Coffee drinking

Hi All.
I'd like your opinions on coffee drinking - I've never come across this snobbery before but today I was ripped apart by a fellow teacher in the staffroom.
As I poured my milk into my mug straight after the instant coffee , which I do because I don't like it tasting burnt, a colleague almost ran across the staffroom shouting"Urgh how disgusting putting milk in before the water, thats revolting . Were you dragged up or brought up"
I was mortified but carried on smiling and took my coffee back to my room feeling as if I should crawl back under the rock I came out from!!!
Have I missed something in 46 years of life that makes this a complete no-no unless you come from the dregs of society?

I always that that etiquette was largely about good manners, ie. treating people naicely and putting them at ease. It's your colleague who's been 'dragged up' tho that suggests (unfairly) some fault in her upbringing. No idea about whether instant coffee granules are 'burnt' by boiling water but isn't it down to personal taste?

PasstheStarmix · 18/12/2017 20:44

I'd like to work in some of the pp's jobs making proper coffee at work, do they shirk
instant hot choc too and drink real cocoa at work as well? Must be nice to have that kind of time and getting paid for it!! Hmm

I actually like instant.. especially those little packets that come pre made... Mhmm like pre made cappuccinos - There Nice

topcat2014 · 18/12/2017 20:47

I like a mug of coffee on the hour every hour whilst awake.

If I drank anything other than instant I would keel over.

Anyway, I use the teaspoon in the mug as a guide to how much milk to put in !

PasstheStarmix · 18/12/2017 20:50

Me too I think the instant cappucinos are really nice in the sachets, maxwell house do a lovely cappucino as well, very fattening but a tasty treat. I'm all about saving faffing about!

I'd rather have the tea

PasstheStarmix · 18/12/2017 20:55

Decent beans are costly or so
I've heard also and you're at risk of a bitter cup Shock

CurryWorst · 18/12/2017 20:56

obviously those of you who think it's hilarious to be commenting on etiquette of INSTANT coffee have never been in a job with 10 mins at most to grab something between 8 and 1:00., obviously the SAHM's!!

Based on the OP I was going to say your colleague is a dick and you should ignore, but now I think that you deserve anything you get.
Hmm

PasstheStarmix · 18/12/2017 20:58

Yeah you can't stereotype SAHM's. Some people just like to faff about at work or at home.

PasstheStarmix · 18/12/2017 21:01

Forgot to mention I had a colleague that used to prep a full homemade Caesar salad in the staff room tossing it and everything, squeezing fresh lemon, herbs, the lot. What work she did I don't know...no wonder the woman was always flustered!!

Instant coffee is a very useful thing to have around.

But it doesn't have "etiquette". It's not the kind of thing around which a mythology of the "correct" way to do things exists.

For that mythology to exist the drink in question needs to have existed for a longer time, and needs to have at some point been the preserve of the upper classes, such that they could develop rituals to distinguish "people who know the rules" from "people who do not know the rules".

(note that etiquette is not the same as manners, it is not politeness)

fizzicles · 19/12/2017 14:23

I have one cup of coffee in the morning before the kids get into school. Always proper coffee, takes 30 seconds to find a mug, put the coffee and filter paper in place, then pour the water in from the urn. Takes a few minutes to drip through, but I can go and check my pigeon hole or do another little job while that’s happening. I’m no less stressed/busy than any other teacher, I just really like a proper cup of coffee in the morning.

LesDennishair · 19/12/2017 14:33

This isn’t real is it?
Oh the irony coming from Crumbs1 Grin

As regards instant coffee etiquette, there isn’t a ‘correct ‘ way. Amusing someone thinks there is.
Our coffee machine seems to do the water first for ground coffee (though I’m not a big coffee drinker, the machine is my husband’s)

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 19/12/2017 14:40

I'm a teacher. Instant coffee is grim.
This is what you need! It's brilliant.

Coffee drinking
PasstheStarmix · 19/12/2017 15:04

Some people like instant I'm not a big coffee drinker and find authentic coffee too strong.

PasstheStarmix · 19/12/2017 15:08

I can understand not liking instant if you like 'real' coffee though. It's the same with real cocoa and instant hot choc. Each to their own I say..

FatherChewieLouie · 19/12/2017 15:09

Thanks folks - obviously those of you who think it's hilarious to be commenting on etiquette of INSTANT coffee have never been in a job with 10 mins at most to grab something between 8 and 1:00., obviously the SAHM's!!

Hmm
MyKingdomForBrie · 19/12/2017 15:15

I don’t drink coffee at all and I’m a SAHM - shoot me now..

I was a lawyer though and had plenty of time to fanny about making multiple hot drinks, much more than I do now!

Got to love people’s inner judgmental twat showing over hot drink choices..

PasstheStarmix · 19/12/2017 15:42

Hot drinks always make people alittle crazy. I had a right jumped up Starbucks coffee assistant the other day or a 'barista.' Talk about jumped up...

PasstheStarmix · 19/12/2017 15:43

drinks rather *

LesDennishair · 19/12/2017 16:12

Was that OP made the SAHM comment? Dear oh dear.

What did the barista do, passthestarmix?

PasstheStarmix · 19/12/2017 16:24

He called the man in front of me in the queue fat in questioning his full fat drinks choice and was genuinely rude and arrogant to everybody. He went on to serve me a different drink to what I ordered (fair enough mistakes happen) but then went on to tell me I'd ordered it when I hadn't and the woman behind me heard me clearly ask for what I ordered correctly (very condescending barrister.) I think he thought he was the owner of the whole company!
