A few times I have come across posts taking the piss out of the name Debbie ! I rather like this name and don't think it's 'chavvy' at all. So, is it a chav name ? (Asking for a friend) Grin

A bit dated, certainly, but not in the least bit 'chav'. I think it's a really pretty name, actually.

WillowKnicks · 20/08/2018 22:33

No it's just 70's

Really? I was born late 60's & there were 3 Deborah/Debbie's in my class Hmm

MikeUniformMike · 20/08/2018 22:33

Deborah is a biblical name, so should be a classic. I would expect a Debbie to be in her mid 50s as it was hugely popular in the 1960s.
It means Bee, which is lovely.
Not 'chav'.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/08/2018 22:33

It's not chivvy, but I don't like it.

Deborah is nice, though.

thegreylady · 20/08/2018 22:38

It’s fine until it becomes Debra!

southnownorth · 20/08/2018 22:41

Dated but not chavvy.

Reminds me of debbie dean from Hollyoaks.

katielouise3 · 20/08/2018 22:44

Not chavvy no, but all the women/females I know called Debbie are 45-50+.

Though in America, I know a famous young one. Though a different spelling... Debby.......

Debby Ryan (Suite Life, Jessie, currently on netflix in 'insatiable.'

Also Debbie Soon (an instagram star) is quite famous, but is from Singapore... (early 20's)

And Debbie Sath - a model who is from Australia. (Mid 30's)

Not really any famous young Debbies in the UK though, that I can think of. (And I don't know one in real life either... Not under 45 anyway.)

katielouise3 · 20/08/2018 22:44

Debby Ryan by the way, is 25.

sansouci · 20/08/2018 23:21

My XH used to mock anyone called Kevin, which was pretty stupid IMO, because he said Kevin is a chavvy / common name.

DollyDayScream · 20/08/2018 23:23

It's dated, but could be anyone (but not an aristocrat(.

Belindabauer · 20/08/2018 23:27

It will probably become fashionable again in about 20 yeats time, just like names such as Albert and Archie are fashionable now. When I was you g such names were considered awful.

Itchytights · 20/08/2018 23:31

Pleaaaaaaaase stop saying ‘chav’

Highly offensive and imo you don’t even know what the actual word means.

Deborah is fine but for some reason imo Debbie sounds dated.

And I have a close relative called Deborah.

C0untDucku1a · 20/08/2018 23:31

I have a debbie friend. 39. And no she isn't deborah officially. Just debbie.

Deborah is an awesome prophet.

LuluJakey1 · 21/08/2018 00:04

I know a Debbie and she is 48 and does ballroom dancing at weekends in competitions.

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 21/08/2018 00:09

I know a lovely very intelligent girl called Debby.

moredoll · 21/08/2018 03:38

T. Rex or possibly Tyrannosaurus Rex for 'Deborah' on YouTube. Brilliant.

As a name I think it's lovely. Prefer Deborah nn Debbie, but I'm like that with all names. Debbie is fine on its own. And not at all chavvy.

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 21/08/2018 04:44

Debbie is Karen and Jackie’s sister. They are 43/48.
Not “chavvy”.

JackietheBackie · 21/08/2018 05:45

Daffodillament - I am indeed a 70’s girl (but Jackie isn’t my real name).

Wasn’t there a comic called Debbie? I seem to remember it from my youth......

Shockers · 21/08/2018 05:52

My closest school friend (still my closest friend over 40 years later) is called Deborah (Debby for short).

Her house was very small, with woodchip on the walls... and all the boys loved her Grin.

Ihuntmonsters · 21/08/2018 06:06

This shows name popularity in the US with a huge peak in the early 60s, I found this fun UK tool shows Deborah peaked in about 1965, again coming out of nowhere and disappearing again.

Looks like we'll be getting Patricia, Ann and Janet a while before Deborah, Jacqueline and Karen make a comeback. Maybe another 10-20 years yet I think.

OrdinaryGirl · 21/08/2018 06:32

Deborah in the Bible was a total badass!
Love the name. Not keen on Debbie as a nickname though.

shallen · 21/08/2018 07:55

@Neshoma I'm called sharron..... bloody Shazza and trace has haunted me my entire life!!

daffodillament · 21/08/2018 09:57

Wow ! Some great replies. Debbie from Shameless Grin Brilliant ! Thankyou to whoever said the name was pretty. Blush I love that !

@Itchytights what does the word chav mean?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 21/08/2018 21:24

Chav is a derogatory term for a certain section of working class people, typically characterised as workshy / feckless / benefit scroungers with poor taste and few manners. One backronym is Council Housed And Violent.

It's a broad equivalent to an Australian bogan or an American redneck.
