbie does Dallas ShockGrin

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 22/08/2018 06:40

It’s just dated, my mum is called tracy and literally has like 5 friends called Sharon and another 3/4 called Debbie. It seemed to be the norm. So much so to know who we were talking about you’d have to say thier surname.
3 sets if my nans friends have daughters with the name Sharon and Debbie and 2 sets with Sharon and Tracy.
Its like thier were not many choices back then.

JW1226 · 22/08/2018 07:04

My auntie is called Debbie she's almost 50 , it's abit old fashioned I'm my opinion but you could always bring it back ☺️

WhentheDealGoesDown · 22/08/2018 07:19

Most Debbie's I know are aged 40-60, the name is OK though

Neolara · 22/08/2018 07:27

I'm late 40's. To me, the name Debbie has all the connotation of the name Sharon or Kevin. It's not just a dated name, it's a name that was looked down on and mocked. Is that the definition of chavvy? Hate that word and concept.

Rockbird · 22/08/2018 11:40

Not wanting to bang on about Ms Harry again but she was born in 1945 so it must have been popular during the war.

Rockbird · 22/08/2018 11:40

Forgot I namechanged... Grin

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 22/08/2018 11:44

it is a bit dated tbh.
there were one or two Debbie's at my school (1970s) one of them was Jewish and was never a 'Debbie' but Deborah.
A version I really like is Devorah, but that might sound a bit religious.

daffodillament · 22/08/2018 17:14

NeolaraNot nice ! Grin...Kevin !!? Grin

LuluJakey1 · 22/08/2018 19:19

Devorah sounds like a brand of 1990s luxury confectionary.

Applepudding2018 · 22/08/2018 21:24

I like the name Debbie (Deborah). I always wanted to be a Debbie as I hated my name growing up - but as others have said - Debbie was a popular name for my generation and I'm early 50's.

AlrightBabby · 22/08/2018 21:50

I think you're all forgetting Debbie Dingle, the classy bird from Emmerdale, she's nowhere near 50 (I am and at least 3 Debbies in my class at school)

comeasyouare1 · 22/08/2018 21:56

Not chavvy but possibly a bit dated, although I like Deborah and Debbie but I'm in my 40's. 'Chavvy' names to me have always been Sharon, Tracey, Stacey and derivatives of those.

Tistheseason17 · 22/08/2018 22:06

Emily, Sophie, and Evie will be the Sharon, Tracey, Debbies of the future!
Leave Debbie alone! 🤣🤣🤣
My mate says her mum spelt it Debra just to make it easy to spell phonetically. She loathes, "Debbie" and prefers, "Deb" or literally any other iteration!

daffodillament · 23/08/2018 10:44

Ha ! I don't like the name Debra..reminds me of school. Deb or Debbie is fine albeit a bit dated !

Yoksha · 23/08/2018 11:17

Deborah. Brilliant T Rex track from 1971.

Also, a prophetess from the old testament.

That's what the name brings to my mind.

daffodillament · 23/08/2018 11:39

Yoksha yes !
