A few times I have come across posts taking the piss out of the name Debbie ! I rather like this name and don't think it's 'chavvy' at all. So, is it a chav name ? (Asking for a friend) Grin

Nope but it’s dated and I don’t think it’s due a comeback any time soon. The only Debbie’s I know are middle aged.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/08/2018 22:01

Names which ended up Chav quite often Started off posh, such as Tracy. The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire was born Deborah Mitford

Lalliella · 20/08/2018 22:01

Deborah was a prophet in the bible. She probably wasn’t a chav!

LuluJakey1 · 20/08/2018 22:02

Not chavvy but old-fashioned in a non-cool way, rather like Shirley and Gillian and Pamela.

CocoLoco87 · 20/08/2018 22:02

I can just hear Giovanni saying 'Debbeh'

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/08/2018 22:04

Deborah Mitford might have something to say about that Grin

'Chav' is a horrible term so I tend not to engage with it, to be honest.

Debbie is rather dated and I don't like it much though!

Rebecca36 · 20/08/2018 22:05

Deborah is the name, it is shortened to Debbie or Debs. Deborah is a lovely name but like so many has been adopted by chavvy people (similarly Lorraine, Michelle and others). However there's nothing wrong with Deborah, it's a fine name.

daffodillament · 20/08/2018 22:06

Ha ha lulu ! Old fashioned in a non cool way ..?? Shock

Yes of course, Debbo is somehow very different to Debbie!

I think Debbie is a slightly unfashionable but perfectly serviceable name that would seem original amongst the Islas and Evie’s.

KurriKurri · 20/08/2018 22:11

I grew up in the sixties and seventies and knew a lot of Debbies (and Tracies and Gillians and Pams and Pats and Lesleys and Carols) so I do think of it as a bit dated. But Deborah is a lovely name, it is Biblical and traditional - time for a come back maybe. If you love it, go for it (if you are thinking of using the name) Nowt wrong with it at all.

Singlenotsingle · 20/08/2018 22:12

Deborah is nice.

pilates · 20/08/2018 22:12

Ok for a 70’s/80’s name, but hasn’t stood the test of time well.

LuluJakey1 · 20/08/2018 22:13

Well some old-fashioned things are cool eg The Queen, gin, names like George, Charlotte, Esme. But Debbie, Pamela, Gillian - they are still dull and not cool. A few years ago names like Elsie were out ov favour but it it mkaing. acomeback. No comeback for Pamela or Debbie yet. Smile

flamingofridays · 20/08/2018 22:14

Whoever mentioned dico 2000 yes reminds me of that too!

Your name was deborah, Deborah, it never suited ya....

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 20/08/2018 22:16

Dated... And the first person I thought of with the name was the character from Shameless.

BonnieF · 20/08/2018 22:16

No, not chavvy, but definitely old fashioned.

ChocolateWombat · 20/08/2018 22:16

Go for Deborah not Debbie - Deborah is the 'proper' name and Debbie a 60s abbreviation. If you are called Deborah, which is more classic, you can be Deborah or Debs or Debbo or Debbie or whatever - lots of options.

Where names are an abbreviation, I always think it's best to name a child with the full name and not the abbreviation - the Bbreviations often date whereas the full name doesn't so much, plus an abbreviation can sound rather causal or childish and mig not be so useful in grown up or business life - having the proper, full name just gives more options for the child and whole family. I'd always pick Charles over Charlie or Frederick over Freddie for these kind of reasons - the abbreviations which are popular may well date the child in the way Debbie dates to the 60s and 70s.

shelikesemwithamoustache · 20/08/2018 22:20

I think Deborah is an awesome name for anyone - also like Debbie. Something recognisable but not in the same vein as all the Ellas, Evas, olivias, emilys that you see today. I was born in the 70s so perhaps I’m biased.

BitchQueen90 · 20/08/2018 22:22

I thought of Shameless too. Grin

SuperSuperSuper · 20/08/2018 22:23

Deborah Bone (the girl about whom Disco 2000 was written) was awarded an MBE for services to children's mental health initiatives. She died quite recently, sadly. She was only about 50.

Anyway, back to the name - it's def due a comeback!
